More than $97 Mln in Maintenance Planned for US-flag Lakers

U.S.-flag lakers idled for the winter season will undergo more than $97 million in maintenance and modernization work at multiple Great Lakes shipyards before returning to service in March. USCG Rescues Boaters Near Big Coppitt Key

The Coast Guard rescued two overdue boaters near Big Coppitt Key, Tuesday.Coast Guard Sector Key West watchstanders received notification of two teenagers on an overdue 16-foot skiff who were supposed to return to shore before sunset. The boat had no navigation lights or radio onboard. Watchstanders diverted a Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 helicopter crew to respond.The helicopter crew arrived on scene, located the two waving, hoisted them and took them to Key West International Airport with no reported injuries.

USCG Slaps Illegal PV operator with Fine

Representatives from Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Chicago announced that the owner of two recreational pleasure boats has been fined $80,000 for operating as an illegal passenger vessel business on Lake Michigan for at least the past two years.Robert Glick of Chicago, owner of the 35-foot boats Allora and Fun, was charged with violating three separate federal regulations for each boat while operating a business that involved transporting paying passengers.The fine representsā€¦

Electronic Inclinometer for Tugboat Safety

Danish marine safety equipment manufacturer, Daniamant, has launched a tugboat version of its renowned Electronic Inclinometer, an advanced heel and pitch measuring device. The DanEI-300T fulfils the most recent Bureau Veritas Groupā€™s regulations for escort tugboats and is approved by German BSH to the IMO (International Maritime Organization) performance standard MSC.363(92):2013. Bureau Veritasā€™ classification rules in the January 2019 edition stipulate that escort tugboats must be equipped with a calibrated heeling angle measurement system, otherwise referred to as an inclinometer.

Coast Guard Interdicts 25 Migrants Off Puerto Rico

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier (WPC-1115) repatriated 22 of 25 Dominican migrants to a Dominican Republic Navy vessel Monday, following the interdiction of a makeshift boat Saturday, approximately 20 nautical miles northwest of Mona Island, Puerto Rico.Three of the interdicted migrants are facing possible federal prosecution by the U.S. Attorneyā€™s Office for the District of Puerto Rico for illegally attempting to reenter the United States.The Coast Guard, and federal and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico law enforcement partners have interdicted more than 400 migrants and stopped several narcotics smuggling attempts since October of 2018."The migrants were attempting to make the transit across an ocean passage in a vessel that was inherently unsafe due to overloadingā€¦

Survitec Receives DNV GL Certification

Blount to Build Icebreaking Tug for NYPA
