Longtime Maersk executive Jack Mahoney has been named president and CEO of Westwood Shipping Lines, Inc., a Puyallup, Wash. based independent conbulk liner carrier in the north Transpacific trade. He succeeds Guy Stephenson who is retiring after 13 years in the role. It seems like a lifetime coming, but the IMO International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM) has been approved and will enter into force on September 8, 2017. Deemed as an environmental necessity, it creates an enormous operational challenge for the maritime industry. As ship owners, system installers and BWM system manufacturers alike prepare for the many challenges associated with implementation, it would be wise to more closely evaluate the real (and sometimes hidden) risks to system operators and manufacturers.

Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) has added three regional sales directors to its Marketing and Sales Division, with posts in the Americas, Europe and Asia/Middle East. According to the shipyard, their prime objectives will be to increase yard exposure, as well as develop future projects with existing and new customers for their refit, refurbishment or revitalization projects. Andre Szadzinski joined GBSL in August 2016 as Regional Sales Director for North and South America.

Marine power generation and climate control products manufacturer Northern Lights has opened its fifth branch office, in Kenner, La, to enhance service to Gulf and inland waterways boat builders and vessel operators. The new Northern Lights Gulf branch, which will employ a full-time sales, parts and service staff, will warehouse marine, industrial and commercial series products. The new branch will service customers in the Gulf of Mexico and navigable inland waterways in the Midwest and Eastern regions of the U.S., including the region’s key ports: New Orleans, Houston, Pensacola and Paducah.

Ross Glendinning was appointed Senior Vice President, Service Division of Alfa Laval Inc. in January 2016. Marianne MacTurk will retire from her position as sales manager at Pima Valve, Inc. after three decades as software technician, general office management and international sales management.    Adrienne Link has been appointed to fill MacTurk’s role, Pima Valve announced.

Holland America Line has promoted Christine Thurlow to director of national accounts sales, North America, on the company’s National Accounts Sales team. Thurlow will report to Charles J. Dunwoody, CTC, senior director, national accounts, North America. In addition to her Canadian portfolio, she will take on Holland America Line and Seabourn sales responsibilities for Virtuoso, Signature Travel Network, Costco, Our Vacation Center, Expedia and Travelocity. “Christine has been with the company for many years and she’s continued to grow and evolve as her role has developed,” said Dunwoody. Thurlow joined Holland America Line in 1995 and has held various sales management positions during her tenure. Most recently she was manager of national accounts for Canada, a position she held since 2001.

OSV fleet owners Tidewater have elected the recently retired President of FMC Technologies, Robert L. Potter to join its Board of Directors for a term beginning December 1, 2013 and expiring in July 2014. Robert L. Potter will retire from his position as President of FMC Technologies, Inc. on November 30, 2013, a position he has held since August 2012, following 40 years of service with the company. Mr. Potter joined FMC Technologies in 1973 after his graduation from Rice University.

MOL (America) Inc. issued a release announcing several changes to its North American sales management, including the promotion of Richard Craig to the position of executive vice president, sales and operations. Additionally, Richard Jung, who currently assistant vice president of sales, central region, has been appointed to assume the duties of vice president of sales in replacing Dennis Sheehan, vice president of sales, who has decided to leave MOL (America) Inc. to pursue other opportunities.
