Shoreham Welcomes Maiden Barrett Cargo

UK's cargo handling port on the South Coast Shoreham Port has welcome the first shipment of steel to the Barrett Steel site, following the assignment of the lease for the steel premises at the Port.Barrett Steel, who are the largest independent steel stockholder in the UK, had their first cargo vessel arrive at the Port, it said.Dave Bunker, General Manager Operations at Shoreham Port said “The vessel MV Jevenau arrived Sunday carrying 878 bundles of steel sheet piles weighing 3,620 tonnes, with operations beginning the following morning.”The ship came through the Port’s Prince Phillip lock gates system, which replaces water in the canal via powerful impounding pumps that pump around 120…

UK's Shoreham Welcomes Home Registered Vessel

Shoreham Port UK, claimed to be UK's number 1 scallop port, welcome home registered fishing vessel ‘Flowing Stream’ following a significant refit that began in the spring of 2018.Originally built in the year 2000, the vessel was flagged in from Belgium where it was previously registered to be renovated and renewed to bring it up to new vessel standards. Flowing Stream will join a long line of fishing vessels registered at Shoreham Port that date back to the 13th Century.Flowing Stream is one of the many scalloping vessels that regularly land in the Port each year, with the Marine Management Organisation’s recently published report revealing that in 2018, 18% of scallops landed in the UK by UK fishing vessels were landed at Shoreham Port, making it the number one scallop Port in the UK.

New Tug for Shoreham Port Authority

A new 16-meter harbor tug has completed its delivery voyage from Macduff Shipyards to Shoreham on the south coast of England.The new tug, Acamar, was designed by Macduff Ship Design for Shoreham Port Authority, inspired by the Eileen Mcloughlin hull and customized to suit the port’s busy operations schedule and narrowed in order to fit through lock gates. Shoreham Port supporting Women in Maritime

Shoreham Port is part of a high-level Taskforce, established by Maritime UK, to work collaboratively with other businesses in the industry to promote women in the maritime sector. The first meeting took place on 21st February in London and was very well attended. The Taskforce aims to identify practical steps to increase the number of women in the industry and is committed to addressing fairness, equality and inclusion within the sector. The UK Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani MP joined the first meeting, demonstrating government support for the initiative. Nusrat said “This Taskforce will be crucial in opening up the wealth of career opportunities in the maritime industry to women around the country.

Women in Maritime: New UK Taskforce Established

Setting out to increase fairness, equality and inclusion within the maritime sector, Maritime UK has established a Women in Maritime Taskforce, a move welcomed by the U.K.’s new Maritime Minister, Nusrat Ghani MP. “I am delighted to see Maritime UK taking action to attract more women into our maritime industries, and I welcome this taskforce as an important first step,” said Ghani, who is only the second woman to hold the Department for Transport portfolio for the U.K.’s £40 billion maritime sector.

20-Year Development plan underway at Shoreham Port

It’s been a busy start to 2017 at Shoreham Port with imports and exports flowing steadily through, new recruits joining the team and a number of development projects under way. Recently, long-term plans at the Port have been in the spotlight. A framework for development for the Port over the next 20 years is set out in the Port’s Masterplan and in December the Masterplan underwent a ‘light touch review’ to bring the plans right up to date. The Masterplan includes details of how the Port plans to meet its objectives as an ‘Eco-Port’ and improve the sustainability of all the trading and business activity taking place there. Key objectives include maintaining EcoPort status and continuing to be an important location for renewable energy.

New Executive Appointments at Shoreham Port

Shoreham Port welcomes to its team; Darren Bridle (Transport and Logistics Administrator), Helen English (Property Manager), Doug Martin (Tug Master) and David Cornelius (Pilot). Shoreham Port staff given paediatric first aid training

With over half of Shoreham Port's employees already trained in adult emergency first aid the port offering paediatric first aid training has enabled individuals to feel more confident about delivering first aid outside of the workplace, especially if they have children or babies in their family. The Port welcomed back First Aid Co-ordinators Eddie Seaborne MBE and Karyn Ashcroft from St Vincent College this week to deliver paediatric first aid training to a number of port staff and their friends and family. Eddie commented “The Emergency First Aid at Work and How to Save a Child/Baby's Life was well received by all. Karyn added “We had parents and grandparents learning life skills in CPR, choking and bleeding of young children and babies.

Shoreham Port, Possability People Team Up to deliver Recruit Ability Event

This week, Shoreham Port welcomed a group of people from Possability People to the Port as part of a new project called Recruit Ability. Possability People are a Brighton based charity set up in 1981 to support and involve disabled people to have equal rights, and a voice and control over issues affecting their lives. They provide services in Brighton, Hove and East and West Sussex. In 2016 Possability People launched a new project called ‘Recruit Ability’ working with the Brighton Chamber of Commerce. Recruit Ability helps disabled people fulfil their potential and enhance the businesses that employ them. The project is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Shoreham Port Engineers Complete Lock Gate Maintenance

On the 18 th October, the Port’s Engineering team successfully replaced the existing 1.8m diameter sluice valve at the south east corner of our Prince Phillip Lock with a refurbished spare as part of their on-going regime of programmed maintenance. Site preparation work and detailed planning had been carried out for several weeks prior to the changeover to ensure a successful outcome and to minimise disruption to the flow of ships through the lock. Following motivational bacon sandwiches and team briefings, work began at 4.30am to disconnect and lift the eight metre tall valve assembly up and out of the sluice pit where it had been working tirelessly for more than 30 years.

Shoreham Port Ensures Night Navigational Safety

Shoreham Port has been working closely with the local angling community and the Local Independent Sea Anglers (LISA) to improve navigational safety for vessels entering the Port at night. vessels entering the Port. The change follows feedback from vessel Masters, highlighting that bright lights are blinding their vision as they approach the harbour entrance. Using a blue light significantly reduces this issue and helps vessel Masters identify anglers as they approach the harbour. During a meeting in October, LISA expressed their full support of the blue light initiative and are encouraging their members to adhere to the new request. LISA has around 200 members in the Sussex area and a number of the members are regular users of the West Breakwater.

Shoreham Port, Arcadis win BB Award for Oil Seepage Investigation

The Award, for the ‘Best Scoping or Operation of a Site Investigation’ was presented to Tony Parker, Director of Engineering at Shoreham Port and George Flower, Technical Director at Arcadis at a prestigious awards ceremony in London last week. The mysterious smell and oil seepage were discovered to be caused by an oily substance seeping out onto the beach at extreme low water and this was discovered to have originated from the giant coal gas works that once occupied the Portslade end of the Port.
