OSD Rolls Out New Harbor Tug Design
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has launched a new tug design as part of its expanding portfolio of fuel-efficient vessels. The 390 gt Azistern 2870 harbor tug has a hard chine hull form which optimizes energy-saving during transit and results in a very low wash. It has a bollard pull of 70 metric tons and a maximum speed of 12 knots. Providing accommodation for six persons, it has an overall length of 28.3 m, and a breadth of 11.5 m. The Azistern 2870 has been designed with multiple deck equipment options, the installation of which are dependent on specific end-user preference.
Deltamarin Joins GTT for LNG-Powered Ship Designs
Finnish ship designer Deltamarin, part of AVIC Group, together with France's Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT), an engineering company involved in membrane containment systems for transport and storage of LNG, has studied the use of membrane-type tanks on cargo and passenger vessels. Three offshore, ship and tug design and technical consulting companies have joined forces to provide a new one-stop resource for oil companies, offshore operators, tug owners, ports and shipyards. OSD Opens China Design Office
The Offshore Ship Designers group has opened a design office in . Initially staffed with six naval architects it will provide design resources to OSD’s European partners and also provide Asian shipyards with innovative tug and offshore support vessel designs. Intergraph, LR to Team on Ship Interface
Intergraph Corporation reached an agreement with Lloyd's Register to build an interface between Intergraph's IntelliShip multi-discipline ship design software, and the Lloyd's Register assessment applications, RulesCalc and ShipRight SDA. The interface will result in significantly greater efficiencies in the classification process for Lloyd's Register classed ships. IntelliShip coupled with this new interface will improve the overall ship design, certification, construction and commissioning process. Shipyards and ship designers can readily check the model created in IntelliShip against Lloyd's Register's classification rules, eliminating redundant modeling and reducing errors.
Offshore Ship Designer Sets up in Singapore
IJmuiden-based Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) has opened a design office in Singapore. The office will provide a local liaison point for customers building ships in Asia which were designed in the Dutch and UK offices of OSD, and also provide a local solution for design projects for companies based in Singapore. “We already have a successful design and newbuilding supervision office in Shanghai,” said Michiel Wijsmuller, managing director of OSD. “But as Singapore is rapidly strengthening as a hub for offshore activities, it is important for us to have a company there.
New Hull Structure Analysis Software
The Korean Register (KR) released SeaTrust-HullScan, a software solution to analyze and appraise a vessel’s hull structure in accordance with the new harmonized common structural rules (CSR-H). SeaTrust–HullScan is a new ship design support program that enables ship designers and ship builders to accurately apply IACS CSR-H and all subsequent amendments when designing and constructing a vessel. SeaTrust–HullScan was developed in-house and has been rigorously verified with the major Korean shipyards.
Aveva Element Analysis for Shipbuilders
Aveva (LSE:AVV) announced the release of Aveva Hull Finite Element Modeller, a new addition to the Aveva Marine portfolio which accelerates and simplifies the stress analysis of ship structures. Ship designers use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to ensure that hull structures comply with strength criteria and achieve low levels of vibration for maximum passenger comfort. OSD Appoints Technical Director
Offshore Ship Designers (OSD) strengthened its design teams by appointing Andrew Richards as Technical Director of OSD-IMT, its subsidiary. He was born in where he trained and worked as a naval architect before moving to the in 2007. Since then he has worked as a naval architect at OSD's Montrose office. His responsibilities include increasing productivity through training and better organization, maintaining client relationships, ensuring the quality of OSD services and identifying future areas of expansion.

Interferry Welcomes IMO Decision on LNG Fuel Tank Placement
Interferry has welcomed a decision at last week’s IMO Maritime Safety Committee meeting (MSC94) setting out rules for the location of fuel tanks on LNG-powered ships, a decision that the trade association said will safeguard further development of the LNG option. Following concerted cross industry coordination, member states agreed a way forward that offers impact protection of the tanks in the event of collision or grounding while avoiding the potentially prohibitive requirements of proposals previously under discussion. Until now the IMO’s efforts to avoid damage to LNG tanks and the consequent fire hazard have focused on placement of the tanks according to a mix of prescriptive rules and sophisticated calculation models…
Vietnam Receives New Ship Technology
The Viet Nam Ship Buiding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) with assistance from the Ship Design and Research Centre (CTO) of Poland, opened a training course for 30 local ship designers in Ha Noi on Oct. 13, according to a report on www.vnanet.com. Under the course, Polish experts will transfer advanced shipbuilding technology to the Vietnamese engineers, who will have opportunities to access the most sophisticated ship designing software. As part of the three-month course, local trainees will join Polish experts in designing the 104,000-ton Aframax ship. Vinashin set itself a target of being capable of designing 60,000-tonne ships by 2008. To that aim, the corporation has sent a group of designers to Poland to study the building of 100,000-tonne vessels.
MAN Diesel & Turbo, MM-Offshore Partner

SDARI Inks Agreement for INTERSCHALT Loading Software
INTERSCHALT maritime systems AG, a maritime software and services provider of loading computers on board containerships, signed a cooperation agreement with the Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) in Shanghai for the provision of MACS3 loading software for containerships, bulk carriers and tankers built in Chinese shipyards using SDARI designs. MACS3 provides INTERSCHALT with an approx. 65% market share of the approx. 6,000 container ships currently in existence worldwide.
ClassNK and Tribon Offer Different Options
The Japanese classification society ClassNK and Tribon Solutions offer time savings in the early phases of ship design through a new software interface. As part of a program to facilitate cooperation between ship designers and classification societies through digital data transfer, the Japanese classification society ClassNK and software provider Tribon Solutions have developed a direct interface between the Tribon Shipbuilding system and ClassNK PrimeShip. This new capability offers efficient data transfer and cost reductions in the early ship design phases. As a result of this integrated process, ship designers will be able to examine multiple design alternatives in a shorter time allowing more detailed analysis of structural strength and steel weight.

Offshore Ship Designers Call for Greener Designs
Offshore vessel designer, Offshore Ship Designers (OSD), says going green is no longer just an expensive option, and it is no longer just about containing noxious emissions and oil spills. A global focus on carbon dioxide emission reduction means that going green is both a challenge and a business opportunity for offshore service vessel (OSV) operators. Writing in its regular newsletter Design Waves, Neil Patterson, managing director of IMT Marine Consultants, part of OSD, says, “The public wants cuts in greenhouse gases, and has zero tolerance for marine pollution. Expect to see oil companies responding by going green across the board. There are already signs that oil companies will give preference to chartering ships which produce fewer carbon emissions.
Offshore Ship Designers Series
Three recent deliveries highlight the series of offshore support vessels designed by the Offshore Ship Designers group. The VOS Pathfinder completes a series of five basic IMT955 Standby vessels built at Astilleros Zamakona, Spain, for Vroon Offshore Services. The 180 ft loa VOS Pathfinder was contracted in October to HRL Centrica for a five-year period working in the Morecambe Bay gas field. Also recently delivered are the VOS Pioneer and VOS Prospector, the first two of ten IMT 955-L Field Support Vessels building at Astilleros Zamakona, Spain for Vroon Offshore.
China PSV Ship Design Contract for UK's OSD
Offshore Ship Designers UK division OSD-IMT has been awarded a contract to supply the design for a modified version of its IMT 982 Platform Supply Vessel to be built at the new shipyard facility of Honghua Offshore Oil & Gas Equipment in Jiangsu, China. The contract is the result of increased marketing and technical collaboration between OSD group companies. It is contracted through OSD-Shanghai, with OSD-Singapore providing design engineering technical support to OSD Shanghai for design modification.
Wiernicki: Class' Move into Ship Design "Dangerous"
ABS President and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki has warned that a move into ship design by some class societies creates a fundamental conflict of interest with their role as independent providers of safety approval and certification.
