Taking the Guesswork out of Navigating Tropical Cyclones

StormGeo's shipping division (formerly AWT), a provider of fleet optimization services, fleet performance and onboard voyage management software, has introduced a new multi-model technology enabling ship captains to make better routing decisions around tropical cyclones. StormGeo's Tropical Cyclone track uses multi-model ensembles and advanced analysis to narrow the "cone of uncertainty," the area extending out from a storm on a forecasting map that projects a cyclone's path. In order to improve decision-making for crew and cargo safety, the new Tropical Cyclone Multi-Model (TCMM) track technology is included in the latest versions of the onboard BVS and Routing Advisory Service.

KVH to Transmit AWT Weather Data

KVH says it plans to offer affordable delivery of AWT’s global weather data to subscribing vessels over the mini-VSAT Broadband network. KVH Industries explains that it has become the WEATHERlink launch partner for KVH’s IP-MobileCast content delivery service. KVH will use IP-MobileCast multicasting technology, to deliver AWT’s high-resolution weather and ocean data to ships at sea for a low fixed monthly fee. AWT is a marine industry leader in weather forecasting and ship routing. The AWT data, which includes forecasts with wind, wave, visibility, and currents with tidal stream data, will be updated up to four times per day to help ships optimize voyage planning and safety.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement Signed

"Non-Toxic Methods for Corrosion Resistance and Biofouling Prevention," in order to continue work on the development of non-chromate coatings. For several years, a NUWCDIVNPT/URI team has been researching the development of a non-toxic, anti-fouling coating for application below the waterline on U.S. Navy surface ships, submarines, and support equipment. The effort was initiated after DoD mandated the elimination of hexavalent chromium in corrosion conversion coatings.
