SMM Hamburg Ready for a New Beginning
At the SMM Ship Finance Forum just ahead of SMM, the leading international maritime trade fair hamburg, experts will discuss the potential and prospects for new ship financing models. In spite of low newbuilding prices, the total number of ship orders is declining around the world. Financing difficulties are part of the problem, and new concepts are in demand to revitalise the market. "In ship finance we have to address two separate issues: On the one hand, we need to put the fleet in service on a more solid financial basis. After a five-year double crisis – one affecting the financial, the other the shipping markets – that may be a tall order. On the other hand we need to finance new tonnage to be commissioned over the next few years.
Shipping Crisis Pains – Mingle at SMM 2012 Suggested
To manage the crisis successfully SMM organizers advise providers to keep close to their customers as record bookings received. The European debt crisis; a weak US employment market; declining growth rates in emerging economies such as China and India: prospects for the global economy are not exactly bright at the moment. These are the challenging coordinates for the decision-makers of the maritime industry as they get ready to gather for the 25th SMM, shipbuilding, machinery & marine technology international trade fair Hamburg. “Under these challenging economic conditions it is especially important for companies to remain in close contact with their customers,” says Peter Bergleiter, Business Unit Director at Hamburg Messe und Congress GmbH (HMC), the host of SMM.

New Ferries for Istanbul
The EIB is lending Istanbul’s Ferry boat company (IDO) $60.84m to finance the purchase of two fast ferryboats – part of a comprehensive program, which aims to improve the cities hamstrung transport infrastructure. Both ferryboats are designed to carry some 1200 passengers and over 200 cars and will offer passengers maximum level of comfort and safety. Istanbul is Turkey’s largest city and center of one of the country’s leading industrial and economic regions. The two bridges crossing the Bosphorus have proven insufficient to move hundreds of thousands of daily commuters in a city of 12 million people. Using the ferry to cross the straits is an alternative way to avoid the clogged roads.
