Waterford’s Tugboat Roundup Celebrates 20 Years

A modest event designed as a get-together for commercial workboat operators in upstate New York is now celebrating 20 years as a three-day community festival.On September 11, 1999, local resident John Callaghan had an idea to bring in some friends who ran tugs on the Hudson River and NYS Canal System for a quick one-day get together, right at the entrance to the famed Erie Canal. Callaghan, then a tug captain himself for the state canal system, brought in seven tugs and cooked several dozen hot dogs.

GOST, Phantom Rescue Fight to end Child trafficking

GOST (Global Ocean Security Technologies), a world leader in marinesecurity, tracking, monitoring and video surveillance systems, announced today that it has partnered with Phantom Rescue in its fight against child trafficking. Phantom Rescue is a non-profit organization that provides awareness and deterrence for the prevention of child trafficking, enhanced global networking to stop the underground activities that contribute to human sex trafficking and most importantly, the organization takes direct action to locate, rescue, and return “taken” children to the safety of their loved ones. “Everyday, 46 children are stolen and forced into sex slavery or labor in the United States. US Ferries Are Safer, but Regulatory Burdens Grow

In recent years, ferries have been in the spotlight, in part because of growing mass transit needs and increased road congestion, but also because of concerns about the deadly South Korean ferry sinking last April. We asked Captain Terri Bernstein, the Passenger Vessel Association’s 2014 President, about the industry’s status in the United States. Based in Alexandria, VA, the PVA has over 500 member companies. Ferries are safer, especially since 9/11, but regulatory requirements have swelled and can be onerous, Bernstein said. She’s the owner of BB Riverboats, Inc.

New Products: Marine Security Systems

The USCG's new Defender Class craft from Safe Boats will be powered exclusively by twin Honda BF225 4-stroke outboards. The Hondas can propel the new 25-ft. (7.6-m) Response Boat - Small, or RB-S as the Coast Guard refers to it through 30-mph winds and 6-ft. seas. The BF225s will provide a top speed of over 45 knots allowing the Safe Boat reaches plane in less than four seconds. Its marine-grade 5086 aluminum hull with integral, sealed air chamber and polyethylene, non-deflatable foam collar make the craft one of the safest boats on the water. The RB-S features an all-welded, self-bailing deck; insulated and heated full cabin; upper spotter windows; port and starboard sliding doors; marine electrical cable; stepped transom; and locking long gun storage.

Boston Whaler Debuts New Security Products

Timing, it is said, is everything. Boston Whaler Commercial & Government Products has combined timing with a sterling reputation in introducing a pair of new products touted as a plank in the war to keep terrorism from U.S. shores. According to Eric Caplan, director of Boston Whaler Commercial & Government Products, the Sentinel is a unmanned surface vessel (USV), which is a sensing platform able to carry a wide variety of the latest technology sensing systems available. It is designed to be a multi-tasking craft, able to carry sonar for mine detection equipment as easily as it would carry systems able to sense bio-terrorism and nuclear devices aboard ships entering a harbor. "This country obviously has a big job ahead of it, to secure its borders," Caplan said.
