PPG's AMERCOAT Wins Navy Coating Award
PPG Industries’ protective and marine coatings (PMC) business inform they have received The Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) 2014 Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence for the performance of AMERCOAT® 240 and PSX® 700SG coatings on the 'USS Freedom', the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s littoral combat fleet. The award is given annually by SSPC to recognize exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities. Commissioned in 2008, the USS Freedom went to dry dock last year after its existing coating system failed.
Enclosed Dry Dock Opened on U.S. West Coast
Bay Ship & Yacht Co., an American service, refit and new construction yards for superyachts and commercial vessels, recently expanded its capacity and capabilities by unveiling a new covered dry dock that accommodates vessels displacing up to 6,300-long tons with a maximum beam of 76 feet. Currently the only dry dock on the West Coast to be fully enclosed by a retractable roof, this new high-tech facility on San Francisco Bay is a conversion of the submersible Hughes Mining Barge (HMB-1), which played a role in a covert Cold War operation. Corrosion Battle Conference at NATO School
Officials from NACE International & ministries of defense convene to compare best practices in combatting material degradation. The U.S. and its allies are serious about battling corrosion on aging aircraft, ships, submarines, and ground vehicles. Officials from the US DoD Corrosion Policy and Oversight Office and the German, French, and U.K. ministries of defense recently compared best practices in combatting material degradation on weapon systems and facilities during a four-day workshop at the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany. PPG PMC Business earns SSPC Military Award

Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. The award is given annually by SSPC to recognize exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities. PPG earned recognition for the performance of PSX(R) ONE coating, a one-component acrylic-siloxane coating, applied to the exterior of the historic USS Iowa battleship. PSX ONE coating provides high color and gloss retention in a durable, low-VOC (volatile organic compound), non-isocyanate formulation.

PPG Coatings Earns George Campbell Award
PPG Industries’ (NYSE: PPG) protective and marine coatings (PMC) business has been selected as a recipient of The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) George Campbell Award for 2009-2010. PPG PMC earned the recognition for the performance of its Amerlock 2/400 coating at the Deer Island Water Treatment Facility in Boston Harbor. The product, a fast-setting, high-solid epoxy coating, was applied to a gravity thickener at the plant, which is the second largest water treatment facility in the United States. The George Campbell Award is given for outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial commercial coatings project.
SSPC Publishes Visuals for Waterjetting, Blast Cleaning
SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings has published two new collections of surface preparation reference photographs: SSPC-VIS 4 and SSPC-VIS 5. SSPC-VIS 4 illustrates the appearances of steel surfaces prepared by waterjetting while SSPC-VIS 5 shows steel surfaces prepared by wet abrasive blast cleaning. Both contain a written guide and explanatory notes, as well as additional photographs that depict degrees of flash rust after cleaning. SSPC-VIS 4 and SSPC-VIS 5 were developed in collaboration with NACE International under the direction of the SSPC/NACE Joint Task Group on Wet Blast Visual Standards.
