UK Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier Heads to Rosyth for Repairs

The U.K. Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales has left Portsmouth en route to Rosyth where the £3 billion aircraft carrier will receive repairs after breaking down off the Isle of Wight in August.The 65,000-tonne warship will enter Babcock's dry dock in Rosyth where it will undergo repairs to its starboard propeller shaft which suffered a mechanical defect as the ship left for New York. NIMASA Employs 20 Outstanding Seafarer Cadets

Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Dakuku Peterside announced the decision of the Executive Management of the Agency to offer automatic employment to twenty (20) beneficiaries of the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) Cadets that passed out with distinctions in their various fields of study. IBIA Develops Bunker Course with South Shields Marine School

The International Bunker Industry Association, (IBIA) has joined with South Shields Marine School at South Tyneside College, to develop a course unit on bunkering essentials for merchant navy cadets and engineering officers taking their Class one and Class two certificates of competency. The course has been developed in close partnership with the college, and explains the fundamentals of the bunker industry, the key regulations affecting shipping today, the challenges and industry developments, all of which will be increasingly important issues for the cadets and engineers once they commence their careers afloat. Kongsberg to Supply UK Nautical College Simulators

Kongsberg Maritime has been chosen to supply a suite of upgraded navigation, engine room and Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) simulator hardware and software for an extensive facilities upgrade to the School of Simulation & Senior Marine at South Tyneside College. The upgrade project is being carried out during the summer and will include installation of the simulation systems and improvements to the buildings that house them. Seagull's IMSBC Code Training Module

Seagull AS, provider of computer based training (CBT) for seafarers, has introduced a new module that incorporates the regulatory changes made through the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code that became mandatory under the SOLAS Convention from January 1st, 2011. The new Code, which covers the loading, discharge and transportation by sea of dry bulk cargoes, replaces the Code of Safe Practice for Solid Bulk Cargoes (The BC Code), and has to be followed by all bulk carriers. Working closely with experts from South Tyneside College, Seagull has completely revised its previously BC Code-compliant training module in order to implement the necessary changes and bring it in line with the new IMSBC Code.

U.K. First to Provide VTS Supervisor Training

On October 18, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) accredited south Tyneside College (STC) for the training of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Operators. The college achieved a world’s first less than two years previous to this, by receiving accreditation for the provision of basic training for VTS Operators. The Supervisors’ course, V-103/2, is based on the model course recommended by IALA. It provides the necessary development and assessment of knowledge and competence required to direct overall VTS operations.
