Shipowners' Club on Mayflower Autonomous Ship
The Shipowners' Club has revelead details about Mayflower Autonomous Ship project (MAS), which is an innovative new venture to design, build and sail the world’s first fully autonomous vessel across the Atlantic Ocean. The project’s name commemorates the anniversary of the Pilgrim Father’s voyage from Plymouth, UK to Plymouth in the New World (USA) on the original Mayflower in 1620. To mark the anniversary, marine tech company MSubs, Plymouth University and charitable research foundation Promare, are developing a 21-metre autonomous vessel based on a classic Oyster hull.
Canada Announces Shipbuilding Teams for Joint Support Ship Project
Michael M Fortier, Canadian Minister of Public Works and Government Services announced that two teams led by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Canada Inc. and SNC-Lavalin ProFac Inc. have been selected to receive contracts for the project definition phase of the Joint Support Ships project. The teams will each be awarded an identical contract of $12.5 million to complete proposals to design and build the ships, as well as to provide long-term in-service support. The Joint Support Ships will be designed to replace the Canadian Forces’ auxiliary oiler replenishment vessels. The Joint Support Ships will support and enforce domestic maritime security, as well as contribute to Canada’s humanitarian and peacekeeping missions.
Japan Dockyard Introduces Intergraph SmartMarine
Shin Kurushima Dockyard Company has introduced Intergraph's 3D CAD/CAM software into the production phase of its ship projects. SKDY had chosen to standardize on SmartMarine 3D and successfully demonstrated its use of the industry-leading solution with a steel-cutting ceremony. With Intergraph's continuous enhancement of SmartMarine 3D, the solution has out-of-the-box content and functionality to support ship production. Today, SKDY has successfully incorporated its specific requirements into SmartMarine 3D, which are fully automated across its production processes. With support from Intergraph, SKDY is the first shipyard in Japan to implement SmartMarine 3D for the production stage, using its own built-in, automated rules.
Australian Gov’t Pushes for Ship Project
Thales has submitted a bid to the Commonwealth to build two amphibious warships at shipyards on Australia's east coast, including at Sydney's Garden Island. Wilhelmsen Large Project Loading at Huangpu
The logistics department of Wilhelmsen Ships Service in Shanghai recently completed a large project loading an air-filter system for shipment to India. Wilhelmsen Ships Service was tasked with loading 39 packages, weighing a total of 303 tons (2400 cubic metres), valued at about $2m. The company’s responsibility included vessel chartering, export customs clearance, picking up the cargo and trucking into the terminal, storage, haulage and handling. The air filter system was loaded at Guangzhou on board M/V Balboa/1004, and will be discharged at Mumbai, India. It was manufactured in China by Guangzhou Delsun Steel Structure Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Huayu Steel structure Co., Ltd, and will be consigned to a large heavy electrical engineering company in India.
Casino Cruise Ship Financing Ready
Viva Gaming & Resorts has reported that all financing required for the company's Texas Treasure casino cruise ship project in Corpus Christi, Texas is now fully secured and in place. The Texas Treasure, presently the only casino ship in the state of Texas, will operate twice daily cruises, each five to six hours in duration, seven days per week from Harbour Island, with its inaugural cruise and soft opening set for Friday evening, September 15 as previously announced. "Despite numerous and unexpected delays, we've moved at an extremely fast pace to ensure this project opened on schedule," Viva Gaming President and Chief Executive Officer, Marty Gross said.

S. Korea Navy Chief Quizzed About Salvage Ship Absence
The state audit agency has interrogated the chief of the Navy over a faulty Navy salvage ship that failed to participate in the national rescue operation for the ferry Sewol that sank off the southwest coast in April according to an unnamed source cited by Yonhap News Agency. The interrogation of Navy Chief Adm. Hwang Ki-chul is part of the Board of Audit and Inspection's probe into the military's project to construct the first South Korean-built salvage ship Tongyeong, according to the source.

Canada to Fund Short Sea Shipping Project
The Honorable Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, on behalf of the Honorable Ed Fast, Canada’s Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, and Mr. Robert Bennie, Chair of Nanaimo Port Authority, today announced funding for a short sea shipping project in British Columbia, further bolstering Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative (APGCI). Under APGCI, Canada’s government is contributing up to $4.65 million to modernize the Nanaimo Assembly Wharf area and rehabilitate an aging dock that has not been active for over 10 years due to its condition. Sener and Gumeco Sign a Foran System Contract
SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas, S.A. and Guangzhou Marine Engineering Corporation (GUMECO) have recently signed a contract for the right to use the FORAN System in the facilities from GUMECO. The scope of supply covers all the disciplines and corresponding training for GUMECO personnel. Training has been completed and now GUMECO has already started to use FORAN for new design projects. The FORAN System has thus become the main design toolset at GUMECO, and will be used for their future ship projects. The contract represents a successful move forward for FORAN System in the growing Chinese Shipbuilding Industry.
NYK Line PCTC Vessels Verified Environmentally Correct
Japan's NYK Line say they have received certification from classification society Lloyd's Register (LR) for two of its PCTCs (pure car and truck carrier) for the disclosure of accurate numerical values based on proper methods of collecting environmental data, including the handling of onboard waste and the emission of greenhouse gases (CO2). The certification was provided by third-party certifier Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Limited (LRQA). The certification confirmed the accurate disclosure of data for about 20 environmental indicators composing the Clean Shipping Index (CSI).

Alion Awarded $5.6m Contract Option
The Naval Sea Systems Command has exercised a $5.6m contract option for Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, to provide acquisition management support to its Program Executive Office Ships Acquisition Management (PEO Ships AM) Directorate. The option, which runs from June 1, 2007 through June 6, 2008, covers ship project directive (SPD) execution planning and financial execution; government furnished equipment (GFE) acquisition, delivery management and production management; configuration management; program management and Lean Six Sigma support; and business and financial planning. The contract runs for a total of five years, including a one-year base period and four, one-year options.
