V.Ships Manages REV Ocean Expedition Ship

Norwegian ocean research organization REV Ocean has appointed V.Ships Leisure as ship management partner for the world’s largest research and expedition vessel.V.Ships Leisure, part of V.Group, will provide a tailored suite of ship management services for the new vessel, which is scheduled for completion in 2021. New Floating Dry Dock for Marisco in Hawaii

A new concrete floating dry dock has been launched by Singapore marine engineering company GL Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd (GL E&C). Built in Batam, Indonesia with a local subcontractor, the $12 million dry dock named Peleke Nui has been commissioned by an American company, Marisco Limited. for the construction, maintenance as well as repair of ships and naval crafts, serving international clients from the owner’s base in Hawaii. Southeast Asia's Largest Concrete Floating Dry Dock Launched

Southeast Asia’s largest concrete floating dry dock has been launched by Singapore’s marine engineering company, GL Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd (GL E&C). Built in Batam, Indonesia with a local sub-contractor, the dry dock named ‘Peleke Nui’ has been specially commissioned by an American company, Marisco Limited. Costing $12 million, the dry dock will be used for the construction, maintenance as well as repair of ships and naval crafts, serving international clients from the owner’s base in Hawaii, the United States of America.

Long Beach Port Acquires 125 Acres for Cargo Ops

U.S. Navy, Maritime Administration and California Environmental Protection Agency representatives joined City and Port officials today to commemorate the approval to transfer ownership of 125 acres of the former Naval Complex to the City of Long Beach. The property transfer commemoration highlighted the economic success of a thriving shipping terminal and other operations at the former Navy facility. Today, the Pier T container terminal is one of the Port of Long Beach’s busiest — able to accommodate megaships and handling billions of dollars’ worth of trade. Long Beach Cargo Operations Resume

The Port of Long Beach resumed full cargo-handling operations Thursday, Aug. 28, after a lessening of storm surges from Hurricane Marie that had battered south-facing piers and interrupted the loading and unloading of four vessels a day earlier. With swells down to 8 to 10 feet, from a peak of 15 feet or more on Wednesday, Total Terminals International on Pier T went back to work on two Mediterranean Shipping Co. container ships. Crescent Terminal on Pier F also resumed the unloading of Mercedes-Benz automobiles and wind towers from two vessels.

Storm Surge Halts Vessel Operations at Long Beach

Two cargo terminals at the Port of Long Beach announced Wednesday, Aug. 27, that they were suspending vessel operations for the day because 10- to 15-foot high wave surges powered by Pacific Hurricane Marie endangered longshore workers. Total Terminals International on Pier T, with two Mediterranean Shipping Co. container ships at berth, and Crescent Terminals on Pier F, with two break-bulk ships including a MOL roll-on, roll-off vessel at berth, stopped working the ships late Tuesday. There was flooding reported at Crescent.

Strategic Marine Delivers MV Thaiyak

Specialist shipbuilder Strategic Marine has delivered the On-Station vessel Thaiyak to the Australian Customs & Border Protection Service (ACBPS). Intelsat 27 Launch Unsuccessful

Intelsat S.A., the world's leading provider of satellite services, has announced  that at 1:57 a.m. EST, the launch of the Intelsat 27 satellite failed approximately 40 seconds after liftoff. A Zenit 3SL launch vehicle was carrying the satellite built by Boeing. Intelsat 27 was to operate from 304.5º East, an orbital location currently occupied by Intelsat 805 and Galaxy 11. The satellite was designed to serve customers in North America, South America, the North Atlantic and Europe. Sea Launch will establish a Failure Review Oversight Board to determine the cause of the failure. Service to customers on Intelsat 805 and Galaxy 11 will not be interrupted as a result of today's event.

Shipowners are known for having distinct differences of opinion, but the one thing that all agree on is the importance of having access to capital. In an industry in which assets are generally big-ticket items and operating margins can be thin, access to proper financing serves the dual purposes of fleet growing the generation of healthy operating returns. Most shipowners would also agree that financing for maritime assets generally isn't easy to find. There are various reasons for this. One reason is that few lenders focus exclusively on marine finance and a result most lending institutions are not familiar enough with marine assets to feel comfortable financing them.

The world's marine insurers collectively lost $3 billion in 1999, Norway's Central Union of Marine Underwriters (CEFOR) said. Cefor's calculation uses the collective experience of marine insurers in Norway - one of the world's major marine insurance markets - and extrapolates the results to the global industry. Cefor's md said that not even in their previous worst case estimates did CEFOR anticipate anything like this. The principal reason for the losses is continuing reduction in insurance premium rates, said Formso. On CEFOR's current estimates, rates in 2000 have dropped to 31 per cent of their 1994 levels. Sea Launch Leaves Victoria Shipyards

Repair Job Underway at Victoria Shipyard

The Times Colonist reported that repairs started at Victoria Shipyards on a platform used to propel commercial satellites into orbit. The Odyssey Launch Platform is undergoing repairs after a failed mission damaged the vessel in January after 20 consecutive successful launches. The platform, which is 436.6 ft. long or almost one and a half football fields in length, is owned by Sea Launch, an international partnership of four American, Russian, Ukrainian and Norwegian businesses, including Boeing.
