Wärtsilä was tapped to supply the main engines and liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel gas supply systems for two new LNG-fueled escort tugs being built for Canada’s HaiSea Marine, a joint venture between the Haisla Nation and Seaspan Marine Transportation. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd., the vessels are under construction at Sanmar Shipyards in Turkey. They are expected to be two of the most environmentally advanced escort tugs operating in the coastal waters of British Columbia in Canada.

Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Shipyards announced it has inked a deal with HaiSea Marine for the build and delivery of three liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled escort tugs and two battery-electric harbor tugs which will provide ship-assist and escort towing services to LNG carriers calling at LNG Canada’s new export facility in Kitimat, B.C., on Canada's west coast.Following an initial tender process which began in 2018, HaiSea Marine has awarded the contract for all five tugs to Sanmar plus an option for a sixth.

Seaspan Marine said it has taken delivery of the first of two secondhand tugs acquired from Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Shipyards. The two 24-meter, 75+ ton bollard pull tugs are escort rated and feature Class 1 Fire Fighting capability. Seaspan Marine Transportation said it has appointed Linda Wortman as Chief Financial Officer.Wortman brings to this position more than 25 years of accounting and finance experience. She joined Seaspan in 2008 as Controller, Marine and was promoted to Vice President, Corporate Finance, Accounting in 2016. Her responsibilities were expanded to include Seaspan’s Corporate Supply Chain Management and Risk and Insurance functions in 2017.

Canada's Seaspan Ferries will add two new Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) - battery hybrid ferries to its fleet in 2021.The vessels will be constructed by Damen Shipyards Gorinchem B.V. at their Mangalia Shipyard in Romania, said a press release from the marine transportation services provider.With construction scheduled to begin in 2019, the vessels are expected to go into operation in 2021. Seaspan announced the appointment of Paul Hilder to Vice President, Marine Operations. As a member of Seaspan’s senior leadership team, Hilder will oversee the operational efficiency and safety of the company’s vessels and marine crews. Working in collaboration with Port Captains, Dispatch and the Regulatory & Compliance departments, Hilder will also oversee and monitor ongoing operational and training issues in order to reduce potential risks and liabilities to the company. Hilder has a long, storied past in the BC marine industry.

Peter Lister has joined the senior leadership team at Seaspan Marine as Vice President, Commercial Services, responsible for marketing, sales and customer relations. He will develop and build marketing strategies, customer service quality control measures, customer service standards and account management processes. Lister brings to the role more than 20 years of experience as a research and innovation leader in the forestry sector. He joins the company from FPInnovations where he served as Vice President, Forest Operations & Wood Products.

Seaspan has named three new Vice Presidents to its Senior Leadership Team, announcing the appointments of Linda Wortman as Vice President, Finance & Accounting; Catherine Chick as Vice President, Business Services & Technology; and Shawn Chylinski as Vice President, Health, Safety, Environment & Quality. As Vice President, Finance & Accounting, Linda is responsible for strategic financial oversight of the marine division and corporate services. She is a key advisor to the CFO and Executive Leadership Team and ensures information and metrics are available to inform value added business decisions. Linda joined Seaspan in 2008 as Controller, Marine and was appointed to the role of Vice President, Finance & Accounting in January 2016.

“We don’t usually remove the heads at mid-life on the Cummins engines,” Randy Beckler, Shore Engineer for Seaspan Marine, explained in reference to the 2003 launched Seaspan Venture’s third like-for-like repower. The repower was completed in the first week of February 2016. The Seaspan Venture, like her sister the Seaspan Tempest, had a pair of Cummins KTA38 M0 engines when new builds. These engines were changed out at over 40,000 hours. In 2016, the second set of engines had around 42,000 hours.

Seaspan Marine unveiled the newest addition to its marine fleet, a 16,000-metric-ton barge named Seaspan 252, during an official commissioning ceremony at Seaspan’s North Vancouver Barge Maintenance Terminal today. The 114-meter-long by 27.5-meter-wide bulk barge is the largest of its kind in Canada, and can carry the equivalent of 1,454 standard dump truck loads of limestone. Designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. and constructed by Seabridge Marine Contractors Ltd. at Jiangsu Yanzijiang Shipbuilding Co. Ltd.

A 16,000 DWT deck cargo barge, Seaspan 252, was handed over to its owner, Seaspan Marine, in August, 2015. The barge, 114 meters long by 27.5 meters wide with a depth of 8.4 meters and classed ABS +A1 Barge, was designed by Robert Allan Ltd. of Vancouver, B.C. and constructed by Seabridge Marine Contractors Ltd. at Jiangsu Yanzijiang Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. in China. Launched on July 31, the barge is now being towed by Seabridge Marine’s tug Pacific Hickory to British Columbia and is due to arrive in late September.

Bart Reynolds has been hired to take over as president of Seaspan Marine, the company announced today. Appointed to lead Seaspan’s Marine Division, Reynolds joins the company with more than 20 years of experience in leadership positions and senior management. In the last 15 years, Reynolds has held positions in the offshore supply boat business in the United States, West Africa, the Mediterranean and Latin America, most recently serving as Vice President, Americas at GulfMark Offshore Inc. Prior to that, he worked at Tidewater Marine LLC as Area Manager, U.S. Operations.

Jenny Gethings has been named vice president of business development at Seaspan Marine, the company announced. Gethings will lead Seaspan’s business development team as it continues to pursue new business, identify new markets and develop current and future opportunities for its marine division. Gethings brings to the role more than 25 years in the marine industry, including port operations and cargo logistics, and most recently served as director of global projects for Schenker Canada, where she was responsible for numerous projects worldwide.

Vessel fleets face an increasing number of environmentally focused regulations, adding complexity to their operations and creating urgency around compliance. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), under the Vessel General Permit (VGP), requires that all vessels over 79 feet use an “Environmentally Acceptable Lubricant” (EAL) in oil-to-water interfaces unless technically infeasible. The 2013 VGP revision also requires any above water line hull cleaning or deck wash-downs resulting in discharge to be conducted with “minimally toxic…

The B.C. Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Board (SSRB), with support from the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism & Skills Training, is kicking off their Shipbuilders campaign with an online contest. Individuals can participate in the campaign and win a chance at one of three cash prizes with a total value of six thousand dollars by sharing a story, video, and/or survey about their experiences in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry. Selected stories and elements of the survey will be used throughout the development of the Shipbuilders campaign, and three finalists will be chosen by a jury of industry experts to take home cash prizes of $3000.00 for first place (donated by Seaspan Marine Corporation), $2,000.00 for second place (donated by B.C.

A steel boat can continue to serve for many years if properly maintained. Seaspan Marine is the largest towing company on the British Columbia coast. Utilizing the services of their sister companies Vancouver Drydock, Vancouver Shipyard and Victoria Shipyards, they do much of their own repair and maintenance work. The upgrade and maintenance of the 25.24 by 7.56-meter (82.8 x 24.8) Seaspan Cutlass was done at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyard, which was the yard that built the tug and her sisters, including the Seaspan Cavalier in 1975. Both tugs have received similar upgrades.
