USCG Suspends Search for the 2 Migrants
The Coast Guard suspended its search Wednesday at 3 p.m. for two missing Cuban migrants in the vicinity of Caesar Creek, Florida, to Haulover Inlet, Florida. "Our Coast Guard men and women worked tirelessly looking for the two missing Cuban migrants; however, despite our best efforts we have been unable to locate them, and have decided to suspended the search," said Capt. Austin Gould, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami. "This illegal migrant venture demonstrates just how dangerous taking to the sea in unseaworthy vessels can be. In total, 11 lives were saved by Coast Guard and partner agency rescue crews. Search and rescue crews completed 27 search patterns covering approximately 3,145 square miles over a 55 hour period.
Final Four MHCs Decommission
A lone bugler played as Union Jacks and national ensigns were lowered marking the end of service for the final four Osprey-class coastal mine hunters. USS Kingfisher (MHC 56), USS Cormorant (MHC 57), USS Blackhawk (MHC 58) and USS Shrike (MHC 62) were decommissioned Dec. 1, during a ceremony aboard Naval Station Ingleside, Texas. "Just as a commissioning signals a bright future," said Lt. Cmdr. The ceremony also marked the date the ships' names would be struck from the registry of active Navy ships. And, their ensigns would fly no more, stated Rear Adm.
SWM Wins Multi-Ship Multi-Option Contract
United Defense Industries, Inc. subsidiary, Southwest Marine (SWM), has been awarded a contract from the Navy for pre-production planning for the repair, alteration and dry docking of the USS SHRIKE (MHC 62). The contract follows SWM's current 5-year contract for repairs to the Mine Countermeasure (MCM) class of vessels. Work on the ship is scheduled to start on May 26, 2004, and complete on August 20, 2004. The last availability is scheduled to complete in August of 2008. This award is issued as part of a multi-ship, multi-option contract expected to help stabilize the current SWM workforce in Ingleside. If the Navy exercises all options, the total contract amount could exceed $30 million.
Eagle Bulk Shipping Takes Delivery of Supramax Drybulk Vessel
Eagle Bulk Shipping, Inc., a global marine transportation company specializing in the Supramax segment of the dry bulk shipping industry,announced that it has taken delivery of the Shrike, a 2003 built 53,343 dwt Supramax dry bulk vessel. The Shrike was acquired as part of a three vessel transaction announced on February 28, 2007. The Shrike will immediately commence a 24-27 month charter at a rate of $24,600/day. The charterer has an option to extend the charter period by 12-14 months at a rate of $25,600/day.
