ABS NS Software Helps Secunda Marine

ABS Nautical Systems (ABS NS) has taken the traditional purchasing relationship and automated it to provide shipowners and operators with a more efficient way of obtaining competitive bids and more responsive service with its eProcurement product, an extension of its Purchasing & Inventory software module. Nova Scotia-based Secunda Marine Services Limited (Secunda) is the latest operator to implement ABS NS eProcurement as part of its overall fleet management strategy. The SafeNet eProcurement solution simplifies the placing of Requests for Quotation (RFQs) via email to multiple sources. Savings flow from the automatic population of a client’s SafeNet database with vendor RFQs, eliminating the need for the re-keying of prices and delivery times.

Seabulk Selects ABS-NS SafeNet

Seabulk Offshore Ltd., has selected ABS Nautical Systems SafeNet fleet management system for 14 supply, crew and utility boats operating in the US Gulf of Mexico. "The strength of the SafeNet system is the complete integration that exists between the various management modules," said ABS Nautical Systems' senior business development manager Joe Woods. Seabulk Offshore has contracted for the Maintenance & Repair, Purchasing & Inventory and Financial Reporting modules. "Data need only be entered once to be available within each of these modules, vastly simplifying the control of the fleet and eliminating the possibility of incorrect duplicate entry," said Woods.

Alliance Marine Adds Additional ABS NS Software

Alliance Marine Services (AMS) has contracted with ABS Nautical Systems for an additional four modules from their suite of advanced SafeNet fleet management system software. AMS has contracted for the Maintenance & Repair, Purchasing & Inventory, Financial Reporting and Replication Manager modules of ABS NS SafeNet. This brings AMS participation in the suite of fully integrated software to six modules all utilized on their FPSO units and other vessels. The organization currently uses the Crew Management and Crew Payroll modules. AMS has been compliant with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code Standards since 1998. The company is providing marine support services to several Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels in W. Africa as well as China.

118-ft. Yacht Designed to Travel to 70 Knots

Three Vericor Power Systems' TF50 marine aeroderivative gas turbines have been selected to power the 118 Wallypower high-speed yacht being built by Intermarine Shipyard, Sarzana, Italy for Wally Yacht. This is Wally Yacht's first foray into high-speed power yachts, and the company's initial application of gas turbines. Wally Yacht, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, is a world-renowned designer of high-speed sailing and power yachts. The 118-ft. yacht will feature three TF50 gas turbines in a Combined Diesel Or Gas (CODOG) turbine configuration. Two TF50s will be used as side or "wing" engines, with one small auxiliary diesel engine connected to each wing engine. The diesels will provide for very slow maneuvering only.

Given the sheer enormity and fluidity of the STCW-95 Code, it became abundantly apparent to MITAGS and to our trustee companies that organizations and mariners would need substantial assistance in complying with the Code. Therefore, we began a complete revision to our curriculum, which meant that we would have to commit substantial resources to assist in this effort. The Global Marine Distress Safety System (GMDSS) was an early example of the issues associated with the implementation of STCW-95 Code. Right from the beginning, MITAGS advocated meaningful GMDSS training curriculum standards. MITAGS understood that, in a distress situation, a mariner's best opportunity for survival would be a complete knowledge of GMDSS procedures.

New Version of ABS SafeNet Released

DRS Gets Contract for S$7m Shipboard Communication Systems

DRS Technologies has received a $7m contract from the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. to provide fiber-optic data multiplex system (FODMS) – navigation sensor distributors for the second KDX-III destroyer of the Republic of Korea’s Navy (ROKN). The FODMS is a general-purpose, dual-network system that provides data and integrated communications between propulsion and power control systems, steering, navigation sensors, weapons systems — as well as Aegis combat systems. It is a complete information transfer system designed to meet evolving ship communications requirements and to handle data that are critical to ship operations.

ABS Introduces Dynamic Checklists

ABS announced the introduction of electronically prepared, vessel type-specific, dynamic checklists for surveys of ABS-classed vessels. The new checklists are generated for the attending surveyor at the time the survey is ordered. The surveyor is automatically provided with a checklist specific to the type of vessel he or she is attending based on thirteen different parameters that are considered by the system. The dynamic checklist module can produce approximately 600,000 unique checklists from those parameters. An enhancement to the survey services ABS offers to clients has been effected with the introduction of electronically prepared, vessel type-specific, dynamic checklists for surveys of ABS-classed vessels. The new checklists are generated for the attending surveyor at the time the survey is ordered. As they are composed in real-time, they include the most up-to-date information contained in the survey record with respect to the vessel. They are also specifically tailored to the type of vessel and to the specific survey or audit that is to be carried out. “This is a major step forward in terms of speed, efficiency, accuracy and transparency of the survey process,” says ABS Chief Surveyor Lenny Pendexter.
