Offshore supply vessels (OSVs) have large open decks to carry cargo to offshore rigs. Mississippi River Ship Channel Deepening Project Moves Forward

WWII Museum’s PT-305 Sails Again
Commercial workboat philanthropy on display on PT-305: WWII Museum’s PT-305 sails again after a far reaching donor-funded restoration. In March, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans launched its reconstructed PT-305, built locally by Higgins Industries in 1943. The museum acquired the boat known as the USS Sudden Jerk in 2007, restoration began in 2009, and it now sails Lake Pontchartrain as an interactive exhibit. PT-305, with a fifteen-man crew, belonged to a 12-ship squadron operating in the Mediterranean from 1944 until the war ended in 1945.

Repeat NYC Ferry Business for Metal Shark
Metal Shark Building Four 350-Passenger Vessels and an Additional 150-Passenger Vessel for NYC Ferry. Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark is once again building multiple high-speed aluminum catamaran passenger vessels for the NYC Ferry Service Operated by Hornblower. In early August, Metal Shark received orders from Hornblower for four 97’ x 28’, 350-passenger USCG Subchapter K vessels, which are a new and larger platform than the fleet of 150-passenger vessels NYC Ferry currently operates. An additional 85’, 150-passenger USCG Subchapter T vessel has also been ordered.

Conrad Shipyard Founder Parker Conrad Passed Away
John Parker Conrad, Sr., founder of Conrad Shipyard, died peacefully on July 6 surrounded by family and friends at his home in Morgan City, La. He was 101 years old. A shipbuilding pioneer and a legend along the Gulf of Mexico coast and beyond, Parker founded Conrad Industries in 1948. Conrad now has five shipyards along the Louisiana-Texas coast. From age 12 to age 17, Parker trained as a Christian Brother, which formed in him a deeply rooted and lifelong commitment to others.

US Imports Rare Bolivian Condensate Cargo
The United States imported a 272,000-barrel cargo of Bolivian condensate bought by trading firm Trafigura last week after more favorable crude spreads prompted larger purchases of foreign oil last month, according to traders and ThomsonReuters data. Refining and trading companies in the United States turned to crude and condensate imports in February to find cheap oil after the arbitrage opened as a result of an inversion in the spread between benchmark U.S. crude oil prices and Brent. Purchases of African crudes increased to 11.66 million barrels in February, the highest volume since October including Nigerian condensate, according to the same data. Most crudes arriving were light and sweet, competing with U.S. grades.

A custom built 75-foot multipurpose port security vessel built by Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has been delivered for the Port of South Louisiana. Based on Metal Shark’s Endurance-class catamaran design, the welded aluminum vessel is designed to support fire rescue missions, Command and Control (C2) operations and around-the-clock port security efforts. Twin Cat C-18 diesel engines in a conventional straight-shaft inboard configuration propel the 75 Endurance’s catamaran hull to cruising speeds of 25 knots while yielding a nominal operating range of over 500 miles.
Konecranes Replaces 24 Hoists for Cenex Harvest State
Konecranes South Louisiana operations group completed a simultaneous replacement of 24 hoists in a tightly scheduled two-week service outage at the CHS Myrtle Grove Terminal outside New Orleans. Its South Louisiana operations group recently replaced 24 8-ton hoists mounted on two overhead cranes used to lift and replace top covers on barges delivering grain. These two cranes unload over six million metric tonnes of grain each year, which is then loaded onto export vessels for shipment all over the world.

Chouest Appointed to Port of New Orleans Board

The OPC Sweepstakes: Three for the Money
In February, the U.S. Coast Guard chose three finalists to design its new Offshore Patrol Cutters, with awards to Bollinger Shipyards in Lockport, La., Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Fla. and General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works in Maine. Each company was awarded a Phase I design contract valued at between $21 million and $22 million. At the end of the 18-month Preliminary and Contract Design Phase I, the Coast Guard will choose one company’s team for a Phase II Detailed Design and Construction contract for the lead OPC.
