Austal Wins New Ferry Order from Molslinjen

Perth-based ship manufacturer, Austal has penned a contract for the design and construction of a 115 meter, high-speed catamaran for Molslinjen of Denmark.The contract worth A$136 million is a follow-up order to the 109 meter high-speed catamaran Express 4, delivered to Molslinjen in January 2019, the new Auto Express 115 will be the largest ferry (by volume) ever built by Austal.The vessel will be fitted with a new generation of medium speed engines that are LNG compatible, and is designed with the potential to upgrade to LNG fuel in the future.Construction will commence in the third quarter of 2020 and delivery of the vessel will be in the first quarter of 2022.

Korea Shipbuilders Take Firmer Stance on Business Ethics

Korea’s big three shipbuilders are committed to making a fresh start with regard to business ethics in 2014 after getting hit with bribery scandals in 2013, reports the Korea Joong Ang Daily. According to the Korea Joong Ang Daily,  Hyundai Heavy Industries, the nation’s largest ship manufacturer, held an “ethics management resolution” event recently at its headquarters in Ulsan during a management strategy seminar. HHI Chairman Lee Jae-sung and more than 150 high-ranking executives, including CEOs from affiliates, signed a pledge to pursue ethical management.

Garware Offshore Plans Shipbuilding Yard with Norway Firm

Mumbai-based Garware Offshore Services Ltd., a company that offers ships for oil and gas exploration activities, plans to enter the shipbuilding business by setting up an exclusive facility for making offshore support vessels. This shipbuilding yard will be a joint venture with Norway-based ship manufacturer Havyard Leirvik AS, promoted by Havyard Group AS. Havyard Leirvik is a leader in making offshore ships, ice-breaking ships and other types of specialized vessels. According to the Shipyards Association of India, shipbuilding will entail an investment of about $76.1m by 2017. Reportedly, the venture could be 50:50, though nothing has been finalized.

As a natural consequence of Turkey being a peninsula located at a strategically central position close to many wealthy European markets, Turkey’s growth in shipping construction has outdone all of its global rivals in the last four years, growing 360 percent. The Black Sea region, has been the main beneficiary from this unprecedented upswing.

Korean Shipbuilder Considers Project in Khanh Hoa

A South Korean ship manufacturer is mulling a project to develop a large-scale shipyard in the coastal central province of Khanh Hoa that should be able to build giant vessels of up to 400,000 DWT, a local official said. A source from the provincial Service of Planning and Investment said South Korea’s STX Shipbuilding Co., a member of STX Group, has proposed to develop a shipyard costing $500m at Van Phong Bay. The proposal has received preliminary support from the provincial government and its relevant agencies. Nguyen Xuan Long, director of the planning and investment service, said that the province and its agencies were putting more efforts on attracting more foreign investment.
