More than three years after completing the first outline sketches, Spanish naval design and architecture firm Oliver Design has completed outfitting the interiors for the Bima Suci, the Indonesian navy’s new sail training ship. This spectacular vessels is one of the largest tall ships in the world and measures 364 x 44 ft. with a 14.8 ft. draft. Plastics in the Ocean
Aboard the SSV Robert C. Seamans last November, 1,500 miles from land, 38 researchers from Sea Education Association (SEA) studied a Brobdingnagian swath of Pacific Ocean that has become the temporary resting spot for thousands of tons of plastic. Commonly called the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” the area has attracted significant media attention in the last decade but a surprising dearth of scientific attention. Contrary to popular opinion, the “Patch” is not a continuous field of debris, is not visible from space, nor is it an “island of trash.” But it’s there.
Mystic Seaport Awarded NEH Grant
The Frank C. Munson Institute of American Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport has been awarded a “We the People” grant of $166,094 from the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH). The grant will support “The American Maritime People,” a six-week college and university teacher institute for 25 participants on American maritime history from the colonial era to the present. As the third NEH Institute offered at Munson, the 2010 course will build on the latest research in studies of the sea, providing teachers with the opportunity to enhance course offerings by studying the influence of maritime activities on U.S. history and culture.
Corso Named Deputy Assistant Administrator for Ocean Service
William Corso has been appointed as the new deputy assistant administrator for NOAA's National Ocean Service. Corso will officially assume his duties on November 20. Corso has spent the past seven years working for Lockheed Martin. Currently, he directs the diversified projects group at Stennis Space Center, Bay St. Louis, Miss. He is responsible for cost, schedule, and technical performance of programs supporting government agencies at the Center, including software development in support of naval oceanographic operations worldwide and contributions to the conceptual design of the Integrated Ocean Observing System. Michael Carthew, President, Chevron Texaco Shipping and Dean Taylor, President and CEO, Tidewater Marine were elected to the ABS Board of Directors, by the ABS Council, following yesterday's Annual Members Meeting of the classification society in New York. General Dynamics announced the appointment of John F. "Dugan" Shipway, 60, as president of Bath Iron Works, reporting to Michael W. Toner, executive vice president of General Dynamics Marine Systems group. Shipway succeeds Allan C. Cameron, 57, who has announced his retirement. Cameron had been president of Bath Iron Works since 1996. Edwin W. Stephan, a founder and former longtime president and vice chairman of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., will retire from the Board of Directors following the company's May 20 annual meeting in Miami.
SEA Appoints Joyce as Dean
Sea Education Association has named Dr. Paul Joyce as its new Dean. Dr. Joyce, who has been affiliated with Sea for most of his professional life, most recently serving as the organization’s assistant dean for Pacific Operations and acting dean. Joyce obtained a BS and Ma from the University of Notre Dame, and went on to earn his Doctorate in Biological Oceanography from the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island.
