It is not business as usual in the world where we do business. Things are changing. Even regulations themselves are changing from less prescriptive in nature to more performance-based. As Chairman, President and CEO of a global classification and technology-centric company that operates in 70 countries with 5,000 employees, I am continually assessing the impact of these changes on the capabilities ABS needs to fulfill its mission and maintain its leadership position in the maritime, offshore and government industries it serves. A Case for Maritime Cyber Security Capability

As I waited for my daughter’s decision regarding the peanuts she was contemplating, an Economist magazine headline grabbed my attention: Why Computers Will Never be Safe. We were in one of those unexceptional airport newsstands waiting for our flight, returning to reality from vacation, and the subject was cyber security. It was April, and the subject had consumed me since the previous summer as our company developed a potentially disruptive cyber security management platform for the maritime industry.

DNV Approves "Pay as You Sail" Charts Option

Global chart distributor Nautisk has confirmed DNV approval for its Neptune Pay As You Sail (PAYS) Solution. PAYS enables users to access global ENCs for use with onboard ECDIS systems, while only paying for those that are actually used. Peter J Pran, Nautisk Project Manager said, “Despite a positive market outlook, demands on shipowners and vessel operators to make cost savings and optimize operational efficiency are continuing to increase. “Our PAYS solution gives both shore-based and onboard teams access to any number of ENCs that may be required for one particular trading route.

Pirates Beware – US Navy to Test Robotic Drones

Navy unmanned aircraft will be able to distinguish small pirate boats from other vessels when an Office of Naval Research (ONR)-funded sensor starts airborne tests this summer, officials said. Called the Multi-Mode Sensor Seeker (MMSS), the sensor is a mix of high-definition cameras, mid-wave infrared sensors and laser-radar (LADAR) technology. It will be placed on a robotic helicopter called Fire Scout. Transas Marine Installs a Vessel Traffic Management System in Togo

Transas Mediterranean in cooperation with its local partner SERAMAR have delivered a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) to Port Autonome de Lomé. The System is installed in Lomé Port - the main point of exchange for the country. During the tender process Transas offered a turnkey VTMS solution that was in full compliance with the terms of the tender and international guidelines for port VTMS. The System is intended to monitor and regulate the maritime traffic flow in order to improve safety conditions in the area.

Transas Appoints New Sales Manager

Transas has appointed Henry Nel, as the Sales Manager for Shore- Based Systems in the USA. In his position, Henry will be responsible for increasing the sales of Transas VTS and coastal surveillance systems in North America, providing support on AIS to all Transas offices around the world and giving input to the design team on AIS related products. Moreover, Henry will be in charge of establishing a second Transas office in the USA to improve customer’ support in the regions geographically remote from the TM USA main office in Lynnwood, WA. In addition to the strong theoretical background in Electronic Engineering (Honours Degree from the University of Pretoria), Henry has a 10-years hands-on experience as a System Engineer.
