Cruise lines are increasingly using technology to attract and entertain passengers. Whether it’s media content to help travelers wind down at the end of the day or smart tech meant to improve the overall cruise experience, cruise ships are becoming more high-tech. Being out on the ocean creates some challenges to accessing technology, which has put cruise ships behind land-based attractions in terms of digital attractions. gplink Approved in More than 30 Countries

Remote monitoring and diagnostic services provided by gplink operate through either GSM service or through various satellite technologies. On a global scale, most countries have their own rules and regulations to follow for communications and radio frequency use. In order to sell in specific countries, gplink must first be reviewed and certified by that country’s communication commission or department. gplink said it has been working to be certified in dozens of countries throughout the world and announced that Peru is now online for gplink services, both GSM and satellite.

Telaurus Appoints Davison As Product Manager

Telaurus Communications, a Globecomm Maritime company, has appointed Geoff Davison as Product Manager – Value Added Services. Geoff joins Telaurus with 20 years’ experience in electronics, telecommunications and information technology in the marine, military and avionics markets. For the last 10 years Geoff has held a senior position with AND Group, leading its technical support team for the last five years. E.R. Schiffahrt Selects Globe iFusion for Nearly 90 Ships

Globe Wireless announced E.R. Schiffahrt of Hamburg, Germany will install the Globe iFusion solution on nearly 90 vessels. Roland Felbinger, Nautical Senior Superintendent, of E.R. Schiffahrt commented, “Our corporate IT strategy is to utilize IP satellite technologies to improve our ability to remotely support shipboard IT systems, and lowering cost for growing traffic. Our evaluation showed that with most stand-alone terminals it would be necessary to install several other IT components. The Globe iFusion system was recently awarded the Inmarsat 2010 Maritime Solution of the Year award.

Stennis Employs All-digital Helm

Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) successfully tested and operated a state-of-the-art, touch screen digital helm and lee helm during a series of sea trials that began Dec. 12. The installation of this latest navigation technology is part of an extensive, shipwide systems upgrade and ship restoration project conducted during a Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, 10 years after the ship was commissioned in December 1995. The ship has been in the shipyard for almost a year, undergoing the massive renovation project making the ship, as officials say, the most advanced carrier in the fleet.

Northrop Grumman, TRW Continue Discussions

Northrop Grumman Corporation and TRW Inc. are continuing to have discussions with the Department of Justice relating to their proposed merger and continue to believe that a mutually acceptable consent decree can be reached within the next several days. Every effort will be made, the parties said, to complete their pending merger promptly following shareholder approval of the merger at meetings on Dec. 11, 2002. The companies agreed with the Justice Department, however, that in the event the consent decree is not finalized by Dec. 9, 2002, they will not close the merger until the consent decree is finalized or until Dec. 16, 2002, whichever is earlier.
