Port agency and marine services provider Inchcape Shipping Services announced it has appointed Anna Evangelidis as its new Chief Operating Officer, effective June 6, 2023.Evangelidis brings with her a wealth of experience, having previously worked at BP, Saipem and LR (Lloyds Register), where she held various positions as a naval architect, pipeline engineer, procurement, and other operational leadership roles. Evangelidis secured an honors degree in Ship Science from Southampton University. In her new role, Evangelidis will be responsible for three major areas of our company.

Catriona Savage, BMT’s Technical Assurance and Capability Director, has been names President of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA). She is the organization's first woman President.Savage, who is Honorary Professor at University College London Mechanical Engineering Department, takes over the RINA Presidency from Maurizio d’Amico who has served the institution over the last two years.Commenting on her presidency and vision for the future, Savage said, "I have been a member of RINA for over 25 years since I joined as a student at Southampton University.

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced the appointment of Paul Butcher as Managing Director, LR Management Systems & Inspection Services. Based in Birmingham, U.K., Butcher brings with him over 30 years of leadership experience in global professional services businesses. After graduating from Southampton University, Butcher held a number of leadership roles in the assurance, IT services and telecommunications sectors, including positions with SAI Global, Marconi, Ericsson and Damovo. With full responsibility for the leadership and development of Lloyd’s Register’s Management Systems and Inspection Services international business, Butcher will play a key role in building on the organization’s outstanding reputation for service and delivery to clients.

The fatal explosion in the pump room on the Brazilian FPSO Cidade de São Mateus in February 2015, demonstrated the potential for major accidents on this type of unit. Although there has never been an explosion in the oil storage tanks of an FPSO, there is a potential for such an event and offshore operators should assess the risks of such events to design against them. It is therefore imperative that risk assessments of FPSOs address this type of event. For this, they need to estimate its annual likelihood of occurring.

A team of engineers from the University of Southampton launched a 3D printed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from the bow of a Royal Navy warship in a bid to demonstrate the potential use of lightweight drones at sea. After being launched from HMS Mersey off the Dorset coast in the south of England, the UAV was flown autonomously on a pre-programmed route for a few before landing on Chesil Beach. Known as the Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft (SULSA), the drone weighed 3kg with a wing-span of nearly 1.5 meters.

Oman Drydock Company (ODC) informs it has appointed one of Oman’s most experienced maritime professionals as deputy CEO to help support and grow its expanding operations. Taking up the role of deputy CEO, Dr. Ahmed Al Abri, draws on 17 years experience working as a naval architect overseeing major projects in shipyards around the world in the U.K., Holland, Romania and Singapore. “When I first went to study naval architecture at Southampton University in the U.K., there were no shipyards in Oman,” he said.

Europe’s commercial marine and workboat exhibition held in a working port, Seawork International, has released its plans for demonstrations, launches and conferences. Organizers say Voith will announce a new marine propulsion system that produces more thrust, reduces noise and vibration, while cutting operating costs. The Smart Surfaces’ Duplex fouling from Tudor Streamline Surfaces will debut at Seawork, which is expected to attract considerable interest from commercial boat operators having been initially developed by the U.S.

Prior to joining Imtech, Eric held the position of Vice President Americas at RightShip (a specialized company offering the commercial shipping industry a Ship Vetting Information System), building the company to be a world leader in its field, performing over 34,000 vets and over 3,000 ship inspections. Capt. Clarke also headed the Seafarer’s Documentation and Certification Dept.

The 2013 ICOMIA/IFBSO Congress was held in London, United Kingdom from June 11-14,  2013 and was hosted and organized by the British Marine Federation (BMF) at Devonport House, located in London’s exclusive Royal Greenwich, a World Heritage Site. The first two days of Congress consisted of various committee meetings including the first gathering of ICOMIA’s new committees: "Grow Boating," which examines current campaigns dedicated to growing recreational boating globally and the "Exporters Committee," which provides members a forum to share knowledge on export markets, discuss import regulations and exchange information on overseas boat/trade show experiences.

Xylem Analytics UK and Aanderaa Data Instruments have launched a new marine water quality monitor which has been designed to enable wider deployment of water quality sensors on ferries and other marine vessels. The ‘SOOGuard’ will be launched at Ocean Business 2013 in April and Xylem’s David Goldsmith says: “In order to encourage the operators of ferries to allow the installation of monitoring equipment on their vessels, it is vitally important that the instrumentation is easy to maintain and reliable.

Donjon Marine, Co., Inc., a provider of multi-faceted marine services including marine salvage, heavy lift, dredging, emergency response services and most recently shipbuilding and repair, has named John Noble as Managing Director - Donjon UK. Mr. Noble has worked in commercial shipping since 1962 when he joined HMS Conway, the preeminent pre-sea training school in the United Kingdom. He served as a deck officer in the British Merchant Marine sailing with shipping lines including Blue Funnel and Palm Line. After obtaining his Master Mariners certificate, Mr.

Seven directors were elected to the Board of the UK P&I Club at its AGM in Athens on the 27th October. After obtaining a postgraduate degree in industrial engineering, Ibrahim Güngen founded Güngen Foreign Trade Co Ltd with his brother Mehmet in 1976 and the business quickly became the biggest importer of molasses in Turkey. Mr Güngen has been chief executive officer of Güngen Maritime and Trading since 1990. Dr Grahaeme Henderson, aged 56, joined Shell following a PhD in Engineering from Southampton University in 1980.
