Fincantieri Scoops $1.27B Deal to Supply Two Patrol Vessels to Indonesia

Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defense have signed a contract for the supply of two Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel (PPA) units.The $1.27 billion (€1.18 billion) deal is part of the framework of collaborative relations initiated by the Italian Ministry of Defense.A PPA is a highly flexible ship with an outstanding technological standard. Fincantieri Delivers Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship to Italian Navy

Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano on Friday delivered Paolo Thaon di Revel, the first of seven new Multipurpose Offshore Patrol ships (PPA – Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura) for the Italian Navy.The 143-meter-long PPAs are built at the Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries expected until 2026. Fincantieri Launches Emilio Bianchi

Italian Shipbuilding Company Fincantieri has officially launched the "Emilio Bianchi" frigate, the tenth and last FREMM (Multi Mission European Frigates) vessel at the integrated shipyard of Riva Trigoso (Genoa).The ship has been launched with the combat system and platform equipment already installed onboard and fully integrated. Paolo Thaon di Revel Launched

Italy launched 'Paolo Thaon di Revel', the first unit in a new class of multipurpose offshore patrol ships (abbreviated to PPA in Italian).The launching ceremony of the PPA took place yesterday (July 15) at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia), in the presence of the Italian Minister of Defence Elisabetta Trenta.Godmother of the ceremony was Mrs. Irene Imperiali, nephew of the Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel. New Profile for The Shipbuilding Sector in Liguria

Oceanographic Icebreaker Kronprins Haakon Delivered

A new icebreaking research vessel built for the Norwegian governmental body for oceanographic research and fishing, was delivered this week in Norway. After the building process was completed at Fincantieri’s Integrated shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano in Italy, the new vessel, named Kronprins Haakon, sailed to the Vard Langsten shipyard in Norway for final tests and preparation for delivery to the Institute of Marine Research (IMR). The 9,000-gross-ton icebreaker is more than 100 meters long, 21 wide and can reach speeds up to 15 knots. She is able to move independently through ice up to one meter thick. She is built to ensure minimum environmental impact and reduced underwater noise, so as to allow studies on fish and marine mammals.

A steel cutting ceremony for Italy’s next Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Ship (PPA) took place at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso (Genova), officially marking the beginning of construction works on the second unit. The unit will be delivered in 2022 and it is part of the renewal plan of the surface operational lines of the Italian Navy vessels, approved by the Government and Parliament and started in May 2015. 25th Anniversary of the Destriero’s Record Atlantic Crossing

On August 9, 1992 – 25 years ago today – the motor yacht Destriero set the record for the fastest Atlantic crossing, a record that remains unbeaten to this day. The monohull, built in 1991 in less than one year in the Fincantieri shipyard of Muggiano and Riva Trigoso, sailed 3,106 nautical miles without refueling, from Ambrose Light, N.Y. to Bishop Rock lightship on the Scilly Isles, England, in 58 hours at an average speed of 53 knots (reaching a maximum speed of 66 knots), claiming once more the Blue Riband, awarded in 1933 to the legendary transatlantic liner Rex. The yacht also set a record on its return journey, awarded the Virgin Atlantic Trophy by the English business magnate Richard Branson on September 5, 1992, as well as the New York Yacht Club Columbus Atlantic Trophy.

GE Gas Turbine to Power Italian Navy Patrol Ship

GE’s Marine Solutions announced it will provide a LM2500+G4 gas turbine that will power the Italian Navy’s new Pattugliatori Polivalenti d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol ship. The PPA’s hybrid electric propulsion system also will use GE’s shock-proof MV3000 drives and a GE-designed electrical network of motors as part of the propulsion system. Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business headquartered in Italy, will have the design responsibility for the gas turbine package. The PPA ship will be built by Fincantieri at its Integrated Shipyard of Riva Trigoso and Muggiano.

Abandoned Cruise Ship Sinks off Thailand

Chinese cruise ship "Ocean Dream" , anchored off Laem Chanang port in Sri Racha for over a year, sank into the sea today, raising fear by Thai environmental authorities that it could cause pollution in the sea. Ocean Dream capsized on Saturday while anchored around 2 miles off Laem Chabang port located in Sri Racha on Thailand’s east coast. Local news reports the vessel had been abandoned by the owners for over a year. Local fisherman saw the vessel was taking on water, the authorities at Marine Department’s Marine Safety Centre were then contacted. Authorities immediately coordinated with the Chinese owner to stabilise the vessel back to its position, and were working out a plan to have it fixed soon.

Italian Navy Renewal Program Begins

The steel cutting ceremony of the LSS logistic support unit’s bow section was held today at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia. Construction works, therefore, officially started on the first unit, as provided in the renewal plan of the Italian Navy’s fleet, which has been commissioned to Fincantieri. The section is 94 meters long, 24 meters wide, 16.3 meters high, weighing about 4,100 tons. In the coming months it will be launched and transported by sea to the shipyard in Muggiano (La Spezia)…

Sixth FREMM Frigate Launched

Today the launching ceremony of the frigate Luigi Rizzo took place at the plant in Riva Trigoso (Genova). The sixth of a series of 10 units FREMM - European Multi-Mission Frigates, was commissioned from Fincantieri by the Navy Italian in the framework of international cooperation between Italy and France, with the coordination of OCCAR, the joint organization for European cooperation in armaments. Godmother to the ship was Wilhelmina Maria Rizzo, daughter of Luigi Rizzo, two gold medals for bravery. The ceremony was attended, among others, Giovanni Toti, President of the Liguria Region, the Vice Admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, Chief of Staff of the Navy, and am the CEO of Fincantieri, Giuseppe Bono.

Fincantieri Launches Nuclear Waste Vessel for Russia

Itarus, the new semisubmersible floating platform built to transport Russia’s nuclear materials, was launched at a ceremony on November 19 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Muggiano, La Spezia. Built by Fincantieri for the Russian RosRAO, the Federal State Unitary Enterprise for radioactive waste management, the vessel will be used for the transportation of nuclear submarine reactor compartments decommissioned by the Russian Navy from the storage area of Sayda Bay to the Nerpa Shipyard (and vice-versa), facing the Kola Peninsula in the Barents Sea.
