Sea Star Line, TOTE Leadership Changes

Effective January 1, 2014, Sea Star Line (SSL) President Peter Keller will become Executive Vice President of Sea Star Line’s parent company, TOTE, Inc. In this new capacity he will assist in the oversight of both TOTE Shipholdings and the TOTE Maritime Division, which includes Sea Star Line and Totem Ocean Trailer Express (Totem Ocean). Keller joined TOTE in February of 2012 as President of Sea Star Line and has been leading the conversion of the company’s fleet to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).

Sea Star Receives New Refrigerated Containers

Sea Star Line, LLC recently took delivery of 150 new 40’ refrigerated containers in year two of a five year equipment replacement plan. The replacement plan aims to reduce the average age of the entire Sea Star Line refrigerated container fleet to less than three years. The new 40’ refrigerated containers are set to arrive at the Blount Island Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida in June 2013. The reefers will be fit with Carrier PrimeLine Machinery, the latest technology available for refrigerated equipment.

Sea Star Line, ACT Sign LNG Bunkering System Agreement

Sea Star Line, LLC and Applied Cryo Technologies (ACT), in cooperation with Dragon Products, have finalized plans for the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering system that will supply Sea Star Line’s new ships. Sea Star Line and its parent company TOTE are building the world’s first LNG-powered containerships that will begin serving the Puerto Rican market later this year. The LNG bunkering system is a critical part of the LNG supply chain for the Marlin Class ships. The system is comprised of 25 cryogenic IMO tanks that will transport LNG from Georgia to Jacksonville. In addition, ACT will ensure that the new ships can be fueled safely and effectively in under six hours, enabling Sea Star Line to maintain its on-time commitment to the people of Puerto Rico.

Sea Star Forms Relationship with Wounded Warrior Project

Sea Star Line, LLC announced that it has forged a new relationship with the Wounded Warrior Project  (WWP) and was a major sponsor for the Wounded Warrior Project 8K Run held on Saturday, Sept. 7 in Jacksonville, Fla. “Sea Star Line is an active partner in all of the communities it serves, and this is no exception,” commented Tim Nolan, Sea Star Line, Executive Vice President. Sea Star Line not only made a financial commitment toward the race, but also had over 50 enthusiastic employees entered and ten volunteers, as well as, family members eager to help with race festivities.

Sea Star Line Expands Puerto Rico Service

Sea Star Line, LLC has announced that they are adding the Port of Philadelphia to its rotation.  Sea Star Line vessels will service the port weekly, making calls to the Tioga Marine Terminal each Friday beginning, April 23, 2010. This will replace the current agreement with Horizon Lines, LLC, however cargo will still be accepted in Elizabeth, N.J. Sea Star Line vessels are configured for both Lo/Lo and Ro/Ro service. In addition to flexibly designed container and trailer space, they feature a garage area that accommodates oversized cargo, and another garage dedicated to automobiles.

Sea Star to Implement New Chassis Program

Sea Star Line informs that as part of its long term program related to chassis utilization, commencing Monday, June 2, 2014, it will introduce a new chassis program for shipments moving to and from the Southeast United States. Sea Star Line Announces Commercial Leadership Changes

Sea Star Line, LLC announced today that Bill Taylor will assume leadership of Sea Star’s United States sales team as Vice President, US Sales. Eduardo Pagan, who held the position of Vice President, Commercial Services will now hold the position of Vice President and General Manager, Puerto Rico and Caribbean. “We are extremely pleased to have Bill on board as he brings 30 years of sales experience in the ocean transportation industry.” said Peter Keller, Sea Star Line President. Sea Star Line Barges to Serve Puerto Rico Trade

Finalizing an agreement to service Puerto Rico trade, Sea Star Line, LLC will lease two barges with combined additional capacity of 800 forty-foot equivalent units (FEUS).   The weekly barge service, with a barge departing both San Juan and Jacksonville every Thursday, will commence on January 29, 2015 with a six day transit. The barge is configured to hold dry and refrigerated containers and Sea Star Line has on-hired over 2,100 pieces of equipment to support the additional capacity.   Tim Nolan, President of Sea Star Line, said, “The new barge service will compliment Sea Star Line's current two vessel calls per week and ultimately act as a bridge until the first of new Marlin Class vessels are delivered in October of this year."   

Sea Star Continues Puerto Rico Investments

Sea Star Line, LLC has entered an agreement to on-hire another barge to add to its current service package for shipments from Jacksonville to Puerto Rico. The new asset has the capacity for 320 dry units and its initial departure is scheduled for the first week of April. In January, Sea Star Line added two barges to address increased demand in the market. The total capacity for both barges is 750 FEUs with dedicated space for 84 refrigerated containers. Sea Star Enlarges Refrigeration Fleet, Preps for LNG Ships

Sea Star Line, LLC said that it has increased its refrigerated container fleet by 25% in the past year to better serve the Puerto Rico trade. Sea Star is also in year two of a five year refrigerated equipment replacement plan. The replacement plan aims to reduce the average age of the entire Sea Star Line refrigerated container fleet to less than three years. Additionally, Sea Star Line recently entered into a five year agreement to acquire new gensets to support the increased reefer fleet. “We must begin transforming our equipment fleet to meet the needs of our customers and in preparation for our new LNG ships entering the Puerto Rico trade at the end of 2015,” said Jim Wagstaff, vice president of operations.

Sea Star Line Announces Rate Increases

Sea Star Line announced that it is implementing a general rate increase, effective April 1, 2012. The general rate increase of 3.5 percent  increase will be administered on shipments between U.S. ports and Puerto Rico. Sea Star Line cited escalating operational costs as the main driver for the increase. “Sea Star Line remains committed to the Puerto Rico trade and needs to implement rate increases and other activities to help to ensure continued profitability. This will position Sea Star Line to continue to reinvest in the Puerto Rico trade,” said Mike Nicholson, vice president of Strategic Planning & Yield Analysis. Effective March 5, 2012, a new chassis program is effective for shipments moving to and from the Northeast United States (NY/NJ/PHL Region).

Sea Star Line Vessel Used in Training Exercise

On April 2, 2014, Sea Star Line’s vessel El Faro and its employees participated in a joint training exercise at North Florida shipyards. The training exercise focused on evaluating agency procedures, communication plans and training programs to assure all agencies can respond in the most efficient way to emergency events and to mitigate risks and damage. “The mock training exercise was an excellent opportunity to participate in and ensure that our local emergency agencies are prepared for emergency response events,” stated Jim Wagstaff, vice president of operations for Sea Star Line, LLC.

Sea Star Line, Boys & Girls Clubs Partner to Name Marlin Class Ships

In June 2014, Sea Star Line partnered with the 11 clubs of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Puerto Rico in a contest to name the new liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels which will be dedicated to the Puerto Rico trade by TOTE, Sea Star Line’s parent company. The Marlin Class vessels have attracted international attention as the first cargo ships in the world to run on natural gas. In addition to their improved environmental profile, the Marlins will represent a new standard in safety and TOTE’s long-term commitment to the people of Puerto Rico.

Willman to Lead National Sales Force

Chris Willman to Lead Sea Star Line’s National Sales Force. Sea Star Line, LLC has announced the promotion of Chris Willman to Director of National Field Sales. Chris joined Sea Star Line in March 2005 as an inside sales representative. Since then, Chris has held several key sales positions with his most recent role being sales manager for NVOCC & FAK accounts. “Chris’ sales experience in the Puerto Rico market, combined with his expertise in sales development and sales processes, make him the right choice to lead this group. We will continue to ensure that the direction and organization of the national sales group is aligned with the company’s broader objectives.” said Bill Taylor, vice president of sales.

Sea Star Assists Vessel Rescue

While in transit from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the crew of Sea Star Line’s El Morro vessel received distress calls from a small fishing vessel in the Atlantic Ocean. The fishing vessel was attempting to hail the U.S. Coast Guard’s Jacksonville Sector with no success due to a weak transmission signal. TOTE Finalizes Charter for LNG Containerships

TOTE, Inc. announced an agreement today between its operating companies TOTE Shipholdings Inc. and Sea Star Line LLC on the charter of the two new Marlin Class vessels being built by TOTE Shipholdings at NASSCO in San Diego, Calif. The new Marlin Class ships will be the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered containerships in the world and will almost double the cargo capacity available to Puerto Rico each week. Two Ocean Shipping Companies to Pay $3.4M

Sea Star Line LLC and Horizon Lines LLC have agreed to resolve allegations that they violated the False Claims Act by fixing the price of government cargo transportation contracts between the continental United States and Puerto Rico, the Department of Justice announced today. Sea Star’s Purchase Appoved

Sea Star Line, LLC (Sea Star) announced that its bid to purchase certain assets of Navieras/NPR, Inc. and of certain related entities was approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. TOTE Shifts Maritime Companies under Unified Brand

U.S. Jones Act carrier TOTE announced it has shifted operating companies Totem Ocean Trailer Express and Sea Star Line, respectively serving the Alaskan and Puerto Rican/Caribbean markets. Going forward, the companies will be known collectively as TOTE Maritime. Sea Star Line has delivered goods to Puerto Rico for more than 30 years with twice weekly reliable service that is responsible for goods traveling from the U.S. to the island, while Totem Ocean Trailer Express provides twice weekly service to Alaska and is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
