Blount-Barker Signs Contract For Sea Wolf Marine Tug

This past August, Blount-Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with Sea Wolf Marine of Bayonne, N.J. to build a 2,400-hp, 85-ft. (25.9 m) double chine, all welded twin-screw tug set for delivery in April 2002. Bristol Harbor Group has been contracted to modify the Blount classic 85-ft. (25.9-m) tug design to take advantage of CNC (computerized numeric controlled) cutting. The tug will be powered by two CAT 3512 engines; 4:1 twin gears and two 65kW generators will supply ship service power. Keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 70-78-in. in diameter, the tug will be used for marine towing along the inland and intracoastal waterways on the East Coast.

Blount-Barker Delivers Tug

The 85-ft. tug, Sea Bull built by Blount-Barker Shipbuilding was delivered to its port of Bayonne, NJ, on April 21, 2002. The vessel will be used for marine towing in the greater New York area. The Sea Bull is powered by a pair of 12-cylinder, 3512B diesel engines, which produce 1,100 hp at 1,200 rpm. The Caterpillar engines run through Twin Disc 4.03:1 reduction/reversing gears which turn Aquamet shafts and two Kahlenburg, stainless, 4-blade 76-in. propellers. The vessel can maintain a free running speed of 12 knots. The Sea Bull has a Timberland Almon Johnson electric towing winch and a pair of Caterpillar 65 kW diesel generators to supply service power for the winch and other on-board uses. The tug is rated for forward bollard pull of 25 tons.

Bristol Harbor Will Modify Tug

Bristol Harbor Marine Design (BHMD) was recently awarded the contract from Blount/Barker Shipbuilding, of Warren R.I., to modify the design of an 85 ft. tug. The new tug is based on an 85 ft. tug currently under construction at the yard, the design of which was developed by BHMD and based on a classic Blount design. BHMD will take advantage of Computerized Numeric Controlled (CNC) cutting for the hull and deckhouse modification. Two CAT 3512 engines and 4:1 Twin Disc gears will power the tugboat. Two 65kW generators will supply the ship’s service power. The tug will be keel cooled and equipped with two, four-blade stainless steel propellers measuring 76-in. in diameter. In August, Blount Barker Shipbuilding signed a contract with Sea Wolf Marine of Bayonne, N.J.

Victaulic to Add Manufacturing Space in Pennsylvania

Victaulic, a manufacturer of mechanical pipe joining solutions, has unveiled a plan to build an additional state-of-the-art manufacturing center in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania. The 400,000 square foot facility is the result of increased domestic demand for the company’s products. The facility is expected to break ground later this year and be fully operational in 2019. “This new facility will play an important role in meeting increased customer demand, while also producing the highest quality products in the industry -- something our customers have come to expect from us since our first innovation nearly 100 years ago,” said John F. Malloy, CEO of Victaulic.

COMSAT Mobile Communications -- Working With U.S. Coast Guard to Save Lives at Sea

Two employees of the COMSAT Mobile Communications (CMC) Land Earth Station in Southbury, Conn., were recognized recently by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) for coordinating life-saving satellite communications for the Coast Guard, the maritime vessel Ocean Wolf and four rescue ships. The incident began around 6:30 p.m. EST on Monday, October 30, 2000, when the (USCG) Station in San Juan, Puerto Rico, contacted Southbury requesting assistance in communicating with Ocean Wolf, which had suffered an explosion in the engine room and was taking on water. Unknown at the time was the extent of damage and danger to the vessel — it was adrift and Tropical Storm Joyce was bearing down on its location.

Deep Sea Supply Awarded Contracts

Deep Sea Supply ASA has been awarded medium term charter contracts for two of its AHTS vessels the Sea Lynx and the Amadon Tide in North Sea and West Africa. Total value of contracts is $13m The company will transfer the vessel McNee Tide (and rename the vessel Sea Wolf) from West Africa to the currently very strong North Sea spot market. The vessel Sea Lynx, operating in the North Sea, has been awarded a 2 well option 1 well contract to Island Oil & Gas Ltd. offshore Ireland. Expected duration is 60 - 90 days. Amadon Tide (to be renamed Sea Bear), operating in West Africa has been awarded a contract to Adoon Pte. Ltd. in Nigeria from 1st May 2006 with expected duration 67-95 days.

Pending Federal, State Legislation Threatens

Legislation introduced by U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) could severely damage Florida's offshore gaming industry. Under existing federal law, offshore gaming in international waters is legal, unless state pass laws specifically prohibiting the activity. Wolf's bill (H.R. 316) would reverse the situation, requiring states wanting offshore casino boats to pass laws allowing them. However, state assistant attorney general Jon Glogau said passage of the Wolf bill would instantly nullify the 1987 amendment by then-state Sen. Gwen Margolis, which allowed day-cruise gaming. Unless Florida passed a new law after enactment of the Wolf bill, day-cruise gaming would be illegal.

Firefighters Extinguish Tanker Blaze

Firefighters extinguished a fire which broke out on the Panamanian-registered tanker Sea Wolf 1 off the Greek port of Piraeus on Monday, injuring one crew member, the Merchant Marine Ministry said. "The fire broke out in the engine room for unknown reasons," the ministry said. A ministry spokesman said the Egyptian crewman had suffered minor burns and had been taken to hospital. The nine other crew members, two Greeks and seven Egyptians, were unhurt. Two fire-fighting vessels put out the blaze while three coastguard boats, six tugs and other ships went to the scene.

Shell Announces Plan for Penguins Filed Redevelopment

Shell announced the final investment decision for the Penguins field redevelopment project in the U.K. sector, which includes the construction of a new-build Sevan Marine designed cylindrical floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. The Penguins field is in 165 metres of water, approximately 150 miles north east of the Shetland Islands. Discovered in 1974, the field was first developed in 2002 and is a joint venture between Shell (50 percent and operator) and ExxonMobil (50 percent).

Cruise-to-Nowhere Measure Introduced

U.S. Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) introduced legislation (H.R. 316) that threatens to halt, and even reverse the expansion of the offshore gaming industry. Under existing law, offshore gaming in international water is legal, unless states pass laws specifically prohibiting the activity. Wolf's bill would reverse the situation, requiring states that want offshore casino vessels pass laws to allow them. Offshore gaming operations would be outlawed in states that have not passed laws to legalize them.

Houston Wade Fishermen Swept Out to Sea

In the course of a busy weekend Coast Guard Houston crews suspended their search for two missing wade fishermen near the mouth of the Brazos River Sunday afternoon, rescued four with the Galveston Fire Department from a sinking boat near Sea Wolf Park Sunday morning and assisted five people in a disabled boat drifting toward the Sabine Pass jetties Saturday evening. A bystander watched the two wade fishermen get washed out Saturday and called for help. The Coast Guard began searching by boat and helicopter. Gulf Coast Rescue Squad and Texas Equusearch, both volunteer organizations, have searched as well, but all efforts without success and the search has been suspended. At 5:47 p.m.

Minimizing the Transfer of Invasive Aquatic Species

Shipowners should take action to reduce the impact of invasive aquatic species (IAS) carried by hull biofouling. The UK P&I Club has published its top tips on how to reduce biofouling on board vessels to achieve greater efficiency and reduce environmental risk. According to Madlene Wangrau, UK P&I biofouling  is the undeseriable accumulation of various aquatic organisms on submerged structures. “Biofouling is undesirable accumulation of various aquatic organisms (microorganisms, plants, algae and animals) on submerged structures like ships’ hulls.

Malaysian Frigates Deal for Clyde Yards

According to the Herald, BAe Systems' Clyde shipyards have won a contract to design and part-build two frigates for the Malaysian navy which will help safeguard hundreds of Scottish engineering jobs. Sections of the warships are to be built at the company's Govan and Scotstoun facilities, but final assembly of the completed blocks and launch will take place at the Labuan shipyard in Malaysia. The Royal Malaysian Navy operates two frigates built at the former Yarrow shipyard in the 1990s, two acquired from Italy, six corvettes and eight missile craft as well as more than 50 inshore patrol boats. A BAe spokesman said it was too early to put a price tag on the Glasgow work, but confirmed that it would involve detailed naval design and the construction of "block sections" of the frigates.

The Type 45 destroyer HMS Diamond has relieved her sister ship HMS Daring to become the latest Royal Navy warship serving with the 26-nation Combined Maritime Forces, sailing in tandem with Australia's HMAS Melbourne. The Bahrain-based force directs the work of three distinct task groups of around six warships each, operating from the head of the Gulf to the Red Sea in the west, the shores of India and Pakistan in the east, and the Seychelles in the south - an area of some 2.5 million square miles (6.5 million square kilometres).

Oil from Sunken Iranian Tanker Diffusing in East China Sea

Oil from an Iranian tanker that sank in the East China Sea has diffused into four separate slicks, covering a combined area of just over 100 square kms (39 square miles), Chinese authorites said late on Wednesday. Earlier satellite imaging showed two large slicks, with the larger one also thicker and more concentrated, but the latest data had found four slicks ranging in size from 48 square kms (19 square miles) to 5.5 square kms (2.1 square miles), the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said.

Iranian Tanker Produces 2 Slicks in East China Sea

An Iranian oil tanker that sank in the East China Sea has left two oil slicks covering a combined 109 square km (42 square miles), the Chinese government said, as maritime police scoured for damage and prepared to explore the wreck. Satellite imaging showed a slick of 69 square km (26.6 square miles) and a second 40 square km (15.4 square miles) slick, which is less thick and not as concentrated, the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said in a statement late on Tuesday. U.S. Navy Contracts Update

The U.S. The Navy is modifying the total amount of a previously awarded contract to Huntington Ingalls Inc, Newport News, Va., (N00024-09-C-2116) by $407,408,093 in order to extend construction preparation efforts and provide the ability to procure additional long lead material and advance construction activities for CVN 79 if required. The current contract has been in place since 2009. This modification for additional long lead material and advance construction activity may help preserve the construction schedule. Work will be performed in Newport News, Va., and is expected to complete by October 2015. Additional funding is not being obligated at this time. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

A stricken Iranian tanker that sank in the East China Sea on Sunday in the worst oil ship disaster in decades has produced a large oil slick, Chinese media and Japanese authorities said on Monday, as worries grew over damage to the marine ecosystem. CEMEX UK Orders Dredger from Damen

CEMEX UK Marine Limited has placed an order for the first Damen Marine Aggregate Dredger (MAD). The vessel, which will be built at Damen Shipyards Galati, in Romania, is designed to extract sand and gravel from the sea bed up to depths of 55 meters, including in the challenging conditions experienced in the North Sea. Damen said the MAD is the result of extensive market research and customer consultation. A new, future-facing vessel of this type is aligned with an aggregate industry faced with an aging fleet of vessels and an increased focus on marine activity.
