CTO in Focus: Henrik Stiesdal, Wind Power Pioneer

Wind power pioneer Henrik Stiesdal built his first wind turbine in 1978. It was one of Denmark’s first step towards becoming a wind energy powerhouse, with Stiesdal regularly at the helm. He’s now got wider climate initiatives in his sights, including industrializing floating offshore wind. He reflected with OE’s Elaine Maslin.By 2021, a total of 35 GW of offshore wind had been installed across the world. To meet global climate targets, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says that another 80 GW of it needs to be built per year by 2030.

New CEO, Co-CEO to Lead MHI Vestas Offshore Wind

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Vestas Wind Systems (Vestas) have appointed Philippe Kavafyan to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Lars Bondo Krogsgaard to Co-Chief Executive Officer (Co-CEO) of MHI Vestas Offshore Wind. The appointments will take effect on 1 April, 2018, and are made in accordance with the joint venture agreement's principle of changing its leadership every four years. Windea Leibniz Delivered to Bernhard Schulte

The newly built wind farm service vessel Windea Leibniz was delivered from Ulstein Verft to Bernhard Schulte Offshore and ICBC Leasing on February 28, and named March 2 at a ceremony in Ulsteinvik, Norway. Beginning in April, the vessel will work at the Sandbank wind farm in the German Bight for Siemens Wind Power Service to help ensure energy production from the site’s 72 wind turbines. DNV GL Certifies Siemens’ 8 MW Offshore Wind Turbine

DNV GL has assessed the market’s new offshore turbine in development and awarded Siemens Wind Power with the Prototype Certificate for its 8 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine SWT-8.0-154. The prototype certification confirms all relevant safety features on the turbine according to the Danish Executive Order BEK 73:2013 and IEC 61400-22, allowing installation of the prototype to demonstrate its performance. By erecting the turbine at the test centre for wind turbines in Østerild, Denmark, Siemens is able to perform the measurement campaign for the next phase of the type certification process which is crucial to bring the turbine to the market. “We are proud to have received the prototype certificate at this early stage, allowing us to install our SWT-8.0-154 prototype according to plan.

Windea La Cour Goes to Work

First Wind Turbine Installed at Gemini Offshore Wind Park

The first wind turbine has been installed at the Gemini offshore wind park, off the coast of the Netherlands. The wind park will be completed in 2017, and will supply 785,000 households with renewable energy. The SOV, Yno 309, currently under construction at Ulstein Verft, will be servicing this park. On February 16, 2016, the first wind turbine was installed by Van Oord at the Gemini Offshore Wind Park, and it will soon begin producing electricity. In the coming months, a total of 150 wind turbines will be installed 85 kilometers off the coast of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Tuco Debuts 10m Wind Farm Service Boat

Tuco Marine Group of Denmark discloses the newest vessel in the ProZero series of Fast Rescue Boats, Daughter Crafts and Workboats; The New 10m WIND FARM SERVICE BOAT. The new design is released shortly after Tuco won the order for two 11m Wind Farm Service Boats that have been ordered for the Two Ulstein X-stern vessels that German based Bernhard Schulte affiliate WINDEA Offshore GmbH, have ordered for their contract with Siemens Wind Power. The new 10m WIND FARM SERVICE BOAT is a dedicated service boat and crew transfer vessel, for offshore wind farms.

Belgium's Mega Wind Farm Starts to Take Shape

Belgium, in the Antwerp port area on the left bank of the Scheldt. In the first phase 15 wind turbines will be erected, enough to supply 35,000 Flemish households with green electricity. The ultimate ambition is to build anything from 40 to 50 turbines. European Offshore Wind Faces Make-or-break 2020 -Report

Wind power companies such as Vestas, Siemens and Dong need Europe's installed offshore capacity to more than double and costs to be cut by a fifth within five years to compete with other fuels, an industry report said on Tuesday. The Ernst & Young report described 2020 as a make-or-break year for the offshore wind power industry, which must install more than 20 gigawatts (GW) of capacity generating electricty for about 100 euros ($107) per megawatt-hour (MWh), against 140 euros now. "Failure to meet both these criteria will not see the offshore wind industry advance into 2030 and beyond," said the report issued on the first day of Europe's largest offshore wind conference in Copenhagen.

BSM Takes Management of Two SOVs

BSM is to take on the ship management of two new ULSTEIN SX175 Service Operation Vessels (SOVs), ordered as part of a WINDEA joint venture involving its parent company Bernhard Schulte. Both vessels are to be built at the Ulstein Verft shipyard in Norway and will be operated by Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement on a long-term charter contract for SIEMENS following their delivery in 2016 and 2017. Purpose-built to meet the needs of the offshore wind industry, the vessels will be 88m long by 18m wide with a top speed of 13.5 knots and capable of accommodating up to 109 people.

SMC to Provide Marine Coordination for Siemens

Specialist Marine Consultants Ltd (SMC) have been working with Siemens, providing offshore marine coordination for a fifth Siemens Wind Power construction project. The Butendiek offshore wind farm in the North Sea began construction in early 2014, and is due for completion mid-2015. SMC, based on the UK Yorkshire coast, have been working offshore undertaking marine coordination for the 80 turbine site. SMC provides specialist services to the offshore renewable and oil and gas sectors including HSE advisory services, marine coordination, client representation and vessel auditing.

First ‘round 3’ Wind Turbine Installed at Westermost Rough

The UK’s first commercial 6 megawatt (MW) wind turbine has been installed at the Westermost Rough wind farm, in a new landmark for renewable energy. The next generation machine, designed by Siemens and erected by DONG Energy, is the first of 35 at the 210MW North Sea project. It is hoped that the ‘round 3’ turbines, with their greater output, will help cut costs for the offshore wind sector. Duncan Clark, Westermost Rough programme director for Dong, said, “This is a major landmark in the construction phase of this project and its achievement is a great credit to the DONG Energy team and our supply chain partners. The Westermost Rough project is 50% owned by DONG Energy, whilst the Green Investment Bank and Marubeni revealed this week they are to refinance part of their 50% shareholding.

Siemens Wind Power Turbine Certified

Siemens Wind Power has received offshore prototype certification from GL Renewables Certification (GL RC) for testing its new 6 megawatt offshore wind turbine at DONG Energy's Gunfleet Sands III demonstration project in the UK. This will be the first offshore test of this new offshore wind turbine. Morten Pilgaard Rasmussen, head of research and development at Siemens Wind Power received the Prototype Certificate from Axel Dombrowski, GL RC's head of department machinery components and electrical engineering, at Siemens' R&D Headquarters in Brande, Denmark.

Principle Power Names WindFloat Partners

Dong Energy to Build Westermost Rough OWF

DONG Energy to build this offshore wind farm (OWF) located in the North Sea off the British east coast. The construction will represent a total investment of approximately EUR 1 billion including the construction of the transmission assets. When the wind farm goes into operation, the transmission assets will be sold to an offshore transmission operator, as required by UK regulation. Westermost Rough will consist of 35 turbines from Siemens Wind Power, each of 6.0 megawatt, with a total capacity of 210 megawatt. It will be able to supply CO2-free power corresponding to the annual power consumption of almost 210,000 British households.

GL Certify Siemens' Prototype Offshore Wind Turbine

GL Renewables Certification rendered to Siemens for its new 6-megawatt offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power’s new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine was carried out in Østerild, Denmark earlier this month. Siemens Wind Power developed its new 6-megawatt wind turbine for use at sea. The direct-drive wind turbine is equipped with what are currently the world's longest rotor blades – each blade measures 75 meters in length. With a record rotor diameter of 154 meters, each SWT-6.0-154 turbine can produce 25 million kilowatt hours of clean electricity in offshore locations, enough to supply 6,000 households.

Certification for Siemens SWT 6.0-154 Wind Turbine Prototype

GL Renewables Certification has provided Siemens Wind Power prototype certification for its new six MW offshore wind turbine SWT-6.0-154. The prototype certification is a prerequisite for the testing of the turbine. Field testing of Siemens Wind Power's new 154-meter rotor for the six-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine began in Østerild, Denmark, on October 6, 2012. Bent Weibel, Head of Product Integrity at Siemens Wind Power, received the Prototype Certificate from Mike Woebbeking, Vice President of GL Renewables Certification, at the GL Group's Head Office in Hamburg on October 8th, 2012. Denmark Receives Power from Anholt Offshore Wind Farm

The first CO2-free power is now being fed into the Danish power grid from Anholt offshore wind farm. On its completion next year, the farm, with its total capacity of 400 MW, will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm and will deliver power equivalent to the consumption of 400,000 Danish households. OSBIT Power's MaXccess System Completes Offshore Trials

OSBIT Power (OP), Siemens Wind Power and Statoil announced that they have successfully completed offshore trials of OP’s offshore wind turbine access system, MaXccess. The trials were conducted with the backing of Siemens Wind Power and Statoil, at the Hywind Demo floating offshore wind turbine off the coast of Norway. MaXccess was installed on the wind farm service vessel Bayard 3, operated by Fred Olsen Windcarrier, for the duration of the trials, conducted over the past month, from Statoil’s Hywind operations base at Skudeneshavn, Norway.

MacGregor Cranes from Cargotec for Windmill Park

Cargotec is supplying two MacGregor offshore deck cranes for installation on an offshore converter platform, BorWin beta, which will feed 800MW of renewable energy generated by two offshore windfarms into the German electricity grid. The power converter will begin test operation at the end of 2012. The MacGregor luffing cranes have an SWL of 10 tonne at 41m outreach and will be used to offload supply vessels, handle materials on BorWin beta's open deck areas and lower them to the decks below via hatches. They are also 'man-riding approved'.

StatoilHydro’s Floating Wind Turbine

The world’s first full-scale floating wind turbine – StatoilHydro’s Hywind pilot – was officially inaugurated in the North Sea, 8 September. StatoilHydro is investing about $57.4m in the project, with Enova providing $9.9m. The latter is a state-owned company which promotes environment-friendly changes to energy production and use in Norway. Hywind comprises a 2.3-megawatt wind turbine installed on a traditional floater of the kind previously used for such applications as production platforms and offshore loading.
