The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has seen a marked increase in the use of its eCMID inspection scheme for offshore vessels that benefit from an independent International Safety Management health check. Over 2,300 vessels from more than 1,000 owners and operators are now listed on the eCMID database, which is consulted by more than 3,800 users each year. Inspections are undertaken by almost 400 Accredited Vessel Inspectors (AVIs) – and this number is rapidly expanding.

Arab Shipping Firm Orders 2,000 New Reefer Containers

Container shipping line United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has ordered 2,000 reefer containers from Daikin. As part of the emerging global carrier’s investment in the cutting-edge, energy-efficient solutions for the carriage of frozen and chilled cargoes, the order marks the first milestone in the expansion of UASC’s reefer services, says a statement from the company. The containers will be fitted with Daikin’s latest LXE 10E model reefer unit - the “H” model. While providing the optimum temperature environment and airflow for chilled cargo, hard- and software developments have significantly reduced power consumption, achieving a 50 per cent reduction in comparison to the earliest model, introduced in 2001.

New Options for Aerodynamic Analysis of Offshore Structures

Air flow around crane truss

Naval architecture and engineering firm Alan C. McClure Associates (ACMA) has recently completed a wind flow analysis on an offshore structure using its Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software package. Until recently, no alternatives existed to determine the effect of aerodynamics and its associated forces on offshore structures other than wind tunnel tests, ACMA said. And, while wind tunnels answer part of the question, they are limited in the level of detail they provide.
