Seatrium Secures World-First CCS Retrofit

Seatrium has secured the world’s first full-scale, turnkey carbon capture and storage (CCS) retrofit from Solvang ASA, Norway.The retrofit of a 7MW Wärtsilä CCS system will be carried out on Solvang’s 21,289 cubic meter ethylene carrier, Clipper Eris, and is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of this year. Group Set Up to Study Onboard Carbon Capture Technologies for Shipping Industry

Ship classification organization ABS said Tuesday it had joined an elite working group comprised of global maritime leaders to study onboard carbon capture technologies.The collaborative project brings together ABS, Diana Shipping Services S.A., Equinor ASA, GasLog LNG Services Ltd., Maran Gas Maritime Inc., Minerva Gas Inc., Neptune Lines Shipping and Managing Enterprises S.A., Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA), Prime Tanker Management Inc., Solvang ASA, Springfield Shipping Co.

Solvang Ethylene Carrier to Be Retrofitted with CCS System

Norwegian shipping company Solvang will pilot a retrofitted carbon capture and storage (CCS) system on one of its ethylene carriers in an effort to test the technology as a potential solution to support decarbonization in the shipping industry.Wärtsilä Exhaust Treatment said it is designing the retrofitted unit while it also completes a land-based 1MW test system at its Moss headquarters in Norway. "Green" Ammonia's Future as a Marine Fuel

Ammonia, the same pungent solution used in fertilizers and cleaning agents, may one day be the key to transporting renewable energy around the world. There are currently a number of government and corporate projects assessing the feasibility of converting excess renewable energy from sources like wind, solar, tidal and nuclear into ammonia and then back into usable energy.In its purist form, ammonia or NH3 is composed of one nitrogen and three hydrogen atoms making it an ideal candidate to chemically bind excess renewable energy. Like several other chemical compounds, ammonia can be transported by chemical tanker in liquid form to end-users. Based on its near ambient liquification point, it may be more appealing to transport ammonia over longer distances than hydrogen.

TMC to Provide Smart Air Compressors to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard

TMC Compressors of the Seas (TMC) has signed a contract to supply an environmentally friendly Smart Air marine compressed air system to the world’s first HFO-fuelled (heavy fuel oil) TIR III compliant ethylene carriers.TMC will provide the Smart Air compressors to Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which is responsible for building the two new 21,000 cbm ethylene carriers to Norwegian LPG and petrochemical shipping company Solvang ASA (Solvang).In a separate contract, TMC will provide 2 x N2 (nitrogen) feed air compressors to each of the two vessels’ on-board N2 system. The 10,000th Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for Kongsberg Maritime’s AutoChief propulsion control system took place at Kongsberg Maritime Korea in Busan on Friday, April 27. The AutoChief 600 system tested will be installed on a new LEG carrier featuring a 2-stroke MAN B&W engine being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (Hull 8258), for owner Solvang ASA. Optimarin BWT Retrofit Orders Grow

Optimarin has signed contracts with Wisby Tankers and Hoëgh Autoliners to install its market proven Optimarin Ballast System (OBS) on five existing vessels. The agreement, which comes six months after the Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist became the first company to win USCG approval, will see Optimarin fitting units on three bitumen tankers for Wisby and two Hoëgh Autoliners RoRo ships. Grand Bahama Shipyard Stayed Busy in 2016

The Caribbean shipyard Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL) worked on 49 commercial vessels and 20 cruise ships throughout 2016, with scope of works ranging from major steel fabrication and repairs, to engine and technical systems overhauls, hull treatment and tank cleanings. And looking to 2017 and beyond, the yard reports it has a healthy order book, with docking periods secured as far ahead as three years. VShips USA brought two bulk carriers, CSL Acadian and CSL Argosy, to GBSL to do tank cleaning on both vessels. CSL Acadian also received extensive pipe work.

Optimarin Grows US BWTS Order Book

Norwegian ballast water treatment (BWT) specialist Optimarin said it has secured a two-system contract with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding (FBS) in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. The agreement, which Optimarin said comes ahead of its imminent USCG approval, will see two 500 m³/h capacity Optimarin Ballast Systems (OBS) fitted on a single clean products barge. “The ability to trade in U.S. waters is key to global shipowners who want flexibility for their fleets,” comments Optimarin CEO Tore Andersen.

Yard Improvements at Grand Bahama Shipyard

Grand Bahama Shipyard Limited (GBSL), a shipyard in the Caribbean, said it had a productive summer program consisting of work on vessels from the tanker, container and towage segments of the maritime industry. Additionally, renovations and upgrades were performed on the floating dry docks and workshops, all in conjunction with yard improvements in anticipation for a busy fall and winter work period. The summer saw the yard busy with repeat customers from respected players in the tanker, container and towage segments operating in the Caribbean region.

Optimarin BWTS Completes USCG Testing

Ballast water treatment (BWT) system specialist Optimarin said it has completed the U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) environmental test and all land-based and shipboard testing for marine, brackish and fresh water. It is understood to be the first supplier of UV-based BWT technology to satisfy the USCG’s CMFDA testing criteria. Optimarin has specialized in environmentally friendly UV treatment technology for the past 22 years, installing the world’s first ever commercial system in 2000 on the cruise ship Princess Regal.

Hamworthy Krystallon, HHI Contract for Scrubber System

Solvang ASA, through Hyundai Heavy Industries, orders system for 84,000 cbm LPG carrier as three-year countdown to 2015 ECA approaches. Hamworthy Krystallon, the leading marine scrubbing technology manufacturer, today signed a significant contract with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), the world's biggest shipyard. The contract will see Hamworthy Krystallon deliver a scrubber system on a Liquified Petroleum Gas tanker being constructed for Solvang ASA. The 84.000 cubic meter (cbm) VLGC will have the worldĘĽs first full vessel scrubber system. The newbuild vessel will be fitted with two scrubbers; one for the main engine and one combined scrubber for three auxiliary engines. The scrubbers and washwater treatment will be situated in the funnel, in a modular design.

A&P Tyneside Secure Tanker Contracts

A&P Tyne has been very successful recently in securing general repair work on a number of Tankers, these include the 16,137 dwt Clipper Skagen (for Solvang ASA, Norway) and 3,261 dwt Lanrick (for George Gibson, Edinburgh) both of which are currently under repair and the 4,630 dwt Cervantes (for Gasnaval, Spain) is expected shortly. The ship yard also has a number of other Tankers stemmed which are all scheduled to dry dock in the near future. The Clipper Skagen arrived for a scheduled dry docking and upgrading and remained at the yard for 14 days, during which she underwent hull shrouded-grit blast preparation and painting work, including the removal and re-application of coatings all in accordance with the latest environmental regulations.

Fourth LEG/LPG Tanker Started

Magne Morken, Managing Director of the Norwegian shipping company Solvang ASA, pushed the button of the computer-controlled plasma torch for the steel construction of the fourth gas tanker out of a series of four. Cutting of the first steel plate marks the start of the production process of the new gas tanker. The LEG/LPG tankers will have a length overall of 154.9 m, a breadth of 22.70 m and a cargo capacity of 17,000 m3. They will be able to operate at a speed of 17 knots. In addition to ethylene, the tankers will also be able to carry vinyl chloride monomer, ammonia and propylene oxide, cooled down to minus 48° C. Deliveries of these special vessels, yard numbers S. 653, S. 654, S. 681 and S. 682, are scheduled for the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2007 and the 3rd and 4th quarter of 2008.
