Torqeedo Drives Toward Marine Electromobility

A 14-meter launch placed into service last year by the Swedish Sea Rescue Society has parallel diesel and electric drives consisting of twin 650 hp diesels with waterjets and dual Torqeedo Deep Blue 50 kW electric motors with 10 kWh Deep Blue lithium batteries. (Photo: Torqeedo)

The future is painted bright for companies dealing in hybrid and electric marine propulsion, as vessel owners and operators pursue cleaner technologies to comply with ever-stricter environmental regulations while also seeking ways to improve their bottom line.Case in point is Germany-based electric drives manufacturer Torqeedo, which has to date delivered more than 100,000 electric propulsion products for a wide range of recreational and commercial customers. The hybrid/electric market is one that’s ripe for growth, says Dr. Ralf Plieninger, COO and CTO, Torqeedo.

SeaRobotics Unveils Autonomous Hybrid Boat

Florida-based SeaRobotics Corporation, which specializes in small, smart vessels that are remotely or autonomously operated, has completed its factory acceptance testing of its new entry into the autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) workboat market — the SR-Endurance 7.0 meter (22.96′) system.According to a press release from the the innovator behind the HullBUG, a groundbreaking hull cleaning ROV, and the HYCAT, the system is optimized for sonar research through the utilization of an optionally manned helm configuration and a serial diesel electric propulsion system.Outfitted with an instrumented launch and recovery system (LARS), and supporting hydrographic winch system…

Work‘bots’: Autonomous Vessels Arrive

The near-shore and inland workboat fleet is at the leading edge for autonomous vessel developmentWhile the advent of autonomous workboats are not exactly mainstream, you better believe that in the not-too-distant future they will be a reality on waterways in and around the U.S. Today there remain more questions than answers, particularly on the legal, logistics and insurance side of the coin. But the technology is evolving at record pace, providing many in the industry with mixed emotions. Excitement. Controversy. Curiosity. Skepticism. These are just a few of thoughts, and emotions that arise to any mention of the topic of autonomous vessels. It’s happening now.

Torqeedo Powers Searobotics Unmanned Vessels

SeaRobotics specializes in creating vessels that are remotely or autonomously operated. A number of these unmanned surface vessels (USV) are powered by motors manufactured by Torqeedo, a leader in electric propulsion. The USVs by SeaRobotics range from 3.5-11 meters. Customers using these USVs include domestic and international military organizations, universities, oceanographic institutes, and various government agencies. Applications for USVs are limitless and SeaRobotics is able to adapt their craft for customer requests.

SeaRobotics Delivers Autonomous Hull Cleaning System

SeaRobotics’ HullBUG is lowered into the water for a field test.

SeaRobotics has delivered the first HullBUG (Hull Bio-inspired Underwater Grooming) System to the Center for Corrosion and Biofouling Control at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. This will be tested and further developed at the newly commissioned Large Scale Seawater Facility , which is located at Port Canaveral and funded by the U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research (ONR). The HullBUG system is an autonomous underwater vehicle designed to crawl on ship hulls or other underwater structures and "groom" their surface.
