Werner Named Academic Dean of Webb Institute

Webb Institute announced that Matthew R. Werner has been named Webb Institute’s next Academic Dean. Professor Werner, the American Bureau of Shipping Chair of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, will begin his term on July 1, 2015. Professor Werner is an accomplished educator with extensive leadership and administrative experience. Professor Werner began his career in the ship design, construction, and operations fields and joined the Webb faculty in 2002. In 2010, he was designated Webb’s first American Bureau of Shipping Chair in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Keith Michel Installed as President of Webb Institute

Retired Chairman of the Board of the Herbert Engineering Group of Companies and Webb Institute alumnus, R. Keith Michel (Webb ’73) was inaugurated as the 15th president of Webb Institutein a private ceremony set on campus. Mr. Michel's inuauguration followed the retirement of RADM Robert C. Olsen, Jr. USCG (Ret.), who filled the role for eight years. “Keith is highly regarded throughout the marine industry and will be an asset to Webb Institute,” said outgoing President Olsen. Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. George Campbell Jr., conducted the presidential inauguration.

Webb Institute, ABS Support Maritime Scholars

Webb Institute awards second ABS scholarship for 2012 for studies in naval architecture and marine engineering. Webb Institute, a four-year college specializing in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, has recognized the second ABS Scholar for 2012. The ABS Scholarship Program provides financial support to deserving engineering and naval architecture students based on GPA, class rank, leadership ability, faculty recommendations and service to Webb Institute. Dean Richard P. Neilson announced the $50,000 scholarship on November 10, 2012, to Samantha Griswold ‘14, at the Fall Board of Trustees meeting hosted on the campus of Webb Institute in Glen Cove.

Neilson Appointed Academic Dean at Webb

Webb Institute announced the appointment of Mr. Richard P. Neilson as its next Academic Dean. Neilson will assume responsibility for the academic program on July 1 of this year, succeeding Dr. Roger H. Compton, Dean since 1998. Mr. Neilson, a 1970 graduate of Webb, returns to his alma mater after a long and distinguished career in the marine industry. Immediately after graduation he worked for the United States Coast Guard in Washington, D.C., in the Design Branch of their Naval Engineering Division. From 1974 to 1979 he was with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company and then with Sun Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a naval architect in the Tanker Product Group and as Supervisor of Structural Engineering.
