Famous Crab Fishing Boat Gets a New Crane

Captain Sig Hansen has been fishing crabs in Alaska aboard the F/V Northwestern for more than 30 years. In 2005, Discovery Channel aired the documentary TV show “Deadliest Catch”, which portrays real life aboard fishing vessels in the Bering Sea. Coast Guard Foundation Chosen Charity on Celebrity Apprentice

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that this season, Sig Hansen, captain of the F/V Northwestern and star of Discovery’s Deadliest Catch, has selected the Foundation to be his designated charity on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice. The next season of the show, which begins airing this January, includes sixteen celebrity contestants who try to raise money and awareness for their chosen charities. Every week, the celebrity contestants work in teams to compete in business-driven tasks to win challenges. The winner will deliver a $250,000 check to his or her designated charity.

USCG Foundation to Honor Fellowmen in Alaska

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that it will honor the men and women who serve in Alaska at its biennial Alaska Awards Dinner at The Hotel Captain Cook in Anchorage on Wednesday August 13th. Geraldo Rivera, world-class sailor and Fox News senior correspondent, and Sig Hansen, captain of the F/V Northwestern and star of the Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," will join the Coast Guard Foundation to pay tribute to those who serve in this region – an area known for challenging weather and sea conditions. Nation's Commercial Fisherman Unite to Protect Bristol Bay, Alaska

The Commercial Fisherman for Bristiol Bay organization has announced that 77 commercial fishing groups from Alaska to Maine have sent a letter to the Obama Administration urging it to protect Bristol Bay, its epic salmon runs and the commercial fishing jobs that rely on them. The groups include the Maine Lobstermen's Association, Gloucester Fishermen's Wives, Maryland Watermen's Association and Southern Shrimp Alliance. In all, they represent more than 16,000 commercial fishermen across the country.

Edgar Hansen of the fishing vessel Northwestern—as featured on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," is coming to St. Michaels, MD and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum on Sunday, August 14 for the 2nd annual Watermen’s Appreciation Day. Hansen agreed to attend the event after learning of some of the parallels both Alaskan fisherman and the Chesapeake’s watermen are facing. “I was floored when Edgar personally returned my phone call,” said Talbot County Watermen’s Association’s event coordinator, Lisa Gowe.
