Pirates Attack Cargo Ship off Somalia

On Friday, August 13, EU NAVFOR ATALANTA Joint Operation Centre received an alert according to which the Turkish-flagged cargo vessel Anatolia (IMO 9005869) was under attack by a skiff with four or five armed persons on board.Reportedly, the skiff attempted to approach the vessel and opened fire with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades (RPG). Armed Group Attacks FPSO, Kidnaps Crew in Nigeria

US Navy Seizes Thousands of AK-47s in the Gulf of Aden

More than 2,500 AK-47 automatic rifles were seized from a stateless skiff in the international waters of the Gulf of Aden at the end of August.U.S. Navy sailors aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) discovered the illicit weapons shipment during counter-trafficking mission on August 28.The Navy said 2,521 guns were confiscated from the skiff, which was determined to be stateless following a flag verification boarding conducted in accordance with international law.

Maritime Piracy Activity is at a 22-year Low -Report

Global maritime piracy activity fell to its lowest level in over two decades, according to the latest International Maritime Bureau (IMB) report. The 180 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships reported to the International Chamber of Commerce’s (ICC) IMB in 2017 was the lowest annual number since 1995, when 188 incidents were reported. According to the IMB, pirates boarded 136 vessels in 2017, while 22 attacks were attempted, 16 vessels fired upon and six vessels hijacked.

Gas Tanker Attacked Near Key Shipping Lane Off Yemen

Unknown assailants attacked a gas tanker off the coast of Yemen close to the Bab al-Mandab waterway in the latest flare up in an area through which much of the world's oil passes, shipping and security officials said on Wednesday. The incident, the first attack on a commercial ship since July, followed missile attacks in recent weeks on military craft, including U.S. navy vessels, which were launched from Yemen that had already raised risks for merchant shipping. Shipping group Teekay said its LNG (liquefied natural gas) tanker Galicia Spirit "experienced a suspected piracy attack whilst off the coast of Yemen" on Oct. 25. "No third parties managed to board the vessel during the incident and all crew members are safe and have been accounted for," Teekay said in a statement.

Last week contracts were signed at the VEKA head office in Werkendam by Stefhan van den Hil from VEKA Group bv (right) and Leo van Zon, Van der Velden Marine Systems B.V. (left). VEKA Group has signed contracts with Van der Velden Marine Systems for 15 complete maneuvering systems consisting of an integrated alarm and control steering panel, hydraulics, steering gear and high lift rudders. The installations are required for newly designed inland tankers from the “RPG” series as ordered by the Belgium based Plouvier Transport N.V. and her daughter company Intership AG.

Pirates Approach Tanker in Bab El Mandeb

The U.S. Navy Maritime Liaison Office in Bahrain (MARLO) has advised that on or about 12:30 UTC on 14 April, the Master of an oil tanker reported being approached by a white-blue skiff in position 12.25.00 North - 043.43.00 East, in the Bab El Mandeb (BAM). Seven pirates were reportedly on the skiff armed with an RPG moved toward the oil tanker. Procedures IAW BMP4 were conducted including sounding the alarm and activating fire hoses. The armed security team (AST) noticed a ladder on the skiff and it moved away when the AST showed their weapons. Source IMB. According to GAC, it is recommended vessels within the vicinity of this alert operate with a heightened level of security and report any suspicious activity to MSCHOA, UKMTO or MARLO.

LNG – Who Cares?

You say you don’t work on an LNG ship? You should care nevertheless. Just ten years ago, LNG Import terminals were being built and/or contemplated throughout the United States. Then, it was widely expected that Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports would account for a large percent of the energy consumption in the US. Fast forward 10 years and we find that industry has made a complete 180 degree turn around. Instead of the US being one of the world’s greatest importers of LNG, it is more than likely that the United States will one way be one of the major exporters of this frigid liquid.

Somali Pirates Sentenced for the Murder of Four Americans

Somali nationals Ahmed Muse Salad, a/k/a “Afmagalo,” 27, Abukar Osman Beyle, 33, and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar, 31, who were previously found guilty of piracy, murder within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States, violence against maritime navigation, conspiracy to commit violence against maritime navigation resulting in death, kidnapping resulting in death, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, hostage taking resulting in death, conspiracy to commit hostage taking resulting in death and multiple firearms offenses, were sentenced this week. Men Firing at Suez Canal Container Ship Video

The Youtube clip carries a logo featuring a black Islamist flag & the name of the "al-Firqan Brigade and shows two men firing rocket propelled grenades at a passing COSCO container ship. The incident had minimal effect on the ship or on canal traffic. Any major assault on the canal would hurt Egypt's economy, which depends heavily on revenue from the 192-km (120 mile) waterway, the quickest sea route between Asia and Europe, reports The Jerusalem Post. After the canal attack, the army said three people had been arrested for firing machine guns at the ship. The head of the Canal Authority, Mohab Memish, later stated that an RPG had been used. Life in Prison for Somali Pirates who Murdered Four Americans

Somali nationals Ahmed Muse Salad, a/k/a “Afmagalo,” 25, Abukar Osman Beyle, 20, and Shani Nurani Shiekh Abrar, 29, who were previously found guilty by jury of all 26 counts charged to include piracy, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, hostage taking resulting in death, kidnapping resulting in death and multiple firearms offenses, were sentenced today by a federal jury. The three defendants were sentenced to life-in-prison for their roles in the February 22, 2011 murder of four Americans aboard the sailing vessel Quest.

Management Changes at Resource Power Group

The Resource Power Group appointed Chimas Sylve as Spare Parts Coordinator at its new Deer Park facility near the Houston Ship Channel. “Chimas brings with him knowledge of not only the MaK engine line, but also MaK gas engines as well as the entire Caterpillar engine line,” said Mike Kriner, Branch Manager for the Houston facility. “Our Houston facility is less than a year old, but is already growing rapidly both in medium speed engine and turbocharger services,” said Mike. Previously Mr. Sylve spent nine years at the parent company, Louisiana Cat, where he provided both parts and service support for the Caterpillar line of engines including the MaK gas and diesel products.

Tankship Damaged in Nigeria Pirate Attack

The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) notes pirate attacks off Nigeria, Indonesia & Mauritania in past week. A product tanker under way noticed three skiffs approaching it at high speed. A suspected mother vessel was observed on radar at a distance of around 1.2nm. As the skiffs closed, the duty officer raised alarm and non essential crew mustered in citadel. Vessel commenced evasive manoeuvres and headed towards a nearby oil terminal to seek assistance from naval guard vessels. A further two skiffs were noticed approaching the vessel and all skiffs fired towards the bridge and accommodation. A RPG was also fired but missed the vessel. The attack lasted fro nearly one hour before the skiffs broke off. Crew safe but vessel sustained damage due to the firing.

RPG Pirate Attackers Sent to Court

EU Naval Force transfers 12 suspect pirates to Mauritius for prosecution after attack on merchant vessel off Somalia. At the time of the attack on 5th January, 2013, the master of the merchant vessel sent out a distress call reporting that he and his crew were coming under attack from a fast moving boat, armed with rocket propelled grenades (RPG). Sailors from the EU Naval Force French Frigate Surcouf  were later able to arrest the men suspected of carrying out this attack and brought them on board the warship for full enquiries to be made. When suspect pirates are apprehended at sea, EU Naval Force always seeks, where possible, a legal finish and after engaging with Mauritian authorities…

Piracy, Armed Robbery Update

To date, the following reports were noted by ICC Commercial Crime Services (CCS), the anti-crime arm of the International Chamber of Commerce. 09.01.2013: 0920 UTC: Guyana, South America. Two robbers armed with guns and long knives boarded a berthed LPG tanker from the offshore side by using a grappling hook. They took the C/O and shore security guard as hostage, proceeded to the master’s cabin and stole ship’s cash and escaped. No injury to crew. 08.01.2013: 0750 UTC: Posn: 12:40.2N - 043:16.1E, Bab El Mandeb TSS, Red Sea. About 5-6 persons each in two skiffs doing 14 knots approached a gas carrier ship underway. Alarm raised, anti-piracy measures initiated, distress message was transmitted and the armed security team on board fired a warning flare and showed their weapons.

Jailed Pirates Fired RPG's at Tanker 'For Fun' Said Defence

The Supreme Court of the Seychelles recently found 15 Somalis guilty of piracy and jailed them for up to 18 years. Judge Mohan Burhan rejected their defence that they were fishing and having fun as they fired rockets at a tanker in the Arabian Sea and that weapons – including assault rifles – which they dumped at sea when a surveillance helicopter appeared were only for their own protection, reports the 'Seychelles Nation'. Captain Stanislav Ususchev of the oil tanker MV Sunshine informed the court he saw a skiff approaching his vessel at 24 knots which caught up with the tanker in order to launch a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) towards the bridge.

Kriner Joins Resource Power Group

Engine sales and service company, Resource Power Group (RPG) has appointed Michael Kriner as the company’s Houston Branch Manager. The focus of the Houston branch of the MaK and large bore engine business will be Texas and the Gulf of Mexico territories. Kriner is a graduate of the US Merchant Marine Academy. He was previously employed as the Houston Operations Manager for ABB Turbocharger, Inc and before that as Repair Manager for Houston Ship Repair. “Bringing Mike on board is a key step in RPG’s plan to build a strong engine service and repair presence to the Houston market. Mike has a tremendous amount of experience in the turbocharger business and a strong background in ship repair.

RPG Acquires Gen Turbo Inc.

Resource Power Group (RPG) acquired the assets of Gen Turbo Inc., a supplier of parts and services for large bore diesel engine turbochargers in Miami, FL. Gen Turbo Inc. (GTI) is recognized in the industry for delivering to it’s customers a combination of affordable, high quality, and highly technical turbocharger services. Genato Samson and Celso Villanueva, the founders of  GTI, are considered to be experts with ABB, KBB, and Napier type turbochargers. Mr. Samson was previously employed by ABB turbocharger as a Service Engineer and an ABB turbocharger Workshop Manager. He will assume the role of RPG’s Turbocharger Workshop and Sales Manager. Mr. Villanueva was previously employed by MaK as a Service and Commissioning Engineer.
