MOL Embarks on Low-Pressure CO2 Research Program

Future Energy Exports CRC, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corporation, Low Emission Technology Australia, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Osaka Gas have executed a project agreement for the "LP Technology R&D Project" to conduct research and development to demonstrate the technical feasibility and operability of low-pressure and low temperature solutions for the bulk transport of CO2 by ships.The LP Technology R&D Project will involve studying behaviour and boil off characteristics of liquid CO2 under dynamic operating conditions and the impact of non-CO2 components.

AVEVA Inspires Korean Ship Designers

Korean Register Elects a New Chairman and CEO

At a meeting of the general assembly in Seoul, the Korean Register of Shipping (KR) elected Dr. Chon Young-Kee as its new Chairman and CEO. The general assembly oversees the running of KR and comprises 86 voting members. Prior to election, Dr. Chon served as executive vice president of KR’s technical division and this is the first time in KR’s 53 year history that an internal appointment to Chairman and CEO has been made. Dr. Chon takes over from outgoing Chairman and CEO, Dr. Oh Kong-Gyun, who has served two three-year terms. Dr. Chon graduated from Seoul National University with a bachelor's degree in naval architecture and later gained both master and doctorate degrees from Stevenson University in the United States. ABS Signs Agreements in Korea with KOGAS, Universities

ABS signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with several Korean entities to advance local research and development (R&D) efforts. On October 219, 012, ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki signed an MOU with the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) to join in international projects through equity participation in overseas LNG projects. The scope of the agreement includes technological cooperation, training, and co-hosting seminars related to R&D in offshore LNG development, including LNG cargo containment systems, LNG floating storage and regasification units, floating storage and offloading units, LNG fuelled ships, bunkering and subsea exploration and production. “ABS has been a pioneer in advancing LNG technologies,” Wiernicki said. New President of STX Finland

Juha Heikinheimo has resigned from the position as President of STX Finland Oy. He will be replaced by Su-Jou Kim, who currently holds the position as Chairman of STX Finland. Bureau Veritas, Brazilian University Speeds Deepwater Development

International classification society Bureau Veritas has agreed a technical co-operation deal with COPPE/UFRJ, the Ocean Engineering department of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, to set up a joint development centre. The move builds on co-operation agreements with nineteen universities in China, Russia, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, Taiwan and France and is intended to speed the development of tools and technical requirements needed to facilitate Brazil’s expansion into deep offshore oil exploitation. Samsung Uses DELMIA for Digital Shipbuilding Plant

Dassault Systèmes (DS) announced that the shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) has built a simulation-based digital shipyard using DELMIA digital manufacturing technology, enabling the company to successfully establish a real-time supply chain network for collaborative production. With DELMIA, SHI’s Korea-based Geoje Shipyard is able to simulate design and engineering processes and digitally manage its facilities, procedures, and engineering schedules by shipbuilding in a virtual environment. “In the future, Simulation-Based Manufacturing (SBM) will play a pivotal role in strengthening the competitiveness of manufacturing by applying IT technologies,” noted Hwang Gyu-Ok, general manager of the Information System Group for SHI.
