NY Waterway Christens New Ferry

Gloria Bennis, wife of the late Coast Guard Admiral Richard E. Bennis, USCG Captain Craig Bone and NY Waterway President Arthur E. Imperatore, Jr., christen The Admiral Richard E. Bennis, NY Waterway’s newest high-speed ferry, tomorrow at the Coast Guard Building next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. After the traditional champagne christening, Mrs. Bennis will take the helm of the new ferry for a 10-minute cruise past the Statue of Liberty, returning to the American Park Restaurant for a short speaking program and lunch. Admiral Bennis, the former Coast Guard Captain of the Port of New York/New Jersey, directed the largest waterborne evacuation in history on September 11, 2001. The ferry also pays tribute to all the men and women of the Coast Guard.

Rear Admiral Bennis Will Lead Maritime and Land Security at TSA

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta named Rear Admiral Richard E. Bennis, USCG, (ret.) as the Associate Under Secretary of Transportation for Maritime and Land Security at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Admiral Bennis, who led Coast Guard response in New York to the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, will direct TSA exercise of security responsibilities for the nation’s seaports and land transportation assets. TRW Selected to Perform Port Vulnerability Assessments

The U.S. Department of Transportation has selected TRW Inc. to assess the vulnerability of the nation's most critical commercial and military seaports, under a 5-year contract worth up to $31 million. "Securing our nation's ports and maritime transportation system is a vital component of our overarching transportation security mission," said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta in announcing TRW's selection. Under contract to the Coast Guard, TRW will develop model port security guidelines, conduct assessments of at least 55 U.S. ports, and develop a port vulnerability self-assessment methodology to help local port stakeholders evaluate and improve security conditions.

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mineta To Announce Grants

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta will announce $92.3 million in grants to 77 seaports to enhance the security of the maritime transportation system. The Secretary will be joined in making the announcement today by Congressman Bill Young (FL), U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Admiral Thomas H. Collins, U.S. Maritime Administrator William Schubert, Rear Admiral Richard E. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and Joseph J. Seymour, Executive Director, and Charles A. Authority of New York and New Jersey. The announcement will take place at 2:00, p.m., at Battery Park in New York. Congress provided funding for the grant program to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for security in all modes of transportation.

Annual Silver Bell Awards Held in NY

The Seamen’s Church Institute of New York and New Jersey held the 25th Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner on June 11 at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. It drew a record crowd of more than 900 people and raised over $600,000 for the Institute. "We are thankful for the support of the maritime industry and our friends," said the Rev. Canon Peter Larom, SCI's Executive Director. Richard T. du Moulin, President of Intrepid Shipping and Silver Bell Dinner Chairman since 1996, reported that 15 new companies joined SCI's loyal supporters. "The Institute's service to seafarers and port communities is unequaled among freestanding maritime agencies," said Mr. du Moulin.

McGuire Award Goes to 9/11 Heroes

Four people symbolic of those in the frontline of the massive waterfront rescue and evacuation operation, which followed the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York on 11 September 2001, are the recipients of the James E. McGuire Safety Award. International Registries, Inc. presented the awards at a dinner in Reston, Virginia, near Washington D.C. on 15 October 2002.
