Kalmar, the provider of cargo-handling solutions and services to ports, said that it has been awarded a contract to supply Asyaport Liman A.S. SC Ports, DHEC Get Grant for Crane Tech
South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) were awarded a $2 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) grant program to upgrade the engines of 12 rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes.The EPA awarded the grant to DHEC, in partnership with SCPA. South Carolina Ports Record Profitable 2013 Operations
On the heels of announcing its fiscal year 2013 volume results, including a nine percent gain in container volume and a more than 14 percent increase in non-containerized cargo at its two ports, the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) reported operating earnings of $12.72 million, which was a net gain of $5.45 million from the previous year. Operating revenues at the agency closed at $140.49 million for the 12-month period, seven percent ahead of the previous fiscal year's $130.95 million. "Given our aggressive capital investments over the next several years, it is essential to maintain a solid financial position and a steady stream of funds toward these important projects," said Jim Newsome, the SCPA's president and CEO.
Cargotec Introduces Gantry Crane
Cargotec has introduced a new rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane, Kalmar SmartPower RTG, which minimizes fuel consumption and provides a balance between productivity and cost efficiency. The new crane is equipped with an intelligent power management system and a significantly smaller diesel engine, compared to conventional RTGs. These technological innovations lead to a fuel consumption of only 9 liters per operational hour in typical RTG applications. "In a typical RTG operation, between 9 and 18 containers are handled per hour,” said RTG Product Manager Marko Rasinen. In the Kalmar SmartPower RTG, the new power management system ensures the most economical engine RPM is used at all times during operation and controls speeds and accelerations to reduce the peak power requirement.
Konecranes Receives Third RTG Order
On May 31, Konecranes announced a rubber-tired gantry (RTG) order from Malta Freeport Terminals that included an option for a further ten RTGs. Malta Freeport Terminals has now taken up this option, and in August the companies signed an agreement for the additional ten RTGs. The crane deliveries will start in the second quarter of 2008. This is Konecranes' third RTG order from Malta Freeport Terminals, which after delivery of this order will have 30 Konecranes RTGs in its fleet. The latest order is part of Malta Freeport Terminals' ongoing project to increase terminal capacity in response to growing container traffic. Existing RTGs are being replaced with more productive and reliable cranes to speed up operations and minimize down time.
