Cerberus Capital Management announced that one of its affiliates has entered into an agreement with TE Connectivity under which Cerberus will acquire TE's Subsea Communications business (SubCom).Headquartered in Eatontown, New Jersey, SubCom is a leading global supplier of subsea communications systems with approximately $700 million in revenue, based on fiscal year 2018 expectations. The business designs, manufactures, deploys, and maintains the subsea fiber optic cable systems that are vital for global communications.To date, SubCom has completed more than 100 cable systems and deployed over 610,000 kilometers of cable through its eight high-performance cable ships, which are among the most efficient and capable in the industry.

Mobile satellite communications company Inmarsat said it has partnered with satellite communications provider Network Innovations and maritime transportation provider Dunlap Towing to install Fleet One across its fleet of 12 vessels. For Dunlap, the Dutch Harbor and Pacific Coast routes in Alaskan waters have traditionally been challenging and its existing service did not offer the reliability required to transmit important operating and safety reports, communicate back to shore or make critical inter-fleet voice calls, according to Inmarsat.

A new piece of legislation, the Cuba Trade Act of 2015, was introduced in Congress Tuesday that aims to lift the Cuba embargo and allow for U.S. businesses in the private sector to trade freely with Cuba, while prohibiting taxpayer funds to be used on promotion or development of this new market. Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) says it heralds the biggest change to New Zealand’s commercial shipping sector in 15 years by welcoming the first operator into its new Maritime Operator Safety System (MOSS). Sanford’s Tauranga in-shore fishing operation entered the MOSS system at a formal presentation in Tauranga. Sanford operates four vessels out of Tauranga and has developed a comprehensive safety system covering the entire operation, from emergency procedures to maintenance, crew training and vessel details. MOSS, which is designed to improve operator and vessel safety, replaces the Safe Ship Management (SSM) system. It requires operators to develop a safety system that covers not only their vessels, but their entire operation.

Dave Sanford, interim chief of staff at Port Manatee, has been named to the National Academies of Science Marine Board, a Washington-based maritime advisory group. Sanford has accepted an appointment to a three-year term on the Marine Board, beginning Nov. 1. He brings to the board more than 40 years of maritime industry experience, including as director of navigation policy and legislation at the American Association of Port Authorities and in several senior executive capacities with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including as chief of civil works policy and chief of the Interagency and International Services Division. Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) has laid three charges against Sanford Ltd. after an investigation into alleged illegal dumping of oil into the sea of New Zealand’s Exclusive Economic Zone from the Korean foreign charter fishing vessel Pacinu, a vessel owned by Juahm Industries operating under charter in New Zealand to Sanford Ltd. Sanford is charged with illegal discharge of a harmful substance – oil – from the vessel (under s237 of the Maritime Transport Act), failing to notify MNZ of the discharge (s238), and failure to notify a pollution incident (s239). The discharge of a harmful substance charge carries a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment or a fine of $200,000.

Wilhelmsen Ships Services (WSS) late last month obtained global approval for its safety services from ABS (American Bureau of Shipping). The approval comes after a two year process involving the entire safety services team and covers all safety services worldwide. “Along with Radio Holland, we are now the only maritime service provider in the world with global approval from ABS, and indeed, the only service provider within the safety sector. We are immensely proud of this,” said John Sanford, Technical Sales Manager Safety for the Americas.
