MOL and Shell Partner to Advance Maritime Decarbonization

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and Shell Marine Products Singapore, a business division of Shell Eastern Trading Pte. Ltd (Shell), have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly focus on the advancement of alternative maritime solutions and managing carbon emissions liabilities holistically, particularly in the development of green future marine fuels. As part of the agreement, the two companies will look to jointly conduct trials to explore the viability of bio- and synthetic fuel options as realistic decarbonization pathways.

Shell Launches New Trunk Piston Engine Oils

Shell Marine has unveiled its next generation Shell Argina and Shell Gadinia trunk piston oils for the medium-speed engine market. As owners face pressures to shift toward cleaner fuels that address emissions regulations, Shell said demand for distillates and low-sulphur heavy fuel oil will only increase as shipping approaches a global fuel sulphur content cap of 0.5 percent, imposed by IMO from 2020. Already, dual-fuel engines are taking an increasing share of the medium speed market.

There has been little reaction by way of statements or position papers from marine fuel lubricant manufacturers to the IMO MEPC70 proposals for a global fuel sulfur content cap of 0.5 percent by 2020 but they are fully aware of the implications of the proposed regulations and are taking what could be termed a ‘pragmatic approach’ to fuel regulation compliance. More Operators Relying on Oil Condition Monitoring -Shell

As of April 2016, Shell Marine Products (SMP) has analyzed more than 50,000 cylinder drain oils samples via its Shell Rapid Lubricants Analysis (RLA) oil condition monitoring service. By identifying potential oil or equipment issues before they become critical, many shipping companies use Shell RLA as part of their planned maintenance regime. Shell Offers Smooth Transition to ECAs

The shipping world has been settling down to new restrictions on sulphur content in fuel, introduced after January 1, 2015 in ECAs. Ships in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, English Channel, and waters 200 nautical miles from the coast of U.S. and Canada now need to operate on fuels with a maximum 0.1 percent sulphur content. Since the implementation of Emission Control Areas (ECAs) on January 1, 2015, ships entering waters in the Baltic Sea; the North Sea; the North American ECA, including most of the U.S. and Canadian coast, as well as the French overseas collectivities of St. Pierre and Miquelon; and the U.S. Caribbean ECA, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands Sea had to use fuels with up to 0.1% sulphur content. Today, Shell Marine Products (SMP) introduced Shell Alexia S3, its solution for large vessels with two-stroke engines entering into waters where the revised emission control area (ECA) regulations will come into force on January 1, 2015. Shell Marine Contracted to Lubricate MSC Ships

Amongst the latest listing of US Department of Defense, Navy, contracts Shell Marine Products US, Houston, Texas, is being awarded a $14,953,192 modification under a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (N00033-13-D-8020). The contract is for the supply and related services of lubricant oil products for the Engineering Directorate of the Military Sealift Command and other government agencies in need of lubricant oil supplies and related services. Work will be performed worldwide and is expected to be completed May 4, 2015. If all options are exercised, work will continue through May 2018. No funds will be obligated at the time of award.

Shell Launches Breakthrough Engine Oil

Shell scientists developed Shell Alexia S4 based on their unique 20 year understanding of oil stress –the factors which degrade lubricants. Its unique combination of additives makes it more resistant to these stresses.

Shell today launched Shell Alexia S4, its most innovative marine engine oil in a generation. Unlike conventional cylinder oils, it can be used across a wide range of vessel and engine types, fuel specifications, loads and climates– from the Antarctic to the Amazon to the Suez Canal. This means vessels no longer need to carry multiple oils. Shell Alexia S4 also works effectively at any vessel speed, including slow and ultra slow– especially important to modern ships that have to vary speeds to reduce fuel consumption and meet strict timetables.

Lubricant Technology Proven Tough Under Fire

When Texaco, now represented in the marine lubricants market by FAMM (Fuel and Marine Marketing), launched Taro 40 XL 40, the lubricant was designed to address pressing field problems in medium speed engines. Three years later FAMM is in a position to evaluate the performance in a large number of engines and to compare the field results with competitive lubricants. The pressing problems arose from a series of engine design and fuel processing changes. Although aimed at improving engine efficiency and making savings, the changes resulted in a series of difficulties. The best known are engine blackening, undercrown deposits, piston head corrosion, fouling of purifier heaters, increased oil consumption, base number depletion, oil scraper ring clogging and increased piston deposits.

Shell Marine Products Wins MSC Contract

Shell Marine Products (US) Company (SMP) has been awarded a Department of Defense contract to support more than 150 government-owned ships in the U.S. Navy's Military Sealift Command (MSC) fleet worldwide. The company competed for the right to supply marine lubricants and provide waste oil disposal services and related engineering support services. The contract value is approximately $8.6 million and work will be performed in various locations around the world for a period of one year, starting January 1, 2005. The contract represents a significant achievement for the growth aspirations of SMP. It includes four one-year options, which if exercised, would bring the total cumulative estimated value of this contract to approximately $46.5 million.

SMP Expands Ops in Mobile, Ala.

Shell Marine Products (SMP), the global supplier of marine fuels, lubricants and services, announced the start-up of its bunker fuels operations in Mobile, Ala. The company already has a strong business base in the USA Gulf Coast region, supplying bunker fuels and lubricants, and has expanded its geographic coverage to offer fuel oil, gas oil and lubricants to customers in Mobile. Shell Marine Products has fuel oil storage facilities in Mobile Harbor located at Radcliff/Economy Terminal. The company has also secured privileged access to the only double-hull bunker barge in the region to facilitate all fuel oil deliveries. With over 1,000 ships calling Mobile harbor each year, the region is an interesting bunkering market.

Oil Giants To Offer Marine Fuels Site

BP Amoco Plc., Royal Dutch/Shell, Texaco Inc., and Chevron Corp. are developing an Internet site allowing energy companies to buy and sell fuel for ships. The companies said the site (www.OceanConnect.com) would be up and running by the second quarter of this year, marking the latest in a series of projects by energy companies aiming to jump into e-commerce.In the past week Shell, Chevron, and Norway's state-run Statoil have all unveiled separate Internet ventures in an effort to save costs. OceanConnect.com will provide users with up-to-the-minute market and weather information and feature an auction site and e-mail-enabled transactions for purchase and sale of marine fuels and services, the company said.
