Second Hybrid Superstar RoPax Delivered to Finnlines

Finnlines announced it has taken delivery of Finncanopus, its second of two Superstar-series freight-passenger (ro-pax) vessels from shipbuilder China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai.The newbuild is slated to enter service on Finnlines’ line between Finland and Sweden (Naantali–Långnäs–Kapellskär) in February 2024. Green Light to Stena, Hyundai Glovis JV

The European Commission has approved the creation of a joint venture by Swedish Stena Rederi, part of Stena AB, and German Glovis Europe, which is controlled by South Korean Hyundai Glovis.Earlier, the companies have filed a merger application with the European Commission’s competition authorities for the unnamed joint venture.Created through the purchase of shares, the new unit would mainly operate short-sea transport services on pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) vessels in Europe."The European Commission has approved, under the EU Merger Regulation, the creation of a joint venture by Stena Rederi of Sweden, part of the Stena Sphere…

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for 6 Finnlines Vessels

Wärtsilä scrubber systems are selected for six modern Ro-Ro vessels of Finnlines.

With new, more stringent sulphur oxide (SOx) emission regulations due to take effect January 2015, Finnlines has ordered Wärtsilä Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems for six of its Baltic and North Sea fleet of vessels, Wärtsilä said. By selecting the scrubber systems, Wärtsilä said the vessels will be able to operate in compliance with the new environmental regulations while continuing to operate on heavy fuel oil. The systems will also operate in compliance with the water discharge criteria set by regulators.

Navis to Supply Dynamic Positioning System to STX Finland

Finnish dynamic positioning system developer Navis Engineering has won a contract from STX Finland Oy to supply its NavDP4000 DP technology to Aura II, currently under construction in Turku, Finland and due for delivery in 2012. Aura II is a multi-purpose dry cargo ship and Baltic Sea oil recovery vessel that will be deployed by Meriaura Ltd, the Finnish provider of sea transport services for industrial products and general cargo. It is the first commercial vessel to run entirely on liquid bio-fuels and will be equipped with the Navis DP1 class system, meeting Bureau Veritas DYNAPOS AM/AT class notation requirements. The NavDP4000 is the latest of Navis’ DP systems, combining elements of its predecessor, Navis IVCS, with latest technology.

Wärtsilä Supplies Bio-Fuel for Cargo Vessel

Wärtsilä's leading engine technology offers flexibility which enables switching of fuels without any interruption in operation should the need arise. This will be the first installation ever where a European commercial shipping operation is going to permanently use liquid bio-fuel. Wärtsilä, the marine industry's leading solutions provider and systems integrator, has been contracted by the STX Finland shipyard in Turku, Finland, to supply the main engines for a new multi-purpose cargo vessel. SHINEC Builds Interiors for RAON

The Shipbuilding Joint Stock Company (SHINEC) has won a $200,000 contract to build the interiors for five ships owned by the RAON group of the Czech Republic. The work, covering wooden wall and floor planks, furniture, cupboards and lounge bars, is expected to last through the end of the year. The conversion of five ships owned by RAON into luxurious “floating hotels” is part of the largest-ever ship engineering project by the Republic of Czech, under the general European countries’ scheme to boost the country’s sea transport services and cruise travelling. The ships, after being upgraded, will become GOLFBOATs, opulent ships designed as 34-room hotels, each with modern amenities such as golf clubs and shops, indoor golf facilities, swimming pools and restaurants.
