Iran Grain Ships Stranded in Brazil due to U.S. Sanctions
Two Iranian vessels have been stranded for weeks at Brazilian ports, unable to head back to Iran due to lack of fuel, which state-run oil firm Petrobras refuses to sell them due to sanctions imposed by the United States.The vessels Bavand and Termeh came to Brazil a couple months ago carrying urea, a petrochemical product used as fertilizer. They were expected to load corn and return to Iran, but lacked enough fuel for the trip, the port operator in Paranaguá told Reuters.Food is not covered by U.S. sanctions, and Iran is one of the largest buyers of Brazil's agricultural commodities, importing more than 2.5 million tonnes of Brazilian corn so far this year — more than any other country.However, that trade is not usually carried by ships flying the Iranian flag.

Rolls-Royce Wins Order for MTU Engines in Brazil
Rolls-Royce said it has won an order to supply MTU engines for four new tugs for Aliança Navegação, a company owned by the Hamburg Süd shipping line. The shipping company uses 16-cylinder MTU Series 4000 propulsion systems throughout its Brazilian tugboat fleet consisting of seven harbor tugs, two of which are deployed in São Francisco in the north of Santa Catarina. The remaining five tugboats are still to undergo commissioning.All tugs are being built by Detroit Brasil Ltda.
Hamburg Süd, Electrolux partner for SO2 Reductions
Hamburg Süd and its Swedish customer Electrolux are teaming up to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in ports. During its layovers in Manzanillo, Mexico; Callao, Peru; and Iquique and Puerto Angamos, Chile. Between March 11 and 24, the 7,114 TEU containershp Santa Catarina voluntarily used cleaner marine gas oil (MGO) instead of standard heavy fuel oil (HFO) to operate its auxiliary engines and boilers. Hamburg Süd and Electrolux already carried out a fuel upgrade in the past, thereby making a contribution to environmental and health protection.
APM Terminals Wins South America Calls on New Asian Service
Direct services between Asia and the East Coast of South America will begin port calls at APM Terminals Buenos Aires, Argentina, and APM Terminals Itajaí, Brazil. The joint service deployed by Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, ZIM, Hyundai and Hamburg Sud prefers their vessels call APM Terminals' facilities in Itajai (Brazil) and T4 in Buenos Aires (Argentina). The weekly Asian service, operated jointly with 13 vessels from Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, Zim, Hamburg Süd and Hyundai, will call the Asian ports of Kelang, Singapore, Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Shekou and Busan.
Cobham Comms for Six Newbuild CBO OSVs
Companhia Brasileira de Offshore (CBO) has chosen Cobham SATCOM VSAT and Satellite TV (TVRO) antennas in addition to radio communication equipment for installation on six new Offshore Support Vessels (OSV). CBO’s state-of-the-art new OSVs have been commissioned to fulfil development contracts offshore Brazil and will be entering service during 2017 and 2018. The Cobham SATCOM equipment has been installed and is already supporting operations on the first of the new OSVs, with installation aboard the second vessel scheduled this month.
Huisman's Brazil Arm Delivers Its First Crane

Oceana Yard’s First Newbuild Delivered
The new Oceana shipyard in Itajai, Brazil has delivered its first newbuild, a platform supply vessel of the PX105 design from Ulstein Group. The vessel was delivered to shipowner Oceana Offshore on March 30, 2016, and on April 1, the vessel started on a six-year chart for Petrobras. Huisman officially opened its new production facility in Navegantes, Santa Catarina state, in the south of Brazil on Thursday, April 16. The facility is used for the manufacturing of offshore equipment for the Brazilian market. Access to Brazil's Itajai Port to Open as Truck Protest Ends
Protesters have agreed to open access to Brazil's main poultry exporting port of Itajai in Santa Catarina state, the port said on Wednesday, ending a lingering flashpoint after a two-week truck drivers' protest. A union of autonomous truck drivers agreed to the port's proposal to raise payments for transporters inside the port's grounds, the port said in a statement. The protests demanding lower diesel fuel prices and higher payments to cover freight costs were concentrated in southern Brazil in its final days, blocking meat exports and leaving some grocery stores with bare shelves. Brazil Truck Strike Diminishes
Some truck drivers in Brazil continued blocking roads on Tuesday, slowing grains deliveries to southern ports, even as adherence to the strike diminished and a key highway in top soy state Mato Grosso opened. Nationwide, there were 18 roadblocks over rising freight costs by the end of the day on Monday, well below peaks of more than 100 a week ago, federal highway police said. With the two-week-old protests concentrated in the south, however, the situation at No. 2 soy exporting port Paranagua remained critical, a spokesman said. On Monday just over 700 trucks arrived at the port, less than half the normal amount for this time of the year. With stocks running out, the port can only guarantee exports of soybeans and soymeal through Wednesday, the spokesman said.
Grupo CBO Selects Huisman Winch Packages
In January 2015, Huisman, the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, and Brazilian shipping company and shipyard group Grupo CBO, signed a contract for the delivery of four anchor handling and towing winch packages for four new Havyard 843 AHTS vessels. The winch packages will be built by Huisman’s new production facility in Navegantes, Brazil, and delivery is planned for 2016 and 2017. The winches will be delivered with 50% Brazilian content. The Havyard designed 843 AHTS vessels will be built by Estaleiro Aliança (2x) and Estaleiro Oceana (2x).
Aliança Christens New Containership
Yesterday, Hamburg Süd subsidiary Aliança christened its containership Pedro Álvares Cabral during a ceremony held for customers at the port of Itapoá. The ship’s Sponsor is Elisabeth von Krüger de Freitas, the wife of Humberto Ramos de Freitas, Executive Officer for Logistics and Mineral Exploration of Vale S.A., one of the most important clients of Aliança Bulk. Dr. Arnt Vespermann, Member of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd and Julian Thomas, General Manager Region South America East Coast of Hamburg Süd and Aliança, also participated in the ceremonies.
Brazilian Soybeans Sold to China Bound for US
Two Brazilian soybean cargoes sold by Japan's Marubeni Corp that were initially sold to China have been switched to the United States, according to port and shipping data updated on Tuesday, the latest of several U.S. import shipments expected this season. The vessels containing a total of 125,000 tonnes of the oilseed are scheduled to reach the United States next month. Importers in China, the world's top soybean buyer, have already defaulted on at least 500,000 tonnes of U.S. and Brazilian soybean cargoes worth around $300 million amid slowing demand and tightening credit in China. At least one of the cargoes was sold by Marubeni. Some cargoes initially purchased by Chinese importers have found new destinations in the United States and Europe.
World’s Largest Reefer Ship at HAROPA-Port du Havre
On March 27 and 28, HAROPA-Port du Havre accommodated the Cap San Lorenzo, a container vessel of 9,600 TEU delivered by Hyundai to the German shipping company Hamburg-Süd. Being the fourth of a series of six vessels of the Cap San class, the Cap San Lorenzo has a reefer capacity of 2,100 plugs on board and 9,600 TEU, which makes that the vessels are the biggest refrigerated containerships in the world. With a length of 333.2 meters, the Cap San Lorenzo has the particular feature of being proportionally very broad (48.2 meters).
Oceana Selects Ulstein’s PSV Designs
The Brazilian shipowning company Oceana Offshore will be building two platform supply vessels (PSV) with an option for two additional vessels based on the PX105 design from Ulstein. The vessels will be built at the new yard, Oceana Shipyard in Itajai, Brazil and are scheduled for delivery in April and May 2016, respectively. The vessels for Oceana are purposed for work in the Brazilian oil industry. The PX105 design is a large platform supply vessel with accommodation for 23 people. The vessels will be 88.9 meters long and 19 meters wide.
Huisman Brazil Receives First Order
Huisman, one of the worldwide specialist in lifting, drilling and subsea solutions, has received a first order for their new production facility in Brazil. The new order includes three sets of five cranes, which will be manufactured as soon as construction of the Brazilian production facility is completed in 2014. The sets of cranes are scheduled for delivery between Q3 2015 and Q1 2017. The order includes three identical sets of cranes for the new build vessels Cassino, Curumim and Salinas.

Local equipment suppliers reap dividends, but there’s room for foreign businesses – if they know how to play. After huge oil finds in recent years, Brazil's need for offshore vessels continues to expand and could double between now and the end of the decade. Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras wants to extract billions of barrels of oil while also developing its shipbuilding and service industries to create jobs. Meanwhile, Brazil is trying to use locally made vessels and equipment, but foreign companies are benefiting from the nation's oil bonanza too.
Hamburg Süd: Santa Catarina Christened
On Friday, September 16, 2011, Hamburg Süd christened the container ship Santa Catarina in Itapoá (Brazil) as part of a customer event. Sponsor of the Santa Catarina was Elisabeth Meves, wife of the former Chairman of the Executive Board of Hamburg Süd, Dr Klaus Meves. The “Santa Catarina” takes her name from the Brazilian Federal State in which the ship christening was held. With this choice of name the Hamburg Süd Group is underlining its close attachment to this region, which ranks among the shipping group’s most important export markets on South America’s east coast. Since its formation in 1871, Hamburg Süd has seen in Brazil a key partner for its business. The first ships at the time called at the ports in Rio and Santos.
Shipbuilding: Keppel Wins $113m in Brazilian Contracts
Keppel Singmarine Brasil (KSM Brasil), Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M)'s new 7.6-ha shipbuilding facility in the state of Santa Catarina, has secured two newbuild contracts worth about $113 million from fleet operators in Brazil. The first contract entails building a series of six 45-tonne bollard pull twin-screw Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) harbour tugboats, for REBRAS - Rebocadores do Brasil S.A. (SMIT Rebras).
