Sea Machines Opens Office in Hamburg

Boston-based developer of autonomous vessel technology Sea Machines Robotics announced it will open an office in Hamburg, Germany in a move aimed at better access to European-based customers, innovators and investors. The company said its second office will provide convenient access to several key locations and will support growing demand for engineering, sales and marketing across Europe. Sea Machines founder and CEO Michael Johnson said the company is growing as demand for autonomous technology is increasing.

BBC Chartering Opens in Beijing

BBC Chartering announces the opening of a new representative office in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, starting immediately. “We are responding to the increased activity for project and heavy lift shipping services from Asia and on intra-Asia trades,” said Svend Andersen, CEO of BBC Chartering. “Beijing is an important hub for project, breakbulk, and general cargo customers who ask for higher levels of shipping performance and more project related trading possibilities. Volvo Penta allows operators to save on fuel, cut emissions and most importantly – get the job done, in a wide array of conditions and mission sets. Volvo Penta of the Americas is delivering fuel efficiency, reducing emissions and raising performance as it powers U.S. and Canadian vessels with modern diesel engines, Jens Bering, product management head of the Virginia-based operation said last month. The company, a supplier of marine and industrial engines, is part of Volvo Group in Stockholm, Sweden.

EFC Looks to Recruit 50 Staff in Highlands

EFC Group, a leading designer and manufacturer of instrumentation, monitoring, handling and control systems for the global oil and gas industry, has announced plans to recruit up to 50 people in the Highlands as part of its rapid expansion in the area. The recruitment drive follows an acceleration of EFC’s growth strategy in Forres, with the launch of a second base in Enterprise Park in May this year representing a £100,000 investment by the firm. A satellite office was previously opened in the same business park in September 2012.

EFC Group Launches Next Phase of NE Scotland Expansion

EFC Group, a designer and manufacturer of instrumentation, monitoring, handling and control systems for the global oil and gas industry, announced the launch of a new manufacturing plant in Moray. The base in Enterprise Park, Forres marks the Group’s second phase of expansion in the area and a £100,000 investment. This follows the opening of a new satellite office in the same business park in September 2012. The new 4,000-square-foot plant has been opened six months ahead of schedule, demonstrating how EFC Group is driving forward its aggressive growth strategy.

Towboat Sinks, Blocks Matagorda Ship Channel

The 32-ft. tow boat Iron Ox sank April 4 during a storm in the Matagorda Ship Channel. The storm's winds averaged 40 to 50 knots with gusts up to 60. No one was hurt and pollution is minimal, but the wreckage is blocking the ship channel. The Matagorda Ship Channel is the only access for large ships to the port of Point Comfort, Texas. Presently there are four ships awaiting transit. Investigators from U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Satellite Office Port Lavaca, Texas, are overseeing salvage operations and investigating the cause of the sinking. The Iron Ox sank while still attached by cable to the dredge it was tending, between channel markers 43 and 44, near Magnolia, Texas. The tow cable and heavy seas from the storm are slowing salvage operations.

Coast Guard Rescues Three from Sinking Tug

A boat crew from Coast Guard Station Port O'Connor rescued three men off the sinking tug, Charles Alfred, May 27 in San Antonio Bay, approximately six miles south of Seadrift, Texas.The crew of the Charles Alfred contacted the Coast Guard at 9:25 p.m. and reported that they were sinking. Two boat crews from Station Port O'Connor, Texas, and a helicopter crew from Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas, responded. The three crewmembers were safely rescued from the tug and taken to Station Port O'Conner.The Charles Alfred was towing a barge, carrying 9,700 barrels of cyclohexane, alongside when it began to sink. The barge is keeping the tug from completely sinking. Both are in shallow water and are not blocking any ship traffic.

O’Neill Joins Knight & Carver

Knight & Carver YachtCenter has announced that Katherine (Kate) O'Neill has joined the company’s staff as a sales representative based in its Shelter Island (San Diego) satellite office. A native of Australia, O’Neill brings first-hand knowledge and experience in the yacht and charter cruising industries to Knight & Carver. Most recently, she owned and operated Sailing Tours.com, based in Zihuatanejo, Mexico, aboard the 65 ft. cutter "Nirvana." For the past four years, she coordinated private sailing tours aboard the vessel through an arrangement with Club Med Ixtapa and various five-star resorts in the region. Prior to that, O’Neill traveled the western coastal waters of the U.S. and Mexico aboard “Nirvana” for more than a year.

Aker Kvaerner to Create New Jobs on Teesside

Aker Kvaerner Offshore Partner, headquartered in Aberdeen, is to open a satellite office in Stockton-on-Tees, UK. The office will be responsible for a range of upstream oil and gas projects, and modification work. The office is located within the existing Aker Kvaerner premises at Ashmore House, Stockton-on-Tees and will be operational from January 2006. "In addition to servicing work arising from current and future clients, Aker Kvaerner intends to develop the office as a center of engineering excellence to execute cross-border work for our Norwegian sister companies and clients," said Richard Strachan, operations director with Aker Kvaerner Offshore Partner Ltd. Based in Stockton for more than 100 years, Aker Kvaerner has a long-standing commitment to the Teesside area.
