Leatherman Sr. Terminal, a new container terminal along the Cooper River, which will open in March 2021.S.C. More than 300 people — contractors, port employees, elected leaders and community members — cheered as a steel beam and tree were placed atop the steel structure as part of a traditional “topping out” ceremony.The 34,853-square-foot building, built by Samet Corp., will have offices, meeting spaces, crane operator rest and training areas, and a full-service kitchen, as well as the backup power required to maintain critical infrastructure in the event of a power outage.Sen. US President Donald Trump approved $138 million for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project as part of the Energy and Water Appropriations Bill in the 2020 Budget.According to a statement from South Carolina Ports Authority, both the Senate and the House voted to approve the appropriations bill this week as part of the fiscal year 2020 funding package, and Trump signed it into law Friday."This enormous step forward means the project is fully funded to completion and on track to achieve a 52-foot depth in 2021," it said.S.C. South Carolina Ports Authority (SC Ports) reported a stellar performance in the first four months of the fiscal year backed by strong volumes in both containerized and vehicular cargo.S.C. Ports moved 217,360 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs) across the Wando Welchopens in a new window and North Charlestonopens in a new window container terminals in October. SCPA has moved 855,959 TEUs since July, a 7% increase year-over-year.As measured by the total number of boxes handled, SCPA moved 122,591 pier containers in October for a total of 484,549 pier containers in fiscal 2020, up nearly 7% from a year ago.S.C. The South Carolina Ports Authority announced plans to pursue a second inland port facility, driven by the success of Inland Port Greer and demand for enhanced efficiency of international container movements between the Port of Charleston and growing markets in South Carolina and North Carolina. "Inland Port Greer is one of SCPA's most successful investments, as the growth of intermodal container volume movement in our state and region requires appropriate facilities in the interior to ground loaded and empty containers and to leverage the efficiency and sustainability of rail transportation," SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome said. "If it is feasible, an additional inland port will be a great diversification of our logistics footprint.

Today SC Ports Authority reported 2015 fiscal year-end operating earnings of $30.4 million and revenues of $196.8 million, significant increases over the previous year's financial performance. From July through June, SCPA more than doubled its previous fiscal year's operating earnings of $14.3 million, while operating revenues increased 20 percent over FY2014 revenues of $32.6 million. Container volumes increased 14 percent during SC Ports Authority's (SCPA) 2015 fiscal year, building upon several previous years of above-market growth with strength across all business segments, SCPA announced. "2015 was a memorable year for SC Ports Authority," said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome. "We reached near-record levels of containerized cargo and saw strong volume and good diversification of the breakbulk sector. SCPA handled 1.9 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) during the fiscal year that ended June 30, a jump of 231,473 TEUs from the 2014 fiscal year.

Charleston Harbor deepening project earns key federal funding for preconstruction engineering and design; U.S. Today SC Ports Authority announced $1.303 million in federal funding for the Post-45 Harbor deepening project, allowing the preconstruction engineering and design (PED) phase of the 52-foot deepening effort to begin. The announcement follows last week's U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works Review Board (CWRB) approval to release the project's Final Integrated Feasibility Report and Environmental Impact Statement for final review, another critical step of federal approval for the S.C. Port Authority to provide the deepest harbor on the East Coast. "The allocation of federal funding for the PED phase of our deepening project is tremendous," said SCPA Board Chairman Bill Stern.

The Jasper Ocean Terminal (JOT) board of directors met earlier this week to solidify a budget and work plan for FY2016 as well as review work completed during the 2015 fiscal year. The board approved a 2016 fiscal year budget that includes accomplishing further studies of the site design, sediment, access corridor and channel improvements necessary for the largest containerships, as well as efforts to recruit a third party required for completion of an environmental impact study. Cosponsors Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and SC Ports Authority (SCPA) will each contribute $1.25 million to the FY2016 budget. “This was a watershed meeting for our board,” said board chairman David Posek.

SC Ports Authority sustained double-digit container volume gains in March, reporting 14.3 percent fiscal year to date growth of twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) over the same period last year. In March SCPA handled 171,113 TEUs, an increase of 13.7 percent compared to 150,516 TEUs moved during the same month last year. Fiscal year to date, the port has handled nearly 1.4 million TEUs. As measured in pier containers, or the total number of boxes handled, containerized cargo is up 15 percent fiscal year to date compared to last year. SCPA moved 97,191 boxes in March, bringing year fiscal to date pier container volume to nearly 798,000 boxes.

February marked the second consecutive month of 18 percent container growth at the SC Ports Authority, bringing fiscal year container volumes totals to 1.23 million twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs. Last month Charleston handled 152,925 TEUs, a significant increase from 129,747 handled during the same month last year. Since the fiscal year began in July, the port's TEU volume is 14.3 percent higher than the same period last fiscal year. As measured in pier containers, SCPA moved 86,258 boxes in February.

The SC Ports Authority handled 152,917 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, in January, marking an 18 percent boost in container volumes over the same month last year. January container traffic pushed fiscal year to date TEU volumes past the 1 million mark, with 1,072,438 TEUs moved since the period began in July. Fiscal year to date, TEU volumes are up 14 percent year over year. As measured in pier containers, SCPA moved 88,619 boxes in January. With 614,372 boxes handled fiscal year to date, pier container levels are up 15 percent compared to the same period last year.

SC Ports Authority recently handled one of its heaviest energy project moves to date, a 1.5 million pound Westinghouse Electric Company steam generator for the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company nuclear power plant expansion near Columbia, SC. The generator was off-loaded from the BBC AQUAMARINE directly onto a Schnabel car, a specialty railcar designed to transport heavy and oversized loads. The 36-axle railcar, among the largest of its type in the world, transported the equipment from Charleston to the V.C. The South Carolina Ports Authority, Lowcountry Open Land Trust, Coastal Conservation League and the Southern Environmental Law Center announced a milestone agreement for the Post-45 Harbor Deepening Project that includes a port contribution to land conservation efforts along the Cooper River Corridor. SC Ports Authority (SCPA) is partnering with Lowcountry Open Land Trust (LOLT), Coastal Conservation League (CCL) and the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) to form a new collaboration that invests in the conservation of the Cooper River Corridor and ensures the timely progress forward of harbor deepening. The SC Ports Authority announced another month of double-digit container growth, with fiscal year-to-date volumes up 13 percent year over year. The port handled 144,218 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in November, an increase of 8 percent over the same month last year. Fiscal year to date TEU volumes are 11 percent ahead of plan, with 777,566 TEUs handled since July. As measured in pier containers, SCPA handled 82,466 boxes last month, an increase of 10 percent over November 2013 volumes. The SC Ports Authority today received the first ship call of a new consolidated East Coast South America service that brings additional post-Panamax vessels to Charleston. The newly-formed "New Tango" weekly service includes Hamburg Süd/Aliança, Hapag-Lloyd/CSAV, as well as two carriers new to this trade in the Port of Charleston, NYK and Yang Ming. SC Ports Authority reported 2014 fiscal year-end operating earnings of $14.3 million, 20.7 percent over the organization's financial plan. SC Ports Authority reported container volumes up 13 percent fiscal year to date, a strong start to the first two months of the fiscal calendar. The SCPA handled 163,970 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August, in increase from 144,649 TEUs moved during the same month last year and 153,916 handled in July. Fiscal year to date, SCPA container volume is 12.2 percent ahead of plan. As measured in pier containers, July and August volumes are up 13.5 percent year over year. SCPA moved 93,221 boxes in August for a total of 181,103 pier containers to date in FY2015. In non-containerized cargo, Charleston breakbulk tonnage is on plan with 134,105 tons handled in August. Georgetown saw a strong month, with fiscal year to date volumes up 6.6 percent over the same period last year.

Today SC Ports Authority announced 13 percent year-over-year increases in container volume through the first quarter of the 2015 fiscal year. SCPA handled 150,790 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in September, up 13.4 percent over the same month in 2013. Container volumes are 10.3 percent ahead of plan for the fiscal year, which began in July. From a calendar year perspective, TEUs  are up 11.5 percent over 2013 levels. Charleston breakbulk cargo volumes were also strong in September, with 65,214 pier tons handled during the month.

The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly passed the Omnibus appropriations bill, allowing key SC Ports Authority projects to proceed, says the Ports Authority. The bill was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives with support of five members of the South Carolina delegation, and it now goes to the President's desk for signature. The bill includes funding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to continue its Feasibility Study of the Post-45 Harbor Deepening project, which expects to receive its Chief's Report in September 2015…

Today Dupuy Storage and Forwarding, LLC opens its newest coffee warehouse and handling facility in North Charleston to serve the rising levels of imported coffee beans through the SC Ports Authority. Coffee volumes at the Port of Charleston are up 60 percent over the last two years, due largely to demand by U.S. coffee roasters and consumption by the Southeast's growing population. "Coffee is a highly specialized type of cargo, and SC Ports welcomes Dupuy's newest coffee warehouse to Charleston," said SCPA president and CEO Jim Newsome. Both Arabica and Robusta beans are imported through the SCPA from coffee growers primarily in Latin America and Africa. Beans imported in Charleston are distributed throughout the Southeast and Gulf Coast.
