Inmarsat Signs MOU with Hellenic Space Agency

Satellite communications provider Inmarsat has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Hellenic Space Agency (HSA) to allow greater collaboration on research and potential technology development.The agreement, which will include a focus on satellite projects related to the Internet of Things (IoT) and the maritime sector, was signed this week at the international shipping event Posidonia 2018 in Athens by Inmarsat’s Maritime President Ronald Spithout and Christodoulos Protopapas…

Iridium Approves WCC Comms Solutions

World Communication Center (WCC), a provider of worldwide satellite voice and data communications, announced that its MariTrack SSAS and ComCenter solutions have been approved for commercial sale by Iridium. Manufactured by Applied Satellite Engineering (ASE), WCC’s turnkey solutions provide industry leading product functionalities: online security and encryption, Ontec’s permission-based software features, Iridium’s global satellite technology and WCC’s 24 x 7 live customer support. According to Don Thoma, executive vice president, Iridium Satellite LLC, "The MariTrack and ComCenter solutions passed our rigorous testing and work seamlessly on Iridium's satellite network.

Advances in Sea-State Forecasting

Marine operations such as offshore oil and gas operations, renewable energy projects and shipping depend on high quality information on sea-state (wave height, period, direction, steepness) for economic and safety decision making. The information currently available is based on atmospheric/ocean models and lacks sufficient temporal and spatial resolution. “Wave conditions are always changing and can vary tremendously over a period of a few hours”, said Chelsea’s Technical Manager, Paul Bolton.

Farstad Orders Unique Wave-Piercing Offshore Vessel

Rolls-Royce received from Farstad Shipping the first order for its new wave-piercing offshore vessel. The bow design will reportedly enable the vessel to pierce through waves in extreme weather conditions, while maintaining constant speed, reducing fuel consumption and enhancing safety. The contract, worth in excess of &19.1 to Rolls-Royce, includes vessel design and a comprehensive integrated power and propulsion system and equipment package for an advanced platform supply vessel (PSV). The contract also includes an option for a second vessel of the same specification and value.

Chellsea Expands PSV Order from COSCO, Rolls-Royce

COSCO Shipyard Group announced that it has been awarded options by the Singapore-based Chellsea Group for the construction of four platform supply vessels designed by Rolls-Royce. With this contract, COSCO has ordered integrated design and equipment packages for a total of eight Rolls-Royce UT 771 WP platform supply vessels, with an option for further two. The first four are currently under construction, while the subsequent four are scheduled for delivery between the second quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. All eight vessels will be added to the fleet of two UT 755 LN vessels that are already in operation with Chellsea.

COSCO Shipyard Group has announced that it has been awarded options by the Singapore-based Chellsea Group for the construction of four platform supply vessels designed by Rolls-Royce. With this contract, COSCO has ordered integrated design and equipment packages for a total of eight Rolls-Royce UT 771 WP platform supply vessels, with an option for further two. The first four are currently under construction, while the subsequent four are scheduled for delivery between the second quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017.

Secretary Slater Switches On Satellite Navigational and Positioning Systems

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater and South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson joined with Admiral James M. Loy, Commandant of the USCG, to officially switch on the latest satellite-based positioning technology, a federally required system that will benefit all 50 states as well as private industry. The ceremony marked the official availability of the Maritime Differential Global Positioning System (MDGPS) and its expansion into the Nationwide Differential Global Positioning System (NDGPS), which will extend the technology's benefits to all modes of the nation's transportation systems. The Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) provides a significant advance in the application of satellite technology.

Company Introduces Revolutionary Technology

VISTAR Datacom, a new entrant into the North American telecommunications market will deliver end-to-end, satellite-based communications services throughout North America for asset management, monitoring and tracking. The asset management system provides real-time asset monitoring and tracking for businesses with mobile and remote assets, including boats. The power-efficient satellite technology at the heart of the GlobalWave system allows compact radio terminals, including GPS, to operate reliably and unattended for years without servicing at a much lower cost than any comparable technology on the market. VISTAR Datacom will market Global Wave both directly and through a network of distribution partners.

Inmarsat FleetBroadband Moves Towards IMO GMDSS Nod

The role of Inmarsat as sole provider of satellite technology performing to Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) standards is set for advancement, after an IMO Sub Committee decided to greenlight consideration of both FleetBroadband and Fleet One for formal approval. To date, Inmarsat is the only company which has received approval from the International Maritime Organization to provide the GMDSS data and messaging communications on which mariners rely in the last resort, currently via Inmarsat C and Fleet 77 services.

MTN Collaborates with Xantic

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), of Miramar, Fla., has signed a cooperative agreement with Xantic. Under the agreement, financial terms of which were not disclosed, Xantic will market and distribute MTN’s VSAT services to the global maritime markets. It will also provide teleport services to MTN at Burum (Netherlands) to add to MTN's existing teleport infrastructure and to add C- and Ku-Band services in the North Sea, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean regions. “This agreement offers MTN the ability to expand our global product and services using Xantic’s excellent facilities at Burum while expanding our sales and distribution capabilities through Xantic’s network of 35 offices worldwide,” said Bradford Briggs, Senior Vice President of MTN.

Island Offshore Chooses Rolls-Royce Propulsion Systems

Rolls-Royce recently won a £20 million (over $32.5 million) order to design and supply power and propulsion systems for two UT 776 CD supply vessels for Island Offshore. Island Offshore were the first to introduce the UT 776 CD ship, which is designed to transport supplies to and from offshore oil and gas platforms. These vessels are the ninth and tenth ordered by the operator to date. In addition to the ship design, the order includes a fully-integrated diesel-electric power and propulsion system, featuring four Rolls-Royce Bergen engines, to power two Azipull thrusters.

MTN Signs Deal with Oceania

Maritime Telecommunications Network (MTN), of Miramar, Florida, a provider of satellite-based communications, networking and other services to the cruise and offshore oil and gas industries, has signed a three-year lease agreement with Oceania Cruises to install MTN’s advanced satellite technology aboard the luxury vessels Regatta and Insignia. With MTN’s state-of-the-art satellite communication system and services, Oceania Cruises will add fully integrated global connectivity capabilities to its list of guest amenities. MTN’s VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) equipment and superior service will enable passengers and crew aboard the Regatta and Insignia to enjoy reliable telecommunications from even the most remote locations…

Rolls-Royce to Power High-tech Drillships

Rolls-Royce awarded contracts worth over £70-million to supply large thrusters for offshore drilling vessels. These latest orders, which include options for additional thrusters, are from a variety of customers who are expanding their drillship fleets and are driven by greater demand in oil and gas exploration in deep water and harsh conditions. These high specification drillships operate in dynamic positioning (DP) mode, using satellite technology to automatically maintain position without anchoring. This places a heavy responsibility on thruster performance and reliability.

MODEC Connects Offshore Fleet with O3b/RigNet

O3b Networks, technology solutions company RigNet and floating production service provider MODEC, entered an agreement to provide high-throughput, low latency connectivity for MODEC’s Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels off the coast of Brazil. RigNet will integrate the O3b satellite network solution, enabling MODEC to deliver operational decisions in real-time through advanced collaborative environments. Experts at onshore monitoring centers can now work directly with offshore operators, using real-time information to make better and faster decisions, resulting in increased production and enhanced operating efficiency. Rolls Royce Gets COSCO Multiple OSV Contract

Rolls-Royce contracted to provide integrated design, power & propulsion & equipment package for four Rolls-Royce UT 771 CDL offshore supply vessels. Rolls Royce's  £26 million order is for vessels to be built at COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co. Ltd, in China for a Hong Kong owner. The contract includes options for four additional vessels. This contract is the first time Rolls-Royce has incorporated high speed MTU-engines as part of an integrated power and propulsion package within the successful UT-vessel series.

Tognum to supply 16 marine gensets with MTU Series 4000 engines as part of Rolls-Royce UT-OSV design for 4 new CDL OSV's. Tognum will deliver 16 MTU marine generator sets with 12V 4000 M23S Ironmen engines for four Rolls-Royce UT 771 CDL offshore supply vessels (OSV) to be built at COSCO (Zhoushan) Shipyard Co. Ltd. in China. The gensets are part of a £26 million Rolls-Royce order to provide an integrated design, power and propulsion and equipment package. COSCO will build the OSVs for a Hong Kong owner. The four vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2014.

US EPA awards Blue Water Satellite contract to providie satellite data for an epidemiological study of 4 beaches. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded a contract to Blue Water Satellite of Bowling Green, OH to provide unique historical data regarding the concentrations of potentially harmful Cyanobacteria, Chlorophyll-a, and Phosphorus at four Great Lakes beaches. This historical data will be used as part of an epidemiological study to potentially correlate concentrations of various biological constituents with human health effects.

Galileo Navigation Satellite Project Update

Europe’s latest Galileo navigation satellite has arrived at the European Space Agency’s (ESA) technical centre in the Netherlands for testing, as the previous two satellites are prepared for shipping to French Guiana for launch this summer.
