Britain's Princess Anne to Open £420M Aberdeen Port Expansion Project

Britain's Princess Anne will on Friday officially open Port of Aberdeenā€™s £420 million South Harbor expansion project on Friday. The project is expected to catalyze a multi-billion-pound economic and job boost for Scotland.According to a press release issued by the port, independent analysis forecast that when the expanded Port of Aberdeen reaches its full potential the portā€™s Gross Value Added contribution will jump 60% to £2.4 billion and increase the number of jobs supported by 45% to 17ā€¦

Worker Dies Aboard Vessel at Aberdeen's South Harbor

A worker has died as a result of injuries suffered on board a vessel docked at Aberdeen's south harbor.The Port of Aberdeen and local authorities said the worker died on scene following an onboard incident at Dunnottar Quay on Saturday."Around 3:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2023, police were called to Dunnottar Quay, Aberdeen South Harbor, in Aberdeen after a report that a man had been seriously injured whilst working on a ship docked at the site," a Police Scotland spokesperson said. "Emergency services attended but the man died at the scene.

First Vessel Plugs In at Terminal 5 in Seattle

The Northwest Seaport Allianceā€™s Terminal 5 has welcomed MSC Brunella as the first vessel to plug in to the terminalā€™s new shore power infrastructure.Terminal 5 is the first international container terminal in the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) gateway with shore power capability, and the nearly 9,000 TEU vessel successfully used clean energy from the City of Seattleā€™s electrical grid while at berth on April 10.Shore power installation is a key part of the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategyā€¦

Port of Manila Cargo Flow Improves

The Port of Manila decongested its yard space by removing some overstaying containers said a port representative.The collaborative synergy between Asian Terminals Inc. Concrete 'Foundation' Reaches Aberdeen

As the first 6,000 tonne concrete ā€œfoundationā€ for Aberdeen Harborā€™s $466m expansion has arrived from Cromarty Firth, the harbor expansion project has reached a new landmark stage.The 50m long, 15m wide and 16m deep caisson is the first of 22 that will form the foundations for Castlegate and Dunnottar Quays, which will be 540m and 400m long respectively. In order to transport the caisson safely, it will travel the 180-nautical mile journey at two nautical miles per hour, escorted by ā€˜The Strathdeeā€™ towage vessel.Once the caisson has safely arrived in South Harbor, GPS equipment will be used to position it into its designated location with an accuracy of +/- 20mm. It will then be filled with water to sink it to the sea bed.

Manila Ports Utilization Remains Healthy

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) informed that the cargo volume in the country has registered a modest hike in the first seven months of the year despite the sluggish performances from almost all aspects of local and foreign trade.Latest data from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) showed that Philippine cargo traffic totaled 147.271 million metric tons (MMT) in the January to July 2018 period or a 2% hike compared to the 144.412 MMT handled in the same period last year.The data also showed that foreign cargo throughput handled is at 87.639 MMT or some 1.64% higher than the figure posted a year earlier wherein import volume handled is at 53.654 MMT and export traffic at 33.985 MMT.

UK Ports to Invest $2.36 Bln in Infrastructure

Newly published research shows that U.K. ports and terminals have an estimated £1.7 billion ($2.36 billion) of port infrastructure investment in the development pipeline. The research is part of the British Ports Associationā€™s ā€˜Port Futuresā€™ program and was undertaken by infrastructure advisory firm Moffatt & Nichol. It captures significant schemes all over the U.K. and highlights how ports in all parts of the U.K. are investing in new facilities to foster growth in the U.K. market. ā€œPorts are doing their bit but we rely on government to ensure that road and rail connections from the port gate are fit for purpose. The terrestrial and marine planning and consenting process is also cumbersome and costly and often holds back or even prevents some sustainable port development.

Handforth is New CEO of Aberdeen Harbor Board

Michelle Handforth has taken over the role of chief executive at Aberdeen Harbor Board, the U.K. offshore oil and gas port. This comes after an extensive recruitment process, when Handforth, who has 20 years of board and leadership experience in global, multi-site businesses, was recruited to succeed Colin Parker as Chief Executive. Alistair Mackenzie, Chairman of Aberdeen Harbor Board, said, ā€œMichelle is joining Aberdeen Harbor at an incredibly important time for the organisation. Construction works are well under way at the Aberdeen South Harbor site, whilst we continue to focus on providing second-to-none services and facilities for our customers in the existing harbor.

Tacoma Preparing for Its Largest Ever Auto Import

A roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessel carrying a shipment of more than 4,800 vehicles from South Korea is scheduled to arrive January 9 at Tacomaā€™s Terminal 7, marking the single-largest auto discharge in Port of Tacoma history. At 656 feet long and 106 feet wide, the ship Glovis Composer has a total capacity to transport 6,400 vehicles. During this call, the South Harbor will receive six high and heavy cargoes in addition to 4,818 vehicles to be transported throughout the country as far east as Ohio, according to the Northwest Seaport Alliance.

Northwest Seaport Alliance Plans $141 Mln Terminal Upgrade

The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, announced that its managing members have approved $141 million worth of construction and cranes to dock two of the largest containerships simultaneously at Husky Terminal in the South Harbor. The actions also included a 20-year lease extension, allowing Husky Terminal and Stevedoring to operate the terminal until 2046. ā€œThis is a real historic moment for the alliance,ā€ Port of Seattle Commission President John Creighton said during the meeting.

CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin Calls Seattle

Largest cargo vessel to visit U.S. The largest cargo ship to visit the United States, the CMA CMG Benjamin Franklin, arrived Monday at The Northwest Seaport Allianceā€™s Terminal 18 in Seattle. The Benjamin Franklin has capacity for 18,000 20-foot equivalent container units (TEUs), more than double the cargo of most container ships calling at Northwest Seaport Alliance terminals. If laid end-to-end, the 18,000 TEUs would stretch from Tacoma to Everett, a distance of about 68 miles.

INS Sahyadri in Philippines for Goodwill Visit

The INS Sahyadri, a Shivalik-class stealth frigate, of Indian Navy arrived in Manila on Sunday for a four-day goodwill visit to the country. It is docked at the South Harbor. The warship is likely to remain in Manila till November 4 for extensive interaction with the Philippines Navy before it continues into the North West Pacific region as part of India's Act East policy. The visit of INS Sahyadri, an indigenously built warship of the Shivalik class, is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing inter-operability between navies of India and the Philippines, said a government statement. Commanded by Captain Kunal Singh Rajkumar, the warship will also conduct interoperability exercises and search and rescue procedures with the Philippines Navy.

Manila Ports Back at Optimum Utilization

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) stated that utilization rate at the port of Manila is back to normal after the disruption of operations during the visit of Pope Francis to the country last month. The state-run PPA said in a statement that container yard utilization and vessel waiting time were normalizing as early as the second week of January and continues to improve. PPA general manager Juan Sta. Ana reported that utilization at the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) of International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) and the Manila South Harbor of Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI) continues to improve to normal levels.

Batangas Port Sets Container Record

Batangas Container Terminal (BCT) set a new record in 2014 for containers handled, says its operator Asian Terminals, Inc. (ATI). Port handled over 98,000 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) in 2014, its highest total ever. The port operator added that BCT ended 2014 with consolidated throughput of 1.02 million TEUs, up 8.6%. BCT has continuously expanded its role as a comprehensive gateway for Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon), providing shippers direct connectivity to Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia and other global hubs through vessels regularly calling the port weekly. 'Business as Usual' for Manila Port During Papal Visit

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) says that the country's major seaports, except the Manila South Harbor, will remain open during Pope Francis' visit to the country from January 15 to 19. PPA general manager Juan Sta. Ana said it is ā€œbusiness as usualā€ for the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT), North Port, Harbour Centre Port Terminals Inc., and the Tacloban baseport. The clarifications come after reports in the local media that the Manila Port will be closed prompting PPA to suspend operations. However, PPA said in a statement it had advised stakeholders to take additional measures to reduce the commercial impact of the slowdown in operations to give way to the security measures being put in place for the Popeā€™s safety.

Manila Port Congestion Could Increase in Short Term

Expecting worse congestion at the Ports of Manila to worsen with the arrival of Pope Francis on January 15, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) has urged shippers to clear out their cargo from the port by the weekend. The Philippine Ports Authority says that the next seven days will be crucial in governmentā€™s efforts to decongest the ports in Manila, ahead of Pope Francisā€™ visit as it will further disrupt cargo movements in and out of the congested port. The government has urged shippers to clear out their cargo from the port by the weekend. PPA said in a statement if yard utilization at the two Manila ports remained at current level during the next seven days, it could easily bring back the ports to congestion level after the five-day papal visit on Jan.

Evergreen Expands its CPH Service Network

In order to offer a more comprehensive service to shippers and importers in the Philippines, Evergreen Line will team up with Cheng Lie Navigation(CNC) to launch the new China-Philippines Service (CPH). Two ships around 1,000 TEU will be deployed on the new weekly service, each operated by the joint service partners. Shanghai - Ningbo - Xiamen - Shekou - Manila (South harbor) -Shanghai. Port of Tallinn invests in Paldiski South Harbor

The council of Port of Tallinn approved an investment of 1.8 million euros for deepening the aquatory of Paldiski South Harbor in order to enable the harbour to accept bigger vessels with total tonnage up to 75,000 GT. With the help of the investment aimed to increase the competitiveness of Paldiski South Harbor the channel and turning circle of the aquatory will be deepened from current 13.5 meters to 14.5 meters. ā€œPaldiski South Harbor today is a regional cargo harbour oriented towards handling both, the Estonian export and import cargo and specific transit goods,ā€œ said Remo Holsmer, the Chairman of the Council of Port of Tallinn. The core activity of Paldiski South Harbor is focused today on the handling of ro-ro cargo, scrap metal, timber, peat and oil products.

A Summer Of Sailing At Lerwick Harbor

Lerwick Harbor is set to cast off for a summer of sailing with a series of local and international events attracting several hundred crew, beginning this week with the arrival of entrants in the Round Britain & Ireland Yacht Race. Sandra Laurenson, Lerwick Port Authority Chief Executive, said: ā€The harbour will again be playing host to a number of sailing enthusiasts, many of them repeat visitors, meeting and competing in the established races and underlining the popularity of the port and Shetland with yachting crews. ā€¢ The Round Britain & Ireland Yacht Race, operated by the Royal Western Yacht Club and held every four years, with the 13 remaining entries en route clockwise around Britain and Ireland from a start in Plymouth on 1 June.

11 Yacht Race Sailors Rescued off Philippines

The Philippine Coast Guard said that the sailors were on board the yacht "Tipsy Frenz"  competing in a sailing race from Hong Kong to Taiwan when it sank A passing Hong Kong cargo ship "Easy Success" which was on its way to the Philippines, rescued the survivors. The PCG said that its vessel BRP Nueva Vizcaya will meet the cargo vessel at the entrance of South Harbor in Manila and will bring the sailors  to its headquarters. It is not known whether any of the rescued persons was injured, nor what caused the yacht to sink

China-Philippines-Thailand (CPT) Express Service

Evergreen Line and China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) will launch a new joint service, the China-Philippines-Thailand (CPT) Express Service effective mid-March. The new CPT service, which is expected to commence from Shanghai, will operate with three 2,500 TEU vessels. Evergreen will deploy one vessel and two vessels will come from CSCL. China Shipping will use its CSCL Manzanillo V.0021S to launch its first sailing and Evergreen Line will deploy Ital Onore, which will depart from Shanghai on March 26. The port rotation is as follows: Shanghai-Ningbo-Manila North Harbor-Manila South Harbor-Laem Chabang-Hong Kong-Shanghai.
