While conservatism is a hallmark of maritime, research from Inmarsat finds that IoT may be helping turn the tech tide by delivering new solutions that ease rather than complicate compliance.With environmental imperatives mounting, shipping’s hesitation concerning new technology has been laid bare in an Inmarsat Research Program report that includes data on how far the industry sees IoT-based solutions as a gateway to sustainability. Directly out the porthole is the IMO 2020 fuel sulfur cap, but further along is 2050 the target to cut GHG ship emissions by 2050.

Elcome Completes Satcom Switchover for LNG Tanker Fleet
Elcome International said it has completed a satellite communications retrofit program for a major fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers providing broadband data and voice services. “Our team decommissioned the existing VSAT systems and installed new SAILOR 900 antennas and below-deck systems on 40 ships within four months. Most of the installations were performed at sea, and the others were made at ports in eight different countries,” said Jimmy Grewal, executive director of Dubai-based Elcome International.
Campbell Shipping Migrates to Inmarsat Fleet Xpress
Inmarsat said it has reached an agreement with Campbell Shipping, a ship management company headquartered in Nassau, The Bahamas, to migrate its fleet of dry bulk carriers to Fleet Xpress. The commitment will involve a migration and upgrade from Inmarsat’s XpressLink services to Fleet Xpress, in a move to ensure ships managed by Campbell ships will continue to have the best satellite connectivity service available on the market, according to Capt. Space X Launches Fourth Set of Iridium NEXT Satellites
Iridium Communications announced that, SpaceX successfully launched the fourth set of 10 Iridium NEXT satellites into orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The launch marks the midway point of the Iridium NEXT launch program, and was the first Iridium launch to use a SpaceX flight-proven rocket. MODEC Connects Offshore Fleet with O3b/RigNet
O3b Networks, technology solutions company RigNet and floating production service provider MODEC, entered an agreement to provide high-throughput, low latency connectivity for MODEC’s Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels off the coast of Brazil. RigNet will integrate the O3b satellite network solution, enabling MODEC to deliver operational decisions in real-time through advanced collaborative environments. Experts at onshore monitoring centers can now work directly with offshore operators, using real-time information to make better and faster decisions, resulting in increased production and enhanced operating efficiency. Submarine Optical Fibre Cable to Link Andamans, Mainland India
India's government has decided to build a submarine cable between the city of Chennai and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which is about 200km east of India, way out in the Bay of Bengal. The estimated cost of the project, which is Rs 1,102.38 crore ($164,5 million) includes operational expenses for 5 years, and is likely to be completed by December 2018. The project would allow the implementation of e-governance initiatives; establishment of enterprises and e-commerce facilities in the islands.
Telenor's Ka-band to Service 200 Terminals
Telenor Satellite has announced that its Ka-band satellite capacity packages for land-based services in the Middle East have surpassed initial expectations, reaching more than 200 terminals within the first six months of commercial operation. Telenor Satellite commercially launched its iDirect land-based services for the Middle East and North Africa in Q4, 2015, via its new THOR 7 satellite. BIG DATA: First Intelsat EpicNG Satellite Launched
The launch yesterday of the Intelsat 29e, the first of the Intelsat EpicNG high throughput satellites, promises to usher in a new era of "Big Data" in the maritime sector, among others. The satellite was launched from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle. Manufactured by Boeing and equipped with advanced digital payload, Intelsat 29e will bring high throughput capacity in both C- and Ku-band to North and Latin America and the North Atlantic region. Intelsat 29e will be placed into service at 310° East, where it replaces Intelsat 1R.
Ericsson, Inmarsat to Streamline Supply Chain
Inmarsat and Ericsson have signed a strategic maritime agreement that is intended to facilitate the sharing of cargo, logistics and vessel operational data to help streamline the maritime supply chain. The two companies will jointly develop services, solutions and applications to drive industry standards for satellite connectivity and application integration in the maritime industry. As a first step, Ericsson has signed a distribution contract to offer XpressLink, Inmarsat’s combined L-band and Ku-band VSAT network for the maritime market. XpressLink offers an easy upgrade path to Inmarsat’s Fleet Xpress service, powered by the new Global Xpress constellation, when it becomes available in the coming months.
