DNV GL: Enhancing Fire Safety on Ro-Ro Decks
DNV GL has issued a report on fire incidents in Ro-Ro spaces to address growing safety concerns in this segment and provide guidance to shipowners. DNV GL’s “Fires on Ro-Ro decks” has examined fires within Ro-Ro spaces on Ro-Pax vessels, vehicle carriers and general Ro-Ro cargo vessels and has identified 35 such fires between 2005 and 2016. Finnlines Continues to Add Capacity

RoRo into Turku with Grounding Damage
The 13,145 grt Finnish owned ro-ro Global Freighter has drydocked for grounding damage inspection at Finland’s Turku Repair Yard in Naantali. The ro-ro grounded near Nauvo in the Turku Archipelago while on a charter to Sea Wind Line for a voyage between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden. The 1977-built vessel has been seriously holed below the waterline. It is not known yet weather permanent repairs will take place in Naantali or that the vessel will be towed to a cheaper repair location. The ro-ro is owned by Lillbaka Oy.
Actera, Esas Buying UN Ro-Ro from KKR
Turkish investment firms Actera Group and Esas Holding have signed an agreement to acquire ferry operator UN Ro-Ro from private equity firm KKR & Co LP, the Turkish companies said in a statement on Tuesday. UN Ro-Ro, KKR's sole investment in Turkey, is among the largest such ferry operators in the Mediterranean basin, the statement said. Actera and Esas did not disclose any financial details of the deal. KKR bought 97.6 percent of UN Ro-Ro for 910 million euros ($1.22 billion) in 2007. Reporting by Ece Toksabay
Le Havre: Expansion of Ro-Ro Terminal
10% more traffic and new yard surface available. 2011 looks promising for the ro-ro terminal! At the end of August 2011, 245,600 vehicles had been handled on the terminal, an increase of 10% for the same period in the previous year. 10 additional hectares have been commissioned. The action taken by the GPMH together with the stakeholders in the ro-ro terminal is bearing fruit: ro-ro traffic in the Port of Le Havre has seen strong growth for the past two years. For the record, in August 2010, 223,240 new and second-hand vehicles were routed through the terminal, compared with 137,700 over the same period in 2009. Encouraging figures that confirm the need to expand the compound made available to ro-ro operators.
Interferry Welcomes EEDI Decision
Trade association Interferry has welcomed the decision at last week’s session of the IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) to proceed with a sector-specific methodology for establishing energy efficiency requirements for ro-ro cargo and ro-pax vessels. The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements for most other ship types – due in force from 2013 – had been agreed during a previous session, when an extended timeline was approved for ro-ro ferries due to the extensive variation of ships within this segment.
Grimaldi Orders Integrated Bridge Systems from Northrop Grumman
Northrop Grumman Corporation has received orders to supply integrated bridge systems for five new roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vehicle carriers being built for Grimaldi Group Naples by Croatian Shipbuilding Corporation at its Uljanik shipyard in Pula, Croatia. The ships will be fitted with a complete suite of navigation and communication systems to be supplied by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine business unit in conjunction with Compania Generale Telemar. The navigation systems to be installed on the five new ro-ro ships will be based on Sperry Marine’s new-generation VisionMaster FT technology, which was unveiled at the 2006 SMM Exhibition in Hamburg.
Turkish Truckers Eye Caspian Sea Routes to Avoid Delays in Iran
Turkish carriers plan to cross near 25 thousand vehicles a year over Caspian Sea with ferryboats and Ro Ro ships to avoid delays on the route across Iran. The use of ferry boats and Ro-Ro ships would cut excursion time significantly, the CEO of Turkey’s International Transporters Association (UND) Fatih Şener quoted as saying in report published in Hurriyet Daily News. There are plans to carry nearly 25 thousand trucks a year over the Caspian Sea using ferryboats and Ro-Ro ships from the newly constructed Alat port in Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan’s Türkmenbaşı port.
Grimaldi Group Orders Five RoRo's for $430m
The Grimaldi Group ordered five Ro-Ro Multipurpose Car Carriers for its Atlantic Services. The order was placed with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard of Ulsan, South Korea, and its value is at around $430 million. The first ship is scheduled to enter service in spring 2010, with the others following at a few months interval one from each other, between 2010 and 2011. They are almost identical sisters of another 5 ships contracted with Uljanik Yard of Croatia, which are slated for delivery in 2008 and 2009. In line with the Grimaldi Group strategy, these new ships will be highly flexible in terms of cargo mix. At 25,000-dwt and with a service speed of 21 knots, each of the new vessels will be able to take on board up to 2,000 linear metres of Ro/Ro cargo, 2,000 cars and up to 800 TEU of containers.
Matson to Convert Containership
Matson Navigation Company, Inc. (Matson) has begun the first conversion of one of its C-9 containerships, MV Mokihana, to a combination roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) and container vessel to further strengthen its Hawaii service capabilities. With the conversion, the vessel will have ro-ro and container capacity comparable to two vessels in Matson's service today, the dedicated ro-ro vessel Great Land and the containership S.S. Lihue. The new garage will have the capacity to carry 1,350 vehicles. The plan is part of a multi-phase program that began in 2003 and is designed to provide Matson's auto customers with the two service features they prefer: frequency of service and ro-ro capacity.
HUAL Takes 2 More Newbuilds
HUAL has entered into long-term time charter arrangements for two large car-carrier newbuildings. The vessels will be built at the Uljanik Shipyard in Croatia and will be delivered 1st half 2007. Leif Höegh & Co Ltd will own 49.5% in both vessels, which were ordered by Norwegian shipping investor Peter Gram. The Pure Car/Truck Carriers (PCTC) are well suited for HUAL's world wide trades and will have a deck capacity of about 59,000 sqm, two hoistable decks, ample high space capacity and a ramp capacity of 100 tons. The vessels will be technically managed by OSM Ship Management in Kristiansand. HUAL, the Ro/Ro car carrying unit of Leif Höegh & Co, is one of the world's leading operators of car carriers with a fleet of 45 Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) vessels in its commercial operation.
Flensburger Newbuilding No. 749
On Friday Dec 19 the naming and launching ceremony of a new 634 ft RoRo freight ferry will take place in Flensburg, Germany. The freight ferry is the thirteenth of fourteen RoRo vessels, which our longstanding Turkish customer U.N. Ro-Ro has ordered with Flensburger. U.N. Ro-Ro is in ownership of the private investor KKR (New York), who took over the shipping company U.N Ro-Ro in 2007. The vessel will be christened Cüneyt Solakoglu. Gothenburg, Rotterdam New Service Begins
The opening of a new freight service to Rotterdam is a welcome development, presenting further opportunities for Swedish industry. The company behind the new service is the ro-ro* carrier CLdN, whose vessels will call at the Port of Gothenburg twice a week. A new freight service has been introduced between Gothenburg and the continent, operated by Luxembourg-based ro-ro company CLdN. The company’s vessels will depart twice weekly from Logent Ports and Terminals at the Port of Gothenburg, bound for Rotterdam.
Ro-Ro Terminal in Assam to Boost Traffic
The government of India said berthing operation of a vessel was carried out at the newly-constructed Roll-on Roll-off (Ro-Ro) terminal on the Brahmaputra in Assam. DFDS Orders Two Large RoRos from China
Northern European shipping and logistics company DFDS said it has ordered another pair of large ro-ro ships from the Jinling Shipyard, doubling its order placed last year at the Chinese yard. DFDS signed a contract with Jinling in 2016 for the construction of two ro-ro vessels, each with 6,700 lane meter load capacity and space for 450 trailers. Now the company has ordered another two of these ships – its largest ever – to service freight customers across the North Sea from 2019 and 2020.

ConRo Vessel to be Launched
On Friday, August 11, 2006, the first of two Con-Ro vessels for the Belgium customer Cobelfret will be launched by Flensburg. Delivery is planned for November 2006. The new designs for Cobelfret are the largest vessels ever built at the yard. To date Flensburger has another 10 vessels on order, including: 1 Con-Ro ferry for Cobelfret N.V., 3 double-ended RoRo ferries for 1600 day passengers for BC Ferries, Canada, 2 RoRo ships for U.N RO-RO, and 4 RoRo vessels for an european owner.
RoRo to Launch in Germany
On October 28, 2005, the tenth vessel of a series of 12 for the Turkish customer U.N Ro-Ro will be named and launched from her building berth in Flensburg. The new vessel will be named UN Trieste. Godmother of the vessel will be Mrs. Süreyya Ulusoy, wife of Mr. Saffet Ulusoy, president of U.N. Ro-Ro.
Two months after a Canadian shipowner applied Ecospeed for the first time to one of his ro/ro vessels, he decided to send a second ro/ro ship into drydock in Las Palmas to have the old paint system on the underwater hull completely stripped off to bare steel to be replaced with Ecospeed. The Ecospeed system is designed to be applied in two homogeneous coats and the overcoating time is from three or four hours to weeks or months. It is designed to have a life expectancy of 25 years and is 100% non-toxic.

Ports America promoted Steve Loevsky, formerly vice president-cruise operations division, to vice president operations – auto, ro-ro and cruise. Loevsky will lead Ports America’s auto and ro-ro business, including full oversight of safety, quality and productivity. P/L.
