U-Ming Takes on Board Jotun’s Hull Skater

U-Ming's next bulk carrier newbuild being built in China will feature an underwater hull cleaning robot.The Taiwan-headquartered shipping company has signed a commercial agreement with builder Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS) and Norway's Jotun for the Jotun Hull Skating Solutions (HSS) to be installed aboard one of U-Ming’s four liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual- fuel Tier III 190,000 dwt bulk carriers to be built by SWS in Shanghai to support the long term charter with mining giant Anglo American.

Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard Delivers World's First iVLOC

The world’s first intelligent very large ore carrier (iVLOC), the DNV GL-classed Pacific Vision, was delivered by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard to China Merchants Energy Shipping Company.Norway-headquartered international accredited registrar and classification society said in a statement that the vessel is the world’s first VLOC to implement DNV GL’s SmartShip descriptive notation.To qualify for the notation, Pacific Vision has been outfitted with an integration platform, a smart navigation decision support system, a ship energy efficiency management and optimization system, and smart-vessel operation and maintenance system.“It’s a great honour to have worked with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard…

32 Wärtsilä Gensets for Chinese Vessels

Wärtsilä has been awarded the contract to supply newbuild Chinese container vessels with a total of 24 9-cylinder Wärtsilä 32 Auxpac generating sets. The engines will power six 21,000 TEU ships being built at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS) for China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL). The order was placed in June with Wärtsilä's joint venture company CSSC Wärtsilä Engine (Shanghai) Co Ltd (CWEC). Because of its reliability, efficiency, and high availability the Wärtsilä 32 Auxpac engine has become a popular choice for vessels in the upper end of the shipping market. The Wärtsilä 32 is the most powerful of the company's Auxpac range of generating sets.

Van der Velden Marine Systems: Innovating Efficiency

After celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013, Van der Velden Marine Systems, a daughter company of the Damen Group, is not resting on its laurels as the Netherlands-based company’s R&D department works to continue advancing maritime maneuvering and propulsion efficiency. “We are currently building a 97m2 Energy Saving Package (ESPAC) system for a series of three 18,000 TEU vessels being built for CMA CGM at the CSSC-affiliated Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard in China,” said Edwin van Buren, Director R&D at Van der Velden Marine Systems.

MAN G-type Engine Order Book Fattens Up

MAN Diesel & Turbo reports a healthy interest in its ultra-long- stroke G-type engine with orders steadily growing. Most recently, Piraeus-based Polembros and U-ming of Taiwan have placed orders for a further six engines, bringing the current number of G-type orders up to 70 just one year after being available on the market. The six MAN B&W G70ME-C9.2 engines are all destined for 186,300 dwt Capesize bulk carriers and will be manufactured by CSSC-MES Diesel Co. Ltd. (CMD), the Chinese engine manufacturer.

Building of First Chinese G-type Engine Confirmed

Shanghai ceremony celebrates signing of contract with CMD. At a recent ceremony in China, CMD (CSSC-MES Diesel Co., Ltd.) held the official signing of the contract to construct the first Chinese-built MAN B&W design Green Series 7G80ME-C9.2 engine. Due for delivery in June 2013, the engine is bound for a 319,000-dwt, ABS class VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) to be built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (SWS) for Maran Tankers of Greece. The G-series engine is hallmarked by its SFOC, energy efficiency and ability to meet all Tier II criteria.

First VLCC Built to CSR

Global tanker shipping entered a new era of vessel construction Oct 28, when Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS) delivered to ’s Ocean Tankers (Pte) Ltd the first very large crude carrier (VLCC) built to Common Structural Rules (CSR). The 318,000-dwt Hua San, the first of 11 VLCCs confirmed to Lloyd’s Register class at Shanghai Waigaoqiao, was delivered to the owners five months ahead of schedule. The Hua San is the first of an initial order of six VLCCs ordered by Ocean Tankers at Shanghai Waigaoqiao, four of which were classed to Lloyd’s Register.

Italian Owner Taps China Shipbuilder

Rizzo-Bottiglieri-De Carlini Armatori SpA (RBD Armatori), an Italian shipping company, reportedly signed a $180m contract with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard, for two 177,000-dwt ships, which will be the largest ships in the Italian company's fleet, according to a report on China Knowledge. The ships are reportedly scheduled for deliver in 2009 and 2011.

CMB Continues Fleet Rejuvenation

CMB confirmed that its subsidiary, Bocimar and Wah Kwong, have sold the panamax vessel Yasmine Venture (2006 - 73,546 dwt) - ordered in joint venture in 2003 from Jiangnan (China) - to Diana Shipping. The net sale price amounts to $39.6 million, and CMB will realize a capital gain of approximately $5.5 million on this sale. Also, Bocimar and Oak Maritime have concluded an agreement with Chang Myung Shipping (Korea) for the sale of the joint venture vessel Mineral Oak (1996 - 165,693 dwt). The net sale price is $45.3 million. For CMB, this sale will generate a capital gain of approximately $11.5 million, also expected for the third quarter. Finally Bocimar has ordered a 177,000 dwt capesize vessel from SWS (Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard - China). quarter of 2009.
