Autonomous Workboats: The Future is Now

Sea Machines is bringing autonomous self-driving systems to the world of workboats. At an impressive virtual reality demonstration seen late last year and then again at a frigid, late winter visit to the Boston waterfront, the future of workboat technology became all too evident for this writer. The late George Allen, former head coach of the Washington Redskins football team perhaps said it best when he coined the phrase, “The future is now.” If so, then Michael Johnson, the founder of Sea Machines Robotics has brought that reality to the marine industry. The technology company targets the emerging market of autonomous marine vessels. That’s not some sort of futuristic vision; those capabilities are here, now.

A2SEA Signs for Dudgeon

Dudgeon Offshore Wind Limited has awarded the Charter for WTG transport and installation to A2SEA A/S. A2SEA shall provide the jack-up vessel Sea Installer including 24/7 marine crew and crane operators for transport and installation of the 67 Siemens 6.0-154 wind turbine generators (WTG). The charter covers project management, and design, procurement and installation of necessary sea fastening and grillage for the work. All lifting operations will be performed by the vessel crane under supervision of Siemens personnel. McIntosh Named CTruk Chairman

Composite high-speed craft designer and builder CTruk has appointed shipbuilding industry veteran Peter McIntosh OBE to succeed Andy White as chairman. McIntosh, the former executive director of VT Group PLC, holds experience of the marine and defense industries and will steer the innovative company through its next stage of growth, CTruk said. Statoil Awards Siemens Wind Farm Service Contracts

As operator, Statoil has awarded two contracts to Siemens plc for the engineering, supply, assembly, commissioning and service of 67 wind turbine generators for the Dudgeon Offshore Wind Farm project. The wind turbine generator (WTG) supply contract will cover engineering, procurement, assembly and offshore commissioning. Wind Farm Base Project Gets UK Local Green Light

Hull City Council’s Planning Committeehas given its consent to the proposed Green Port Hull facility following the submission of plans by Associated British Ports (ABP) and Siemens plc. The German manufacturer, which will invest about £80m, plans to have the site operational by 2014, in time to start making turbines ahead of the first UK Round 3 projects. PD Ports Appoints Legal Contracts Manager

PD Ports recently appointed Deborah McGargle as legal contracts manager, based at the Port’s Queen’s Square headquarters in Middlesbrough. McGargle, who joined PD Ports on February 17, has extensive experience in both the legal profession and within the industry, most notably with Siemens plc in South Tyneside, where she was legal advisor and company secretary.
