Salvage Operations for Barges to Begin Next Week
Salvage operations to recover two barges stranded in the Ohio River won’t begin before Monday, when high water recedes, the U.S. Coast Guard said, according to the Courier Journal. River Salvage Co. of Crescent, Pa., has been hired to secure the two barges that broke loose early Tuesday when cabling or a coupling snapped just after the tow had cleared McAlpine Locks. Two runaway barges were secured, but one remains partly submerged on the Indiana shore midway between the Sherman Minton and K & I bridges, and another is partly underwater and lodged at the McAlpine Dam. Both are out of the commercial channel and aren’t impeding river traffic. One of the stranded barge’s cargo of salt spilled in the river, while the other barge lost about 1,450 tons of liquid fertilizer.
Barge Partially Sinks
The AP has reported that a barge hauling 800,000 gallons of liquid asphalt that strayed from its tow has partially sunk to the river bottom, according to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard said the barge doesn't seem in danger of breaking. The river current has pushed the 80-foot barge sideways against a railroad bridge near downtown Louisville. Nauert said the barge is believed to be stable. The barge was one of three that got away from their tow Thursday when a connecting cable broke or separated. Two of the barges were caught, but the third went over the McAlpine Dam spillway and eventually wedged against the bridge. Officials can't tell how much has leaked from the barge, but Nauert said there was no evidence of significant leaking. Barge owner Magnolia Marine Transportation Co.
62 Barges Break Free on Ohio River
More than five dozen barges have reportedly broken free due to ice and high water at two separate locations on the Ohio River. So far 59 of the 62 breakaway barges have been recovered, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, who said it is working alongside the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and industry partners in response to the incidents near Pittsburgh, Pa., and Moundsville, W.Va. By Monday, 34 of the reported 35 breakaway barges from fleeting areas at mile maker 94 near Moundsville have been recovered and secured, while 25 of the 27 breakaway barges from Jack’s Run Fleeting area at mile marker 4 near Pittsburgh have been accounted for, and security video has shown seven of the barges went over Emsworth Lock & Dam.
Donjon Assists in USS America Tow Out
Donjon Marine Co., Inc., a provider if multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, ocean and inland towing, emergency response, and dredging, provided towing and logistical support thru its U.S. Navy Salvage and Related services contract, in the towing out to sea of the Navy’s USS America, the third Kitty Hawk-class attack aircraft carrier on April 19. The Navy will conduct tests on the carrier, commissioned in 1965, for a number of weeks and then the ship will be sunk. Donjon coordinated the movement of the USS America from its lay berth located in the Philadelphia Naval Yard, thru the Delaware River to the open ocean where the vessel was towed by Donjon’s 7000-Horse Power Atlantic Salvor and 8000-Horse Power Powhatan to the Project site.
DONJON Contracted to Salvage Tugboat Pair
Donjon Marine Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging and related emergency response services, was contracted under a Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA) by the U.S. Coast Guard to provide emergency salvage services for two tugboats that sank on July 28, 2008 at a pier adjacent to the Schuylkill River near the Girard Point Bridge outside Philadelphia, PA. At the time of the sinking of the Scooby Doo and Big Boy, reportedly more than 2,000 gallons of petroleum based contaminants were released into the water. Divers have reduced the out flow from the tugs but due to the condition of the vessels, the flow cannot be stopped until the vessels are salvaged.

Bisso Marine Salvages Buried Crane
Bisso Marine recently mobilized a salvage team, the salvage support barge C/B BIG EAGLE and the 700 ton capacity D/B Cappy Bisso to salvage a crawler crane which had fallen into the Atchafalaya River in Berwick, La. The crane, which weighed approximately 100 tons, was knocked into the river upon contact with the HWY 90 Bridge in 2005. At the salvage location the water was 30 ft. deep, but in the two years since the collision, the crane had settled to approximately 25 feet below the river bottom.
TITAN to Handle Decommissioned Monongahela
TITAN Salvage has been retained to handle salvage of the Monongahela, a decommissioned tanker ship that broke loose from its moorings on the night of Nov. 12. The tanker ship, which is part of the James River Reserve Fleet (JRRF), was affected by a severe storm and unusually high water surges in the James River and nearby vicinity when it was wind driven aground on soft soil, approximately one-half mile downstream of the JRRF near the western bank of the river. TITAN has completed hydrographic surveys for use in the finite salvage calculations required for a salvage plan.
Bisso Salvages Mackerel
Bisso Marine salvage crews raised M/V Mackerel from the Mississippi River. The vessel capsized and sank as it was entering the river from the Algiers Lock. A severe weather front precluded any safe operation from commencing, immediately. The salvage vessels - derrick Ajax and tugboats Tyler and Beau Bisso - stood by, waiting for weather conditions to improve. The actual salvage operation took eight hours to complete.
Inland Salvage Completes Salvage of Sunken Barge
Inland Salvage Inc. Completes Lightering and Salvage Operations of Sunken Hopper Barge. Inland Salvage Inc.recently completed the removal of approximately 1000 tons of structural scrap steel from a sunken hopper barge and subsequent salvage of the barge which had been obstructing a loading dock on the Mississippi River near LaPlace, LA. Immediately upon being notified by the dock's owner that Inland Salvage Inc. (ISI) had been appointed as the salvor, ISI responded to the sinking of the 195' hopper barge laden with 1,000 tons of scrap metal when the barge sank.
Salvors Complete Scheldt Double Salvage Op
Salvage and towage company Multraship, working with Antwerp-based URS Salvage & Maritime Contracting, has completed two salvage operations in the River Scheldt over a period of fewer than 24 hours. The 12,600 dwt Egyptian multipurpose vessel Aburdees, loaded with general cargo, containers and cars enroute from Bremen to Antwerp, suffered an engine black-out at 1630hrs on December 6. It tried to drop anchor but began drifting in the Oostgat, near Vlissingen, and eventually started to ground in low water. Multraship and co-contractor URS, working under an LOF agreement, deployed the tugs Multrasalvor and Schouwenbank, but were unable to arrest the grounding.

Inland Salvage Battles to Salvage Coal Barge
Inland Salvage Inc. Salvage Team members recently fought with high current Mississippi River conditions to refloat a sunken coal barge near Lake Providence, LA. The barge was fully loaded and headed south when it went down in March of this year. Having been on the river bottom this long, the barge was partially buried in river sediment. The salvage crew began the task of digging the wreck clear. Methods involving clam buckets proved unsuccessful as the river current would cause the equipment to become fouled and uncontrollable. Salvagers Recover Two Bodies from Burning Tanker Sanchi
A Chinese salvage team recovered two bodies on Saturday from a stricken Iranian oil tanker, that was still blazing a week after it caught fire and was left adrift following a collision in the East China Sea, state news agency Xinhua reported. The four members of the salvage team wore respirators to board the “Sanchi”, where they found the two bodies on the deck. They tried to get to the living quarters but were driven back by temperatures on the burning ship of around 89 Celsius (192 Fahrenheit), Xinhua said.
Japanese Ship Recycling Facility Earns ClassNK Certification
Classification society ClassNK issued the first Statement of Compliance for a ship recycling facility in Japan to Miyaji Salvage Co. Ltd.. certifying that the facility and its recycling procedures are fully in compliance with the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009 (Hong Kong Convention). This marks the first time that a ship recycling yard in Japan has achieved certification in line with the convention. Miyaji Salvage Co. Ltd. was established in Tadotsu, Nakatado District, Kagawa Prefecture in 1976. Among the recycling facilities at Miyaji Salvage include a 25,000m2 ship recycling yard, a 450m wharf, and a 250t crane vessel, which are used in the dismantling and recycling of coastwise vessels and harbor loading facilities.
Navy Taps Donjon for Salvage Services
Donjon Marine Co., Inc. has been awarded a $41 million-dollar, ceiling-priced, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, cost-plus-award-fee contract for marine salvage, salvage-related towing, harbor clearance, ocean engineering and point-to-point towing services to support the U.S. Navy’s Director of Ocean Engineering, Supervisor of Salvage and Diving. In addition to the salvage component of this services agreement, Donjon was also awarded a contract to supply the U.S. Navy with Engineering Support Services on a worldwide basis. ASA Member Refloats Tanker on Mississippi
On June 13, a member of the American Salvage Association (ASA) responded to grounded vessel in the Mississippi River just above Cubit’s Gap, about 10 miles below Venice, Louisiana. Traffic on the Mississippi was not impeded by the grounded vessel. The ASA member was placed on standby pending the results of aninitial effort to refloat the vessel with tugs. Within a few hours of the vessel owner’s activation of its Vessel Response Plan (VRP) on June 14 in accordance with the new US Coast Guard Salvage and Marine Firefighting Regulations, the ASA member began efforts to conduct an on board survey, prepare a damaged stability assessment, and develop a salvage plan to refloat the vessel.
Multraship Completes Lifting of Sunken Tug
Dutch salvage and towage company Multraship Salvage BV has successfully refloated the Slovakian pusher-tug Polana, which sank in the River Danube on December 19 last year following a serious fire in it engineroom. Despite a rapid response from local firefighters at the time of the casualty, the fire spread into the Polana's accommodation and other parts of the ship. The vessel subsequently sank in 10-12 m.of water in the Romanian section of the river, off Giurgiu. The Romanian authorities ordered the owners to the remove the vessel immediately because the Polana had over forty tons of fuel on board. ASA Presents “Rapid Response” Award
The American Salvage Association (ASA) awarded its first Rapid Response Award on April 29 to the United States Coast Guard Marine Safety Office (MSO) New Orleans for its role in the salvage of the M/V Lee III, a supply boat that collided with a container ship and sank near the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River on February 21. Five crewmembers were lost in the incident. ASA member Bisso Marine commenced operations to remove the vessel. MSO New Orleans immediately established an open dialogue with the salvor, clearly stated all expectations and offered its full support. As the salvage operation progressed, the need to restore commerce was balanced with operational safety, recovery of the vessel’s crew-members and the protection of the environment.
Imabari to Acquire Minaminippon Shipbuilding
Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has reached an initial agreement to acquire compatriot Japanese shipbuilder Minaminippon Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. The takeover, which remains subject to further discussions before the deal is concluded, would take effect April 1, 2018. Minaminippon’s present shareholders include Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (25 percent) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (24 percent).
Sunken Barge Salvage Stops Traffic on Chicago River
The U.S. Coast Guard said it is restricting vessel traffic on the Chicago River to allow for salvage of a sunken barge. All cargo has been removed from the sunken barge in the Chicago River between the Lake and Randolph Street bridges and divers are currently in the water to conduct a survey of the barge's hull. The barge has been secured so that a 50-foot clearance can allow for vessel traffic to transit. Once the divers complete their survey, the company intends to formulate a salvage plan to either move the barge to another location or lift it out of the water. Coast Guard assets are on scene to monitor vessel traffic while divers are in the water.
NTSB Issues Report on 2016 Columbia River Bulker Grounding
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a report on its investigation into the November 2016 grounding of the bulk carrier Nenita in the Columbia River. The Marshall Islands-flagged vessel was fully laden when it suffered an engine failure that impacted its ability to maneuver and subsequently ran aground at Three Tree Point on the Washington State side of the river. The ship’s bulbous bow and hull were damaged, but no injuries or pollution were reported. The vessel was towed to Longview, Wash.
Scheldt Salvage a Success
Multraship Salvage, working under LOF2000 with co-contractors URS Salvage and Maritime Contracting, has moved the containership Fowairet to the Verbrugge Terminal at the port of Flushing after the 2,757 teu vessel grounded in the River Scheldt last week with a cargo of almost 2,000 containers, 127 of which contained hazardous cargo. The vessel suffered hogging damage and flooding in No. 5 hold after grounding in the early morning of September 20 on the ebb tide near Perkpolder, between Terneuzen and Antwerp. There was some oil leakage from a cracked fuel tank which was contained by anti-pollution craft with sweepers. The vessel was initially held in Flushing Sloe harbor, awaiting inspection and assessment of salvage options.
