ACMF Receives Grant from Former SeaFreight Boss

The American Caribbean Maritime Foundation (ACMF) announced it received a contribution of $150,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Roland Malins-Smith. Mr. Malins-Smith, now retired, is founder of SeaFreight Line Ltd. which was acquired by Crowley in 2015.The ACMF funds scholarships and provides grants for classrooms and other facilities at the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU).Malins-Smith, born in Grenada, began his career in 1970 researching shipping and transportation issues for the then Caribbean Free Trade Area (Carifta) Secretariat based in Georgetown Guyana.

Oil Spill Response: USCG, CCG & Foss Team

Canadian, U.S. Coast Guards and Foss Maritime coordinate a textbook response operation. Robust response trumps the need for later salvage. In the early hours of Friday, October 17, the crew of the Russian cargo ship Simushir attempted to repair a broken oil heater. TOTE, Saltchuk Secure Financing for Marlin Class Vessels

Today, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) announced a $324.6 million loan guarantee for TOTE Shipholdings and Saltchuk Resources for their Marlin Class vessels. The two new Marlin Class vessels, which will be the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships, will serve the Puerto Rico trade and will be complete in 2015 and 2016. This financing is made available under the Title XI Loan Guarantee Program. TOTE and Saltchuk qualified for this loan as the new ship build is an advancement in shipbuilding technology and being constructed at a U.S. shipyard.

Hearing to Examine Status of US Merchant Marine

The U.S. Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, chaired by U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.), will hold a hearing next week to examine issues impacting the U.S. merchant marine, the fleet of U.S. documented, or flagged, commercial vessels which carries imports and exports during peacetime and becomes a naval auxiliary to deliver troops and war materiel during wartime. This hearing, entitled “The Status of the Merchant Marine,” is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 in 2167 Rayburn House Office Building.

TOTE’s Marlin Class Ships Enter Next Build Phase

The arrival of the world’s first dual-fuel slow-speed engine to General Dynamics’ NASSCO Shipyard marks the next phase of construction for TOTE’s Marlin Class vessels, projected by TOTE to be the world’s safest and cleanest containerships. Doosan Engine, under license from MAN Diesel and Turbo, delivered the first 8L70ME-GI engine. Earlier this year, Doosan completed the engine’s Factory Acceptance Tests, a culmination of months of testing to ensure compliance with U.S. regulations and restrictions.

The acquisition includes the premier shipping and logistics company for the Bahamas and Caribbean, Tropical Shipping and all of its related transportation, consolidation and cargo insurance companies. As an international foreign flagged shipping and logistics operation, Tropical and its related companies will become Saltchuk’s sixth line of business.

Carlile Transportation Joins Saltchuk Companies

Carlile Transportation Systems, one of the largest trucking and logistics companies in Alaska, has been acquired by Saltchuk Resources, a Seattle-based family of diversified transportation and petroleum distribution companies. “Our relationship with Saltchuk is 20 years long, already having been friends, vendors and customers," said Harry McDonald, Carlile CEO and cofounder. Carlile will remain a standalone company headquartered in Anchorage. “As with all of the Saltchuk companies, we will reinvest in Carlile’s assets, pursue growth opportunities and build on the very strong foundation the McDonald family has built for the future,” said Mark Tabbutt, of Saltchuk. Carlile’s 700 employees will join Saltchuk’s national team of 5,500 persons.

President of TOTE Services, Captain Jorge Aguirre, retires after 33 years with the company, to be replaced by Retired Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, Philip H. Greene, Jr. Captain Aguirre spent 16 years at sea, coming ashore with TOTE Services in June of 1980 as a Port Captain at the Philadelphia headquarters of the company, then known as Interocean Management Corporation or IOM. ECA Compliance Waiver Granted to US Shipowner TOTE

EPA and USCG facilitate a move by Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) to convert its vessels to alternative fuels. Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) has received a permit providing a conditional waiver from the current Emissions Control Area (ECA) fuel sulfur content requirements of MARPOL Annex VI regulation 14.4 while the company pursues conversion of its vessels to alternative fuels. The permit was issued by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) under authority provided in Regulation 3 of Annex VI.

Foss: West Coast Icon on Environmental Cutting Edge

Foss Maritime, founded by the matriarch of the Foss family in 1889, is as much a cultural icon on the U.S. West Coast as McAllister or Moran are on the East Coast. Norwegian immigrant Thea Foss began the business when she bought her first row boat in Tacoma, Wash. and painted it the signature green and white. NRC to Acquire Foss Environmental Services

National Response Corporation (NRC), a wholly owned subsidiary of SEACOR SMIT Inc., and SaltChuk Resources, Inc. (SaltChuk), a private company based in Seattle, Wash., announced that they had signed a definitive agreement for NRC to acquire Foss Environmental Services (FES), a wholly owned subsidiary of SaltChuk. FES will be renamed NRC Environmental Services and will operate as an independent wholly owned NRC subsidiary Through its acquisition of FES, NRC will acquire additional spill response resources, existing contracts, and employ more than 175 people throughout the West Coast of the U.S. Its personnel and equipment in California will more than exceed the requirements of new California regulations, which are currently being phased in.

NASSCO and TOTE Christen the M. V. Midnight Sun

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) has joined with Totem Ocean Trailer Express, Inc. (TOTE) to christen the M. V. Midnight Sun, the first commercial dry cargo vessel to be built in the United States in 10 years. The Midnight Sun is the first of two new Orca-class trailerships being built by NASSCO for TOTE's service from Tacoma, Washington, to Anchorage, Alaska. Lynn Garvey, wife of Mike Garvey, Chairman of the Board of TOTE's parent company, Saltchuk Resources, Inc., and Lily Stevens, the daughter of Senator Ted Stevens (R- Alaska), were the ship's sponsors, christening the M. AmNav Announces Innovative New Tug Series

AmNav Maritime Services of San Francisco, Calif., is set to take delivery of the first in a new series of technologically advanced 5,000 to 7,000 hp Azmuthing Stern Drive (ASD) ship assist tugs to be built by Halter Marine, Inc. of Gulfport, Miss. Merritt added, "the 'Enhanced ASD Thruster Tugs' design integrates a wide beam and forward skeg hull form, ASD propulsion units, high performance engines, remotely controlled winches and an automated wheelhouse command system to meet the challenging demands of efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible ship handling requirements of today's modern ports and terminal facilities. Matson Completes the Sale of Two Ships

Matson Navigation Company, Inc. has completed the sale of two combination Ro/Ro /lift-on, lift-off containerships to Sea Star Line, LLC (Sea Star) in Jacksonville, Fla. The vessels, which have been bareboat chartered to Sea Star since the company was formed in 1998, will continue to be deployed in the Puerto Rico trade. The sale to Sea Star, which is owned jointly by SaltChuk Resources, Inc., Matson and Taino Star Investment, Inc., underscores the investors' long term commitment to the line's Puerto Rico service. Matson is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc. of Honolulu (Nasdaq:ALEX). The two ships, the SSs El Yunque and El Morro, were both built by Sun Ship Building and Dry Dock Company and initially placed in the U.S. Atlantic Coast-Puerto Rico trade.
