P&O Ferries, MTN Transform Sea Travel Communications
P&O Ferries and MTN Communications (MTN) announce the delivery of high-performance Internet connectivity and access to online content through the first Wi-Fi hot spot on the English Channel. This service is now live on the English Channel on ferries serving the P&O Ferries Dover-Calais route. BIG DATA: First Intelsat EpicNG Satellite Launched
The launch yesterday of the Intelsat 29e, the first of the Intelsat EpicNG high throughput satellites, promises to usher in a new era of "Big Data" in the maritime sector, among others. The satellite was launched from French Guiana aboard an Ariane 5 vehicle. Manufactured by Boeing and equipped with advanced digital payload, Intelsat 29e will bring high throughput capacity in both C- and Ku-band to North and Latin America and the North Atlantic region. Intelsat 29e will be placed into service at 310° East, where it replaces Intelsat 1R.

Inmarsat Type Approval for 9502 BGAN M2M Terminal
Inmarsat said that that it has expanded its Machine-to-Machine (M2M) portfolio by type approving the Hughes 9450-C11 terminal, the first mobile BGAN M2M-enabled terminal. Heavy-lift specialist is first customer to sign up for new flat-rate global coverage VSAT service package. Globecomm Systems Inc., a global provider of communications solutions and services, announced today that Global Seatrade, a unit of the Hartman Marine Group, has awarded it a contract for unified maritime communications. Services will be provided by Mach6, a unit of Globecomm Maritime, using its global VSAT platform, which provides automatic roaming between Ku-band satellite beams on a global basis at a flat rate. The contract was awarded in October.

Submarine Optical Fibre Cable to Link Andamans, Mainland India
India's government has decided to build a submarine cable between the city of Chennai and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, which is about 200km east of India, way out in the Bay of Bengal. The estimated cost of the project, which is Rs 1,102.38 crore ($164,5 million) includes operational expenses for 5 years, and is likely to be completed by December 2018. The project would allow the implementation of e-governance initiatives; establishment of enterprises and e-commerce facilities in the islands.

Ericsson, Inmarsat to Streamline Supply Chain
Inmarsat and Ericsson have signed a strategic maritime agreement that is intended to facilitate the sharing of cargo, logistics and vessel operational data to help streamline the maritime supply chain. The two companies will jointly develop services, solutions and applications to drive industry standards for satellite connectivity and application integration in the maritime industry. As a first step, Ericsson has signed a distribution contract to offer XpressLink, Inmarsat’s combined L-band and Ku-band VSAT network for the maritime market. Enhanced Satellite Connectivity in Papua New Guinea
Global satellite communications service provider SpeedCast International Limited has entered into an agreement with O3b Networks, where O3b will provide capacity for Papua New Guinea via its Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite constellation. The O3b-based service will allow SpeedCast to deliver high throughput and low latency internet services to local customers. SpeedCast’s high bandwidth new IP Trunk from Port Moresby to the international Internet backbone will enable high throughput voice and data services, whose performance will be similar to or even exceed that of traditional fiber connectivity, SpeedCast said. O3b’s MEO configuration provides low latency in satellite communications of less than 150 milliseconds.
