The future of shipping is here, and it will not surprise industry observers to see Norway in the pole position as autonomous vessels enter commercial operations. Norway has long been on the bleeding edge of shipping innovation. In 2015, the worldâs first battery electric car ferry entered operation in Norwayâs deepest and longest fjord, Sognefjord.The ferry, MV Ampere, resulted from a government initiative and was a catalyst for innovation in the industry. Now, Norway is expected to equip some 200 additional berths with zero emission technologies before 2025.
WinGD Elected Joins LNG Marine Fuel Institute
Switzerland-based low-speed gas and diesel marine engines marine manufacturer Winterthur Gas & Diesel (WinGD) has become a member of the LNG Marine Fuel Institute.WinGD, the company involved in the design and development of the two-stroke X-DF LNG engines, is highly invested in the advancement of the shipping industry through LNG as fuel.More than 150 engines of the new WinGD X-DF type are ordered, under construction or in operations, said a press release from the company.WinGDâs engine design history dates back to the late 1800s when they were founded as the Sulzer Diesel Engine business. Their recent success in the LNG market is evidence of their commitment to looking ahead to the future.

Anthony Luzzatto Gardner, former US Ambassador to the European Union and Visiting Fellow at the College of Europe, will be the guest speaker at the European Shipping Week Gala Dinner, to be held on Wednesday 1st March 2017 at the Steigenberger Wiltcher Hotel in Brussels. Ambassador Gardner, who has dedicated more than 20 years of his career to US-European affairs, will speak on the important subject of âUS-EU Relations: Looking Back, Looking Forwardâ. IACS and European Commission Hold Joint Workshop to Kick Off European Shipping Week
The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) held a joint workshop in Brussels with the European Commission to kick off European Shipping Week, the association announced today. The joint workshop featured speakers from the European Commission's Transport, the Environment and the Climate Action departments. IACS speakers covered topics that included LNG as a fuel, the importance of harmonious regulations, and new IACS post Panamax Containership structural regulation.
European Parliament Backs European Shipping Week
European Shipping Week has been granted the European Parliamentâs official patronage by its President, Martin Schulz. Both the European Commission and the European Parliament have now actively expressed their support for the week-long event which will be held in Brussels during March 2-6, 2015. First 2-Stroke Gas Engine Taking Quantum 1-Stroke
London: By introducing a new solution for LNG-fuelled ships, DNV and MAN Diesel & Turbo are taking the Quantum concept ship one stroke further. Both the machinery and the hull design and arrangement have been improved. A year ago, DNV launched its container ship concept â Quantum. This concept ship was designed to stir up a debate about shipping innovation. MAN Diesel & Turbo responded very positively, and over the past few months the engine manufacturer and the class society have worked closely together to move the concept one step nearer to becoming an actual ship.
