Third Crewman from Sunken Livestock Carrier Rescued

A third crewman from a cargo ship that capsized this week off the coast of Japan with more than 40 crew and some 6,000 cattle on board was found alive on Friday after he was spotted by a search plane, Japan's coastguard said.The man, 30-year-old Filipino Jay-nel Rosals, was found on a liferaft waving for help 2 km (1.2 miles) off Kodakarajima, a small island in Japan's southern Kagoshima prefecture, the coastguard said.He was conscious and was able to walk when the coast guard rescued him. Rescuers also found an overturned orange lifeboat floating at sea some 4 km off Kodakarajima, but no one was found on that boat.Rosals was only the third crew member to be found so far from the Gulf Livestock 1, which capsized in the East China Sea on Wednesday and is believed to have sunk.

Fourth Bourbon Rhode Crew Member Confirmed Dead

Bourbon confirmed on Wednesday that the body of a fourth crew member has been recovered following the sinking of its vessel Bourbon Rhode last week. Only three of the 14 Bourbon Rhode crew members have been rescued as the search continues for seven mariners still missing.The body of the fourth mariner was discovered on Tuesday and transferred on the French Navy frigate Ventôse, Bourbon said. Crowley Crew Aids Ill-fated Catamaran

The crew of the Crowley-managed, 393-foot, heavy lift vessel Ocean Crescent recently provided assistance to five people aboard the damaged and drifting catamaran Rainmaker during a routine transit from Progresso, Mexico, to Halifax, Canada. Search Underway for Missing Sailboat from Chicago

Coast Guard units from both sides of Lake Michigan are conducting a search for the BALANCE, a 32-ft. sailboat, white with black trim, white sails and a smiley face on the mainsail. Aboard the BALANCE are Jay Rzechula, 43-years old from Oaklawn, Ill., and his four children Harley a 13-year old male, Margie a 12-year old female, Casey a 10-year old male and Abbey an 8-year old female. BALANCE was last heard from on August 11, when one of the children called home to speak with their mother. The boat was heading home to the Jackson Park Yacht Club from Mackinac Island. Coast Guard search and rescue boats and aircraft from both sides of the lake and a C-130 search plane from Clearwater, Fl., have been focusing their search between Manistee, Mich., and Chicago.

British Rower Plucked From Sea

A lone British rower on a cross-Pacific odyssey who had eaten nothing for two weeks but a flying fish was rescued from his boat after a Coast Guard search plane found him, officials said. Andrew Halsey, a 42-year-old bricklayer from Croydon, South London, was picked up by a Korean fishing vessel after a C-130 Hercules long-range aircraft out of Honolulu found the rower 1,200 miles (1,920 km) southeast of Hawaii. The rescue plane left Honolulu Wednesday morning after receiving an emergency signal from Halsey. The search plane coordinated the pickup while circling Halsey and he was plucked safely from his rowboat. "He was very weak," said Lt. Mark Harrison, commander of the C-130.

Heroes on the High Seas

On Sunday, December 17, 2000 a raging storm was brewing off the coast of Virginia. Record-breaking waves were measuring anywhere from 30-40 ft. and the wind was gusting at about 70 knots. In the middle of the Atlantic, (220 miles off the coast of Norfolk, Va. to be exact), a 600 ft. (182.8 m), 21,000-ton cruise ship was in trouble, its crewmembers ready to abandon ship into the cold ocean. With only seconds to decide the fate of his vessel, the captain of the Sea Breeze I, placed a mayday call via the vessel's Inmarsat Standard-C distress feature, indicating that the now-defunct Premier Cruise Lines' vessel might sink. Coast Guard Medevacs 18-Year-Old From Cruise Ship

A Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater rescue crew medically evacuated an 18-year-old male from a cruise ship 250-miles southwest of Clearwater Beach, Fla. Tyler King, fell 20 ft. from the cruise ship's mast to the deck. King landed on his head causing head trauma, a hematoma behind the eye and a broken bone in his face. The Coast Guard received a call from a doctor on board the 739-ft. Carnival cruise ship Fantasy, home ported in Miami, Fla., reporting the male's condition and requesting Coast Guard assistance. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater launched an HH-60 rescue helicopter and a C-130 search plane to assist in the medevac of King. The rescue crews arrived on scene and hoisted King into the rescue helicopter. King was transferred to Tampa General Hospital.
