Liquid Hydrogen SOV Concept Unveiled

Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) has unveiled a concept for a first-of-its kind service operations vessel (SOV) that runs on liquid hydrogen.The French-headquartered company said it has been working alongside Norwegian naval architecture firm Salt Ship Design as well as main equipment suppliers, fuel providers, class and flag authorities, and others to produce the concept—with support from the European Commission.The groundbreaking SOV, currently in the concept design phase, would be able to operate 95% of the time with zero carbon emissions, only releasing water during standard operations.

Gondan Cuts First Steel for New USV for Major Industry Alliance

Spain-based Gondan Shipbuilders has started the construction of an advanced remotely operated unmanned surface vehicle (USV) for a company made up of DeepOcean, Solstad and Østensjø Rederi alliance called USV A/S.The project focuses on improving subsea operations, targeting a reduction of CO2 emissions by more than 90% compared to conventional methods.The new USV will be used for underwater maintenance and inspection missions.Designed by Salt Ship Design, the vessel will feature a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system

NKT Orders $270M Cable Layer from Vard

Norwegian ship designer and builder Vard has confirmed the Danish subsea cable company NKT is behind the order for the construction of the new cable laying vessel.The contract, valued between $218-270 million (€200-250 million), was signed mid December 2023 by Vard and NKT HV Cables, a Swedish-based turn-key power cable manufacturer and installation company, which is part of NKT.The hull for the cable laying vessel will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania and outfitted and delivered

Norwegian ship designer and builder Vard on Friday announced it has signed a contract to construct a cable laying vessel for an undisclosed customer. The value of the contract is between EUR 200 – 250 million.The vessel is designed by Norwegian company Salt Ship Design AS. The hull for the vessel will be built at Vard Tulcea in Romania and outfitted and delivered from one of Vard’s yards in Norway in Q4 2026. Vard said it will announce further information about the contract at a later stage

Brunvoll signed a contract with Westcon Yards for the delivery of a wide array of products to the new fishing vessel for owner M.V. Quantus Limited and Peter & J. Johnstone Limited, based in Peterhead, UK. Included is the Retractable Azimuth Combi Thruster. The vessel is designed by Salt Ship Design and will be delivered from the yard by the end of 2025.The Brunvoll delivery for Quantus will consist of main propulsion and gear, the BruCon Propulsion and Thruster Control (PTC) system

XLCC Concludes Model Testing for Its New Cable Layer

U.K. based cable company XLCC announced it has completed model testing on its new cable laying vessel (CLV) in the Netherlands.XLCC has partnered closely with the vessel designer Salt Ship Design, who has planned the vessel from conception using 3D engineering software.XLCC also partnered with SeaTec, the technical services division of global ship management company V.Group. SeaTec was appointed to develop the initial statement of requirements and has continued to support XLCC

Ross Offshore Charters Fishing Vessel for Offshore Survey Work

Norwegian offshore energy industry services firm Ross Offshore has agreed to charter Teige Gruppen's Sunny Lady fishing vessel for future offshore activities.The initial agreement is for the charter for the summer of 2023, but the parties envision long-term cooperation, too.Ross Offshore will use the vessel for seabed surveys. The vessel will be equipped with an observation ROV and be able to perform mapping- and environmental surveys."The first project starts in May, and we anticipate a large demand going forward

Subsea services provider DeepOcean and the Norwegian offshore vessel owner Østensjø Rederi have agreed for Østensjø's Edda Freya vessel to remain with DeepOcean for longer, on a new 2-year charter.“We are pleased that we have come to an agreement with DeepOcean for Edda Freya, a vessel that was designed together with and has been on contract with DeepOcean since delivery in 2016. We are satisfied with the terms and our long and solid relationship with DeepOcean.” says Kristian Vea, CEO of Østensjø Rederi.Edda Freya is a hybrid-powered construction vessel suited for worldwide operations.

Edda Wind's Newbuild CSOV Sets Off for Sea Trials

Edda Wind's Edda Breeze Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOVs) started sea trials over the weekend, Gondan Shipbuilders, the Spanish shipyard that built the vessel, said Tuesday.The CSOV left the Eo estuary to set course for the Port of Gijón, where it will remain for the next few weeks to complete its sea trials program.The vessel built for the Norwegian shipowner Edda Wind AS has a length of 88,3 m and a beam of 19,7 m. It has been designed by Salt Ship Design, and it is prepared for the installation of zero-emission hydrogen technology.

XLCC to Order New Cable Laying Vessel

Gondan Launches CSOV for Edda Wind

Spanish shipbuilder GONDAN said Wednesday that its yard in Figueras launched a new commissioning service operation vessel (CSOV) for Norwegian shipowner Edda Wind AS. The newbuild is the first in a series of four CSOVs scheduled for delivery from 2022. The ships are designed for service operations during the commissioning and operation of offshore wind farms.Designed by Salt Ship Design, the vessel is 88.3 meters long with a 19.7-meter beam, and it is prepared for the installation of zero-emission hydrogen technology.

Salt Ship Design Acquires Albatross

Norwegian-headquartered Salt Ship Design said it has completed its acquisition of Serbian naval architecture firm Albatross Ship Design.Albatross was founded in 2001 as a member of Norway's Vik Sandvik Group, working under name Vik Sandvik Albatross until it was acquired by Finnish technology company Wärtsilä and renamed Wärtsilä Ship Design Serbia in 2009. It became a private independent company with the new name Albatross Ship Design in 2016.Salt Ship Design, which specializes in the design of offshore and fishing vessels, said it has previously worked with Albatross Ship Design on various aspects of many vessel projects.Salt now adds 20 employees through the integration of Albatross.

Cemre Receives Order for Two Fish Carriers

Turkish shipbuilder Cemre said it has signed a contract with Seistar Holding to build two environmentally friendly live fish carriers.Developed by the Norwegian SALT Ship Design, the newbuilds will be equipped with circular fish tanks. The 69.9- and 110-meter-long vessels will be built according to the DNV GL class rules and will carry the Norwegian flag.The larger of the two vessels, with a total of 8,000 cubic meters load capacity in the fish holds and deadweight of approximately 12

Schottel will provide a range of propulsion systems for Louis Dreyfus Armateurs's second wind farm service operation vessel (SOV) the Wind of Hope.The new walk-to-work vessel, a sister vessel to the Wind of Change SOV, is currently under construction at Cemre shipyard in Turkey and will enter service operating under a long-term contract with Ørsted.The propulsion system of the vessel designed by Salt Ship Design vessel is powered by four diesel generators, which drive the electric motors of the Schottel propulsion package.

Østensjø Rederi Orders Four Newbuilds

Aiming to meet increasing demand in the offshore wind market, Norwegian owner Østensjø Rederi said it has signed a letter of intent (LOI) for the construction of four commissioning service operation vessels (CSOV) to be built at at the Astilleros Gondán shipyard in Spain for delivery from 2022.Designed by Salt Ship Design in Norway, the 88.3-meter-long vessels will be utilized for service operations during the commissioning and operation of offshore wind farms. Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven Verft today delivered the 95-metre-long anchor handling vessel Maersk Minder, the fourth of six vessels in Maersk Supply Services’ Starfish series.The naming ceremony was held at Kleven Verft this afternoon, led by the shipyard’s new CEO Karsten Sævik, with Anni Bak as sponsor.“This is vessel number four in the series, and the yard has demonstrated its ability to again construct a very advanced and sophisticated vessel,” Sævik said. “We are very grateful for the efforts made by all suppliers

DESS Aquaculture Adds New 60M Harvest Vessel

DESS Aquaculture Shipping AS, a joint venture between Solstad Farstad ASA (SOFF) and Marine Harvest ASA, took delivery of the harvest vessel “Aqua Merdø” on May 24th 2018.    The vessel will commence its 10-year charter contract with Marine Harvest upon delivery at location within few days.   “Aqua Merdø” is developed in close collaboration between the owners and Salt Ship Design and has been built by Myklebust Verft, Norway. Long term financing of “Aqua Merdø” is arranged by ABN AMRO Bank N.V.   “Aqua Merdø” is a harvest vessel with a capacity of handling up to 20,000 fish per hour, and transport up to 400 tons of fish to the processing plant.   DESS Aquaculture Shipping was established in June 2016 as a joint venture between Marine Harvest and Deep Sea Supply.

Louis Dreyfus Orders Wind Farm Vessel

The Louis Dreyfus Armateurs Group (LDA) and Ørsted, the Danish global leader in renewables, reinforce their 2017 partnership with the order of a second service operation vessel (SOV) dedicated to Hornsea Project Two offshore wind farm off the English coast. As sister vessel of the Wind of Change, the first SOV ordered by LDA in 2017, this second ship will also be designed in close cooperation with Salt Ship Design and will be built by CEMRE for a delivery in 2021. The new 84-meter-long ship will be equipped by a hybrid propulsion system using diesel generators with variable speed

ABB will optimize the safety and environmental credentials of a new Louis Dreyfus Armateurs wind farm Service Operation Vessel (SOV) by installing Onboard DC Grid power distribution to enable the cost-efficient integration of batteries. As an integral part of the power system, the Power and Energy Management System (PEMS) will ensure safe and efficient operation of the vessel. The hybrid system enables lean operation with fewer running generators without compromising on safety, meaning less maintenance and better fuel consumption over the long-term.
